Picture quality degrades when making slideshows??

    Hello,

I am making a relately simple project, but am having some issues with it.  I am still new'ish to Pinnacle, and am wanting to make a slideshow presentation for my mom's 60th b-day.  I'm scanned in a bunch of old photos, and then adding them to my project.  My project setting is for WideScreen NTSC, as the final output is a DVD for my mom.

I have found whether or not I add effects to the photo (i.e. motion) or just leave it alone, that the quality of the picture is significantlt blurrier than the original scanned image, especially when displayed on the TV.  Last year I used ULead's video product to make a similar project, and the results had photos with clearer output.

Do you guys have exprience with this, and have any suggestions as to what I could do to improve the quality/clarity of the output.  I'm finding on my TV that faces of people are blurry and hard to see.  Thanks!!

what settings are you using when creating the dvd?  How do the post scanned pictures look on your computer outside of the program?--May be helpful to know what scanner settings you are using too.

Try saving your project as an uncompressed AVI file and then burning to disc from another program, or make sure your make movie settings are set to "best quality"

What scanning resolution are the pictures? Do you have progressive encoding check or unchecked (uncheck for slideshows).

if you have the correct resolution for your input pictures they should look great when you have it match the output target.

OK, I actually didn't type very well my problem above.  At the time I asked the question, I actually hadn't created the DVD yet.  I had only created the project on my computer, and as I was doing full screen playback during my editing process, the quality of the pics looked absolutly horrible, no matter what resolution the original.

I just burned a test DVD using non-progressive encoding and the project was NTSC Widescreen, and the final quality is in fact quite nice, and I'm very happy with the output quality!!!  I was just worried based on the playback of my computer that the project would look like crap.

Thanks for your help.  I'm trying to learn this program as best as possible, but I'm slow sometimes...

Good to hear that. It falls under the adage, "never judge a book by its a cover (or Studio preview)".

If you are using ver 10 or 11, under <setup><video and audio preferences> you can enable full resolution preview. If this is not checked the preview will not be very good. If it's checked, the preview will not be as good as the finished DVD, but much better. If your computer lacks horsepower, you may experience some jumps etc when viewing with this checked.

Thanks!  My computer is 'low powered' so I'll keep with the low resolution preview!

Thanks for keeping us posted with your progress and I'm glad you find your output acceptable.
