no disc burn

    no disc burn

I'm reposting this here as I believe that I put it in the wrong group before (sorry!)...

I am trying to create a DVD from my movie. When I select the disc tab, set the folder for aux files etc, the create button always reads 'create' file - that is, never 'create disc', irrespective of whether I choose to create a file first or do both (e.g. file and then burn). The 'making movie' process goes on but no burn to disc although it does appear at some point to open the drive. I have checked that I can read and write to the DVD burner and it is fine.

I don't know whether it is a connected issue but my menus never display in edit mode either. They appear on the video timeline but I cannot see them if entering the edit clip option. I am using Pinnacle 12 ultimate. My pc is dual core running MS vista, 2Gb ram with a separate (SATA) 300Gb hard drive which I have installed only for pinnacle files.

Having spent a month patching/sync-ing together 2 separate videos and 2 separate sound recordings of my sons rock band in concert, I am on the verge of throwing my pc out of the window! Any ideas?

    Welcome to the forum!

In S12, there is no direct to burn option anymore (existed in earlier versions). I am assuming that you are using "create disc content but don't burn." If that is the case, once thatis complete, go back to make movie and then click "burn from previously created disc content". Then the icon in make movie will switch to ":create disc".

    Re: no disc burn

Thanks. You are right in your guess. When I get the create disc button and press it, I get a dialogue asking me to specify the location of the image. When I select the file (which has a kind of (film icon), I get an invalid path message.

I know I'm a newbie but I do design software for a living and Pinnacle has been a crushing disappointment in terms of how flaky it is and how unhelpful it is when things don't go right. Although you guys do a great job helping out people like me, is there a competitor package that you would recommend, even if it is a bit more expensive?

When I select the file (which has a kind of (film icon),

Sounds like a Studio Grey "Film-Strip" Project Folder, Saved in your My Projects Folder & not in your My Disc Images Folder (S10). I've only recently installed S12 & haven't used it yet apart from checking that all of my purchased Premium Content has transferred from S10 & that the 3 3rd Party Ultimate Plugins work. I'll do an S12 test Project, to check the Location of the Project & Disk Image Folder..

is there a competitor package that you would recommend,

IMO, all Consumer Video Editing Progs (of which there are many to choose from), have their Pros & Cons & have limitations in various areas. Studio has always been sold on the ease of use of it's User Interface. There are others with easy to use Interfaces, but they are limited in the features they offer. The others that do have more features, have  confusing Interfaces, which take some-time to learn. DVD burning isn't Studio's core function (Editing is), whereas Nero's is (Video Editing isn't) & a lot of Posters use that (Create a Disk Image in Studio. Import that into Nero & Burn).

If you want an all-round Video Editing Prog  that gives you what you want & a bit more, featurewise, when you become more proficient, then IMO, you couldn't do better than Studio, for the price.

Some Posters have various Consumer Video Editing Progs, from which they choose the best features, but they presumably have the cash, to do so. Video Editing isn't easy. Stick with Studio & learn the Prog from cover to cover (User Manual) & start with simple Projects, progressing to more complicated, as you learn the Prog. There's a lot of good stuff re: Studio to be found at romskye.com

    Anyone-else?

Like Colour said, you are pointing to your project file or folder.

When you get the dialogue, "Select Image Folder", you are supposed to select a place that you want your video file to be written to. You can select any location to write this file to, but for simplicitys sake, just use the default location. Let me break it down to a step by step for you.

When you have your project ready to burn, click the "Make Movie Tab.
Go to the settings, and select "Create but don't burn". Click "OK". Now the "Create Disc" button will say "Create Image".
Click "Create Image", and a pop up window will appear. The default location for the files is Pinnacle Studio/My Disc Images.
Click "My Disc Images", and click "Make New Folder". Rename the folder to one of your liking.
Click "OK", and the image should start to render.

Now, your DVD video folder is written, and you need to burn it to disc. Go ahead and insert your DVD.

Go to the settings and select "Burn from previous". Make sure your burner is selected, change the burning speed to 8X, and click "OK".
Click the "Create Disc" button, and the pop up window will appear. Look in the disc images folder for your named folder and click on it.
When you click "OK", the burn should start.

There are many other settings that you can check and/or change, but this should get you started.

Colour, hope you don't mind me taking your thoughts and running with them, I needed something to do whilst eating my ice cream. Wink

    Re: no disc burn

Thanks Mike for taking the time & trouble to Post the aboveSmile.

    To the Original Poster:

I don't think Mike has S12. The Disk Settings layout has changed.

I'll do an S12 test Project, to check the Location of the Project & Disk Image Folder.

Test done, as below, for Burning to a DVD-RW Disk. S12 Project & Disk Image  show in My Projects & My Disk Images Folders, respectively, in My Documents / Pinnacle Studio.

It maybe that you have already opted for "Create Disk Content & then Burn to Disk", in Settings /  Burn Options. If not, do-so. / Then  Click "Create Disk" / DVD-RW Drive tray opens - insert DVD / Click "Create Disk" again & navigate to "my Disk Images" Folder, in Pop-Up. Click OK  / S12 will then continue to Burn to Disk.

Doing the above, gives you the advantage of creating a Disk Image & Burning to Disk, in one operation.
