A few changes to forum configuration would help enormously

    1. Date filter should not have a default of filtering posts older than 1 month.  Helpful threads, important announcements and other sticky posts are not ever seen by the overwhelming majority of users.  New forum users are frustrated that they can't find the answers they need and we're frustrated because we have to write out the same answers again and again that were already posted as sticky threads.
    2. There should be better notification of unread private messages in Inbox.  Community Server (CS) has the ability to show a popup notice upon logging into the forum saying that messages are waiting.  This was very useful on the Avid forums.
    3. A private forum for moderators and admins to discuss forum issues would be helpful.
    4. Searching a specific forum should only return results from that forum.  This can and should work here.  I know that CS can do it.

I have a feeling I've forgotten to list some other important issues.  I'll add to the list as I think of others.

    Thanks.

    Bittmann,

When I split off sumsaris' post here into a new thread, your reply went with it.  Feel free to repost - it wasn't my intent to remove your reply to my post.  Smile  I expected the replies to exist in both threads and planned to take out the part related to the "other" thread in each copy.  When I did that in the other thread and came back here, I found the replies here were already gone - not as expected.

I just want to keep the threads each on one subject.

    Whatever works, I guess.

I'll submit it again, then, as a potential #5:

Searches, "posts not read", etc. should be filtered by "personalization".  If a user has personalized his/her view of the forum such that the e.g. French and German, PCTV and Pinnacle Video Transfer, etc. forums are "turned off" and not visible to that user, it could be argued that they don't want to see new posts for those forums, either.

I discovered I still had the email copy of your reply and was just about to put it back for you.  Thanks.

It's been too long since I spent a lot of time on the Avid forums for me to remember if the same thing works for unread or unanswered posts.  I'll check that out as soon as I can.

Re: A few changes to forum configuration would help enormously

    I'll add a #6, if we're asking for suggestions.

IIRC, all of the email notifications are turned off by default when a new user signs up. I'm thinking that a lot of people never see that a reply has been made to their concern. And since the forum is a little intimidating to a newcomer, they fail to ever find the original post. You can view their profile and see that they never re-visit the forum.

I would think that if you could by default enable the button,  "Enable Email Notifications of forum/thread subscriptions and replies to my posts", there would be a whole lot less ghost threads. If a person comes here intentionally for answers, they might want to receive the answers.

Maybe I'm way off on this, but it's crossed my mind a time or three.Hmm

Item 1 seems to have been fixed.  I've checked both with my usual account and as a "guest" (not logged in) and "show all" is now set for me in each place I looked, even in PMs.  I'm looking forward to more improvements as they can be made.

    Thanks, Pinnacle.  Smile

I'd question that it was ever broken. When I first read this thread, I did some searches and found myself given results that linked to the very first few days of the forum. Perhaps the problem was at your end. Perhaps it was a temporary problem with the forum

I didn't mention it at the time because I'm afraid of contradicting you.

Re: A few changes to forum configuration would help enormously

This was a problem reported to Pinnacle and verified as a problem by Pinnacle.  It was reported a few days ago to us as fixed by Pinnacle.  I have also verified it has been fixed as I already said.  It had nothing to do with searches.

One of the Pinnacle people I spoke with didn't know the date filter here defaulted to 1 month.  Now, it's fixed.  You should be thankful of that.

Jeff, I'm hoping you're sincere, and I'm thinking that you are. But I'm taken aback by the response that you gave.

Please allow my opinions here, for I have a different outlook on things. We've been asking for THIS to be fixed coming on a year now. Bittmann has referenced this old issue as a potential #5, and I would have thought it would have been resolved a long time ago. Since the default date has now been changed, I know that the forum is fixable. If this forum would have been fixed a long time ago, we wouldn't have lost quite a handful of very helpful users. These users have moved on to other forums, but probably would attest to the fact of why they left. Pinnacle might look at this forum as an extension of their help tab, but the supporters of this forum might think of it as more of a community. I will venture to say that the old forum had more of a community feeling, this one has been slow coming on. I should feel as thankful as you do, but I'm having a hard time allowing myself to do so.

