One of the major issues that users have with Liquid is files are imported with random timecode settings. This is because all files are imported into a single directory, and Liquid uses the clip-in and clip-out as part of the file name. If you were to import 2 files of the same length, then Liquid would try to give each the same name, and the second file would overwrite the first. So Liquid assigned a unique clip-in to each imported file and set the clip-out as appropriate.
An easy way of getting around this limitation is to use an Avid Logging Exchange (ALE) file. This is a tab-delimited file which supplies the name and location of one or more files to import, the type of each file (video and/or audio), mark-in, mark-out, etc. While you can make one by hand, the easiest way of generating this file is:
- Import all of the files you want to use into Liquid.
- Move all the imported files into their own rack.
- Select that rack in the Project Browser (note: this is the big project window, not the little project browser to the left of the timeline).
- From the File menu, choose Export to File-> XML / ALE
- In the Export dialog, change the directory if desired, choose a file name, change the Save type to ALE and select the Export selected Rack on Projects Clips Tab option. Click on Save to export the ALE file.
You can look at the ALE file in any editor (hint: it's probably easiest to look at in Microsoft Excel, which understands the TAB as a field delimiter). You will note that there are columns called Start, End, Mark IN and Mark OUT. These are used as the clip-in and clip-out points and mark-in and mark-out points. If all you wanted to do is have all imported clips start at 00:00:00.00, then you need do nothing to the ALE file as all files will use 00:00:00.00 as the start and the end is the appropriate value. If you wish to select specific values, make the changes here. You might want to get a good timecode calculator (I use Win-FreeTime, which you can download for free from MediaChance by Clicking Here). Make sure that the mark-in and mark-out are changed appropriately.
Once you're done editing the ALE (if necessary), delete the imported clips from Liquid. IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not delete the media associated with the clips unless you used the Copy option when importing.
Now import the ALE file using File->Import->XML / ALE. Specify the ALE file, and choose Link or Copy as appropriate. If you don't select the Import clips into active rack option, then a new folder will be created in the project with the name of the ALE file. In there you'll find one or more racks, and your imported clips will be in those racks with the timecode you desire.
Hope this helps.
