Hmm [^o)] Menu different in edit and rendered video

I had the most bizarre problem with a menu in the past couple of days.  I had a video that was working and actually on DVD when I noticed a spelling error and decided to fix it.  One thing led to another and I decided to tweak the menu font size and color a bit.

I deleted the aux files and rendered – lo and behold, the menu was the old menu but the spelling error was indeed fixed.  Must’a been a glitch so do it over – same results.  Ok, delete all the aux files, delete the video_ts files, defrag the drive and try it again, damn!

What else had I done?  Well, I had saved a copy under a different name and had deleted a bunch of stuff in the copy for another purpose.  So I loaded that into studio and to my surprise, the menu in it was also the edited version.  I deleted that project and the video_ts associated with it, all the aux files, defragged again and tried one more time.

Yep, the menu was the correct this time.  I don’t have a clue as to why it happened but I thought I would put this out for others to contemplate and perhaps come up with some ideas as to why.

    Bizarre indeed Jerry.

Do you make your menus from scratch or start with a pre-built one and modify it?

I've never quite worked out where "Save Menu" and "Save Menu as" fit in here. Despite loading a presaved menu, I think the menu gets loaded into the STX project and all changes from then on should be limited to the actual menu in the project. Which isn't your experience!

I wonder if this was one of those cases where the aux files weren't being properly deleted?

How did you add the menu to the project?

    (a) Drag an already-made one out of the Album - and then tweak it in the title editor?
or (b) Open the menu toolbox, click "Create menu" and once inside the title editor then load a menu template and tweak it?

If using method (a) it could be that a cross-reference link is created between the menu template and the copy in the project - so if you do "save menu" the template will get updated instead of prompting you for a new file name. However, just modifying the menu in the project and clicking "OK" ought not to automatically update the template too - I would consider that undesirable and a bug (would be too easy to screw up Studio's standard menus...).

FWIW, I generally work with method (b) and so far haven't had any such odd behaviour of menus except once when working on a project that had been created in Studio 9 (upon conversion temporary .DTL files were created and the S10/S11 project linked to those files (so you had to do "save as" and deliberately overwrite the temporary files to make any changes "stick"). (I quickly got brassed off with that and re-did the project from scratch in S11).

Re: Menu different in edit and rendered video

In this particular case I used a drag and drop standard menu with the background set to transparent. The changes I made were:

    1. Increased the font size slightly

    2. Changed the font colors from white to a shaded orange

    3. Added a semi-transparent object behind the title to make it more legible.

I did not intentionally save it and try to use it but that is a thought that I will check out. I agree that it would be strange that this would cause both videos to have the newly edited menu while the render had the old version.

The first time I deleted the aux files it was from Studio, after that I was doing it manually.  Not only did I delete the stuff in Render, but there is another place Studio tucks stuff and I deleted that also. It really does look like some kind of problem with the aux files but since the cure was deleting the other project, I suspect some kind of "crosslink" occurred...

The only two problems I have had with menus in the past with v11 is the text not staying where I put it and if I have moved the frames, getting them to select in the right order.

Maybe I should try to convince my wife that a new machine would solve all the problems Wink