    ******************************************************************************************

Scott, if you have any pull, I would like to see you escalate the #5 to the top of the list. As of late, the Studio forum has been blessed with the help of active moderators. And I will allow myself to be very thankful for that.  But if you look over the previous years of help that has been provided by the Studio forum, the regular users are the ones that have been most helpful to the new users. Surely a simple request to get the forum filters working properly as I have shown in my link should be a top priority in my opinion.

I'm not sure why I'm presenting this to a Liquid moderator in a Studio forum, but it's just wishful thinking I guess. Hopefully you will take this post as a sincere response to the issue at hand, and not take it as one to errode the integrity of the Studio forum.

Re: A few changes to forum configuration would help enormously

    Mike,

I think you and I want the same things here as I think most users also want.  We both want the forums to improve and I've been working toward that since even before we started up here.  Yes, it has taken quite some time to see the changes come and I think we'll see some more.  I'll keep working on getting more of those changes made.  I can't make any guarantees except that I'll keep trying.

We're all here in a Pinnacle forum which I'm sure is still hard to get used to.  I think it's hard for all of us to get used to having Liquid on the Pinnacle forums but we're all here on the Pinnacle forums which have areas for many products other than Studio.  Hopefully, there'll be ways to improve the product forum filtering and the language filtering and I'll keep doing what I can to help get those improvements.

I appreciate your willingness to work together to reach the ends we both would like to see.

Jeff, I'm hoping you're sincere, and I'm thinking that you are.
I was mistaken in assuming that Scott was talking about people finding information using search, not scrolling back through over a month's worth of posts. The lower level of traffic and the better posting discipline on the Liquid forums probably makes the fix more useful there than on the Studio forums.

I'm not entirely sure this is a Studio forum, is it? Scott told me I should be thankful, so I am. I would have been even more thankful if the fix was to the general filter behaviour Wink

I will agree with you here, for a great number of new users who come to the forum seem to go for the one-on-one approach.

    Yes

Thanks Scott for spending some time with this. I'm a little limited on my end, for all I can do is rattle the chain a bit. TYVM. Big Smile

A long list of wishes was forwarded to our administrator, based on a certain number of feedbacks we received from users.

Filtering on language, improve the Search function , improve speed etc.

Not possible to get yet an ETA, but moderators are also users so we can only support it.... Smile

Re: A few changes to forum configuration would help enormously

FYI, I just enabled the Language filter for all users, to do some test.

To exclude languges from search or display, open your profile. From the Site Options tab, check the languages you want to exclude and save your profile.

If you do a search or if you click on "Post I have not read", only posts from forums matching with your language filter will be listed. For instance, if you excluded all languages except english, only posts from the english forums will be listed.

One side effect, if you excluded French and you want to read one post from the french Studio forum, you will not be able to access to this forum.A workaround, is to temporary edit your profile and uncheck French.

Note: Italian forums were not yet updated, so Italian forums will still be listed as they appear as "English". Hope it will be question of days...

Thanks to send me your feedbacks or comments.

This will not solve everything, but might help...

Good stuff Bertrand. I think that option was available at some time in the past.

It's working as you describe. What I'd also like to be able to do is exclude Liquid, PCTV and PVT from my Active and Not read lists. Is this goinfg to be possible at some time?

Re: A few changes to forum configuration would help enormously

    Jjn,

    Thanks for the feedback.

The possibility to filter on the forum (eg on Studio English) is not actually possible with the forum. This problem is fixed in a new version of the forum software, but might not be deloyed quickly (customization issues....). So we are looking at an alternative to fix this specific issue. But, I know, it's quite long...

I second that motion.   Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes

And thanks, Bertrand.  This change was sorely needed.  (Now if we can just get an S11 patch that fixes the no audio on DVD.  Wink)

    Bertrand,

These are a couple of great improvements.  Hopefully, it will be possible soon to get the other functions working as we'd like them.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Sorry for this, but I had to disable the Language Filter due to a problem we found for some international users. The filter will be enable again once this problem will be solved by our developers

    Keep you informed

The big superiority of English. I wish everybody could only speak one language (cowboy or not). But that's one that easy. Still some small islands of irreducible, as French, German, Italian etc. who really don't want to speak English, especially US English. Don't know why... Smile
