Upgrading from Studio 11 Ultimate to Studio Ultimate 12 Ripoff?

I recently bought Studio 11 Utimate and today i get an offer to upgrade to Version 12 -

Is there an upgrade path for people who have had this product for less then 2 months - I was using Ulead and fell for pinnacles pitch . Its an ok product but feel i am being ripped off by having to basically re purchase at full price

Can a decision maker at pinnacle please advise me - Hey if if I have to pay full upgrade for less then 2 months use - I am going back to Ulead

    Thanks

I don't think that Pinnacle have ever adopted this policy. ISTR that Sony have something like a 30 day policy on Vegas? It's all very well us being smug on the forum, because we have suspected the S12 has been due for over 4 months now, but if you paid full price for Studio 11, then you are understandably irked. Someone using a Pinnicle IP address even deleted the S12 rumour from Wikipedia Wink

Of course you don't have to upgrade yet (or ever) - S11 isn't going to stop working, and it will take quite a while before S12 is proven - by which time special offers will start to become available. The issue is if Pinnacle will perform any more fixes on S11 - so if you have problems with the software, don't expect them to be solved without paying for an upgrade.

But then again, that last bit goes for all of us....

If you know how to shop, you could have picked up Studio 11 Ultimate within the past couple of months for next to nothing.  The upgrade rebate shown in my link included a competitive upgrade rebate, so you could have used your Ulead product to qualify for it.  So I don't have too much sympathy for the ripoff remark. Indifferent

But welcome to the forum.  Smile

Well considering the false advertising on the box from Studio 11 Ultimate, I would say that the purchase of ANY Pinnacle product is a blatant RIP OFF.

I have only had Ultimate 11 for a few months and feel completely ripped off. I can't believe they are trying to entice me to upgrade for another $100.00. Give me a break! I can completely understand the original posters remarks.

Re: Upgrading from Studio 11 Ultimate to Studio Ultimate 12 Ripoff?

Yes. I feel it is as rip-off at any version. I started with 10 and it has never worked correctly. When I ask for tech assist they recommend upgrading to fix it! The people telling you it is not a rip-off have money to burn.

Who have I "stolen" this "quote" from? It's the sig I've been using on this forum for about two years. I think it's funny, but I'm not pretending I thought it up originally. Who did? I'll gladly give them credit. If you think I need to add "anon" as a suffix to prove that, then I have.

Re: Upgrading from Studio 11 Ultimate to Studio Ultimate 12 Ripoff?

I have upgraded from Studio 8 to 9 to 10 and just in the last few days to Ultimate 12. I think I might have actually started on 7 and got a "free" upgrade to 8. Anyway, I have found each upgrade to work worse than the previous version. I never did get to import any video in version 10. I imported in 9 and used 10 to edit. I can rarely get a menu to function in any version but the first one (v7 I believe) did have a higher rate of success. In all versions, I have found when creating a menu that, if you go one step off the main path, you are best to delete the menu and start over. I bit the bullet and bought 12 Ultimate because a visitor had a HD Canon and I was told 12 would handle that input. I also, silly me, thought that by now some of the bugs might have been corrected. Duh. The phone support is nothing more than a bunch of well meaning people who read from a knowledge base. I have yet to find one who knows the product. In the last 24 hours I've talked to Clark, Stewy, Lein, Jim and one other. It's amazing how many Indian sounding folk have western names and live in California. When one said he worked in San Fran I asked how the weather was. He said he didn't know because he had no windows. I then asked if he got caught in the heavy rain that morning. When he told me he had, I told him that it was strange because it was sunny in San Fran all day long! Hey, with Pinnacle you've got to get your smiles where you can.

Getting back to v12 Ultimate, Has anyone actually got it to produce a movie/dvd with menus?

I find, like all other versions, it frequently crashes, doesn't recognize a new dvd as being empty, grinds to a halt while creating a movie, doesn't finish writing the "last file", will show a second menu page sometimes... and sometimes not, etc. The list goes on.

I'm not quite clear what the point you are trying to make about many of Pinnacle's support staff sounding "Indian". You might like to consider that it to some people it makes you sound racist. I'm sure this isn't your intent.

Dozens. Some simple, some fairly complex. My personal opinion/experience of Studio's progression is that from 1.04 to 9 it steady got better, although it has always required a carefully set-up PC. 10 was a major step forward in functionality but a huge step back in stabillty. 11 and 12 have improved the stability. and added some useful features. I've found plenty of bugs in S12, but none of them are showstoppers for me.

I'm sure I'd feel differently if I were trying to edit AVCHD, or even HD on an underspecced computer.

Re: Upgrading from Studio 11 Ultimate to Studio Ultimate 12 Ripoff?

Oh deary deary me jjn, I wasn't being racist. I was trying to point out that I don't care if support comes from India but, please, don't pretend it doesn't. That remark is aimed at the policy makers at Pinnacle, not the hardworking folk in India who are doing as instructed. I really don't mind where the support comes from as long as it's good (Which has not been the case with Pinnacle.) what I object to is being treated like an idiot who won't know the difference. Clearly the Pinnacle policy makers must have concerns about Indian support otherwise they wouldn't try to mask that they are off-shoring. By the way, I'm not certain it's India, it could be the Philippines which is why I said Indian "sounding." and I happen to be "British sounding" and I don't mind if someone says that.

As for PC configuration. I’ve had three where Studio behaves in an eratic manner with the latest having 4 gig of memory with a T8300 duo processor running at 2.4 mhz. Not ideal but no slouch.

And I'm sure now that you aren't being patronising. Thanks for making your point a little clearer.

HI jnn, FYI I found out that support is situated in the Philippines. I’m fine with that but the powers that be should not try to hide that fact. After speaking to a sales manager I have now been placed in contact with one of the support managers who is attempting to fix some of my issues. So far to no avail but it's good to know they care and listen. Now if only they can find some answers….

Re: Upgrading from Studio 11 Ultimate to Studio Ultimate 12 Ripoff?

    Hi

Yes, I agree. I have been using Pinnacle since version 8. Some time this year, I bought Pinnacle 11 from PC World only a couple of months before I received an email from Pinnacle telling me about the launch of Pinnacle 12 - and I felt a bit put out because I ALWAYS want the latest version, and hence had to pay almost the full price twice within a few months. It's an outrage, considering that 90% of the software is still the same as it was in version 11.

I noticed that PC World just recently were still selling version 11 with no sign of Pinnacle 12, even though 12 was out and about.  I think it should almost be a 'law' that if you buy an old version (from wherever) from a legitimate source and it is upgraded within, say, two months of purchase, that one should receive the upgrade free. I'm sure there will be arguments against this, but I cannot see any value in upsetting people like you and I when we are so loyal. I've also noticed that Pinnacle are now promoting 12 with all sorts of free add-on packages which I didn't get when I bought 12. That sort of digs me in the ribs a bit as well

    Cheers
