    Idea [I] Studio 12 Pre-Installation Tips

Before installing Studio 12, be sure to do the following.

    1. If you didn't fall into the Windows Vista trap and are still lucky enough to be using XP, upgrade to SP3. It's quick and painless.
    2. Upgrade your video card's drivers. My ATI video card is 2x faster than the recommended minimum and I was unable to use Magic Bullet (Ultimate version) without getting an error message. I couldn't figure it out and was about to post a question to these forums but decided to give it a try and update the video drivers. Again, quick and painless and I can now use Magic Bullet.
    3. Upgrade your audio drivers. (Haven't done that but plan to very soon).

I've seen some complaints about Studio 12 and so far (knock on wood), I'm happy. I had no problems with the transition of my transitions, effects, etc and the installation was quick and (yes), painless.

Right now I'm just giving myself a tour of the new bells & whistles and so far, I like what I see. I had pre-ordered Ultimate 12 upgrade and was able to get a hard copy of the manual. Since I was never pleased with the on-line help guide, I believe I'll get better use with a hard copy guide and it will answer questions I had with Studio 11 Ultimate.

Am I being prematurely optimistic? Only time will tell.

    Good stuffSmile

Could I add that if you have St 10 or 11 installed and have premium features from those versions you want to transfer, but intend to uninstall the older versions, to do so before you install S12, regardless of what Pinnacle say. It may mean a little more disc swapping to re-install the S11/11 stuff, but will end in less hassle overall.

    Tami:

Before installing Studio 12, be sure to do the following.

    1. If you didn't fall into the Windows Vista trap and are still lucky enough to be using XP, upgrade to SP3. It's quick and painless.

There is a problem with this.  If you are upgrading from a previous version of studio (I had 11) which at the time you installed with SP2, you need to keep SP2 until after you upgrade and uninstall your old version.  My Studio 11 would not uninstall because I had SP3 which I installed a few months ago.

This forced me to uninstall SP3, uninstall Studio 11, and then re-install SP3.  Don't do it until the Studio upgrade is over!

    Hello:

For those installing Studio 11 on Windows XP with SP3, there is information on the Pinnacle Product Knowledge Base about this problem:

That could be an autorun issue only.

Browse the disc and run the executable launcher file in the root directory.

    Re: Studio 12 Pre-Installation Tips

I have XP and SP3...shuts my machine off EVERYTIME.  I'm dowloading the patch, takes an hour and like 40 minutes.  If that don't work...I'm taking it back.  Never to buy again.  There are too many programs for what I want to do out there to aggravate myself with software that don't work.  N

    Re: Studio 12 Pre-Installation Tips

I just recvd my Studio 12 Ultimate Upgrade and have a few questions regarding installation, which I have not attempted to do just yet.

I have an ancient version  (7) of Studio, which I have never installed on my computer.  It was still in the box, unopened until recently.  Should I install the old version first and then the upgrade version?  Or can I just install certain files for the upgrade to read?

Also, I am concerned about Studio 12  installation and SP3.  I was just about to delete  SP3 from my system, as Media Center crashes everytime I try to open it and I believe it is due to SP 3 from what I have read on one of the MS forums.

I am hoping this is not going to be a huge problem.  I am a bit technically challenged when it comes to some of this stuff...     right now, I am going back to the ATI site and see if I can figure out if I need an updated video driver....    which me luck...  haha

    Re: Studio 12 Pre-Installation Tips

I have just ordered Pinnacle 12 ultimate so that I can progress with Bluray.

Do I have to remove all Pinnacle from my computer or can I just use "reg delete"...I dont want to loose all the music and extra backgrounds etc. I have with version 11.1..also, will my disc with "Hollywood fx" still be usable with its origional key numbers?

    regards

    Re: Studio 12 Pre-Installation Tips

Ian - have you considered leaving St11 in place? Unless you have a shortage of space on your C: drive, I'd recommend it.

    • I've not seen any issues reported that have been caused by leaving Studio 11 in place
    • Using the "transfer wizzard" to make your additional content should be a more straightforward process
    • Having Studio 11 is helpful in some circumstances. For example, at the moment S12.1 is making a mess of importing some DVDs. Studio 11 is fine. So I just go back to 11 for that step.
    • You can finish or remake S11 projects at lesuire without the fear that S12 won't import them completely correctly (which it doesn't always do)

If you are just considering using reg delete you won't even get the advange of freeing up some space on your C: drive. If you uninstall everything, run regdelete, then install 12 you should be able to import any additional content you bought so long as it was from S10 onwards. My HFX Plus disc that came with S9 won't import directly, so in fact I've got S9, 11 and 12 running on my main partion.

I emphasise should because various people have had some pain over this. The worse thing to do seems to be to install S12 alongside older versions of Studio, and them decide to remove the older version. If you have bought an upgrade, you can install 12 after you have removed 11, as all you have to do is put the program disc  for 11 in during the 12 install as "proof of purchace".
