Definately new to this and could use some help (please?)

    Hi everyone!

I was lucky enough to get the studio movieBox ultimate for Christmas and, well, it's February and I still am not sure what to do with it.  It was a gift for me so I could transfer old VCR tapes for my classes into DVDs but I have no clue as to what to do now that I finally loaded the software to the laptop (where I have a DVD burner).

Do I need to purchase something to hook the VCR to the box?  What?

    I'm just lost and frustrated.

Did the hardware/software not come with any instructions about how to connect your VCR to the Moviebox?

What's on the back of your VCR? The moviebox should have three RCA sockets marked Yellow, Red and White. Are there coresponding sockets on the VCR? If so, you need three RCA to RCA cables to connect them together.

Otherwise, can you describe what sockets your VCR has?

    Thank you for your response.

I'm ovewhelmed with the book that came with the product and I didn't see anything in it at all about RCA cables.  I have a few VCRs and I'll try to find one that works with that and buy the cables.

If that is all I need to do, I again thank you for you time and patience.  If I'm still stuck, I may be back requesting more assistance.  My husband would probably figure this out fast, but he is away with the army.  I considered having a teenager come in for this LOL.

    Thanks:)

Reminds me of an exchange from an old Marx Brothers movie:

Other person: "But it's so easy a child could do it!"

Groucho: "Quick, someone get me a child."

sigh...I thought I had it. I did have it! Then, it all fell apart ! Help, again, please?

    HI.

I have the cables.  I'm hooked up.  I figured out how to copy the vhs to the dvd.  I had it!  I could even see the movie (chevey chase's xmas vacation) in the little box!  I was so very excited! I went to do some course work and returned when the movie was to finish and....

nothing.  But this was my fault.  Can you believe the plug for the laptop was loose in the outlet and the battery died.  yeah.  Somethings could only happen to me and I'm not even blonde!

So.  I bought new DVD to record today and I was ready. I had  8 great VHS tapes I use at school.   I was pumped; I could show the DVD with my projector instead of showing it on a TV screen.  Whooohooo.

But now I can't get Pinnacle to work. Sigh...

I went through all the steps as I did for xmas vacation, but when I reach the start recording, nothing  shows up  in the little box and it won't start.

What am I not doing?!  Is there a particular type of DVD that I must have?

I'm turning grey here, guys....can you help a middle aged woman who acts blonde??  (no offense to more technologically savy blonde women out there...my oldest daughter is blonde and she's smarter than me.  Unfortunately, she also lives too far away to help with this!)

I'll try, but I need to know what program you're capturing with. I'm assuming Studio 11, but assumptions are a dead end street.

A little background on your capture will set the tone. Big Smile

Re: sigh...I thought I had it. I did have it! Then, it all fell apart ! Help, again, please?

I use the Pinnacle card, but the process should be exactly the same for us. WE'll do a little test here, maybe it will help. Your moviebox should be plugged into the back of your computer in a USB 2.0(high speed) port. Try different ones for testing purposes, sometimes they will have different results.

Go to the capture page, and don't do a thing. Turn the VCR on and play your tape. If all is hooked up properly, you should see some video in the preview window. You should also hear audio through your computer speakers. If so, press "capture".

A pop up window will appear to direct where your captures will be saved. You can custumize this location, but for now just make note of the location. (click the folder icon to the right to see this location).  Enter "simpletest" for your name and select  " one minute" for the duration. Proceed on by pressing "Start Capture". Under the preview window, you will see the captured time start to add up .

After the capture is finished, go to the edit page, and you should see your capture in the album page. Drag this video to the timeline, and it should play properly.

Let me know the results, for this is a good place to stop for me. We can go forwards if you're sucessful, or back up if you're not.

Make sure that you have applied the latest patches and drivers:
    STUDIO 11.1.1
    MOVIEBOX

    Thanks, Mike.

I made sure the two patches were on my computer and I did as you suggested.  I had originally used the Instand DVD recorder (another CD) that came with the purchase.

This time, however, I just used the studio software.

I thought we had it since I could hear the sound coming from my computer and the timer was ticking away.  However, I never saw the picture on the little box.  I was still hoping that it was writing to the DVD, but it didn't.

    Any other suggestions?

Again, thanks for taking the time to help me out.  I really appreciate it.  I'm heading to bed now--it's 20 below and that electric blanket is calling me.  I'll check in tomorrow to see if you or anyone else can help me out.

If you capture video it the Studio software proper, it doesn't write directly to the DVD -- it writes to your hard disk so you can edit the video before rendering and writing. If you don't want to do any editing, just copy all of the video in the Edit window to the storyboard/timeline, then chose the Make Movie tab and write it off to disk.

For conversations' sake, lets continue to do so. Yes

I'm not at my editing comp right now, but check one of the settings for me. Go to the capture section, and find the capture source setup screen. Make sure the device setting shows the proper capture device. Also, on the capture screen and to the left of the discometer, there should be an icon of a camera I think, click that icon and a slide out window will open. Make sure the video input you are using matches the setting. (Svid or composite) If you have the device hooked up with the yellow cable, it's composite.

Hope you didn't freeze last night.....Big Smile

I know this probably won't help so much, but I never could get it right when needing to copy vhs tapes using studio, so I use Sonic instead..its very easy to use, then save it to the computer and then bring it to studio for editing.

    Yeah I'm with you Kim.

What is easy for me is to  {A} Connect my old vcr to my dvd recorder

{B} transfer vhs tapes to my dvd recorders hard drive.

{C} onto a dvd then into Studio. Big Smile

Re: Definately new to this and could use some help (please?) -- lain?

Thank you all for your help.  I really do appreciate it!

ok....I finally took that product back.  There was way too much wrong with it (even the store geek had problems).  I picked up the dazzle video creator platinum and I'm starting over again.

I managed to a vhs to dvd but didn't get any audio???  I heard the audio when it was capturing.

    Any helpful advice?

By the way, Lain- what do you connect to your VCR to DVD?  I have a burner in my laptop so could I just connect the VCR to the laptop burner and copy a vhs to dvd?  It could solve a problem at this time!
