DVD output quality dissapointing. What am I doing wrong?

Hi, I have been using studio products for a number of years.  Recently I upgraded to 11 ultimate.  My first DVD attempt has been dissapointing.  The problem is that the output appears to have fewer horizontal lines than I expected.  It looks like what I would expect if the quality is set to a low level, but, I have the quality set to the highest level.  The DVDs I'm making are useless to me.

I adjusted the setting to give the highest quality DVD I can get (60 mins on a single layer disk) but it doesn't look as good as what I'm used to with Studio 9.

I did select progressive scanning and re-encode, are those settings messing things up?  What am I doing wrong?

     Thanks,

What footage are you using? If the original footage is interlaced, then UNcheck "Progressive encoding"

I've been going back through these threads to try to learn more and to fix my problems.  Now I am more confused.

Should I select progressive scanning and re-encode or not.  This thread talks about interlaced video.  I'm not sure that I understand the exact term....and how I know if my video is interlaced.

I captured via firewire from a DV camera.  I edited each part of the show and saved each section as an AVI.  I put the AVI files together to burn my DVD.  At the present time I DO have progressive and reencode checked.    I'm not looking for HD right now because my current video card cannot handle it...but I would like a little better picture.  Now my video has some pixellation in it when burned to DVD.

I currently have Studio 12.  I started with 9, then moved to 11 and now 12.  I'm not a total idiot....just a partial idiot.  Please share your wisdom.

Apologies. DV Is interlaced. The newer TVs and web video ar e progressive. More details can be found here. However, in Studio, many people have concluded that checking the "progressive encoding" tab in make movie leads to blurrier still pictures, hence my suggestion to NOT check progressive encoding (the Studio help file is actually misleading). You do not need to have re-encode checked unless you are having encoding issues (meaning the computer stops rendering or hangs) So, try making your movie again with progressive encoding not checked.

And no, you are not an (partial) idiot.  It just means that I didn't explain myself well enoughEmbarrassed and the Studio help file does anything but in this case!
