How to use old smartsound with S11 Help

I've just installed S11 Ultimate and realized that the smartsound clips I was used to using (in S9+) often are no longer available under the usual tab. Can they still be used in S11? How can I import them into S11 for use?

Yes you can, but you have to install the smartsound interface first, go to there web site get the latest patch version, (for version 10+) you will have to load it three times before it will work, the first time studio will not see it, the second time it really un-installs it, and the third time it will work. You might have to re-install you music though. I think I had to.

Re: How to use old smartsound with S11 Help

Does it matter that I was running smartsound with S9+ (not 10)? As for reinstalling the music...do you mean directly from the S9+ discs? Thanks for your help with this.

Re: How to use old smartsound with S11 Help

If you have lots of SmartSound installed - and if it's not already too late - copy your SmartSound music library (directory) to some safe location.  After you get the it functional, restore all the SmartSound music files from the copied location.

This isn't always necessary, but I've had to re-load all my 15 CD library a couple of times.  This is a very fast way to restore the library.  I think you just have to "rebuild the database" or something like that, but it's a single-step operation and you don't have to wait for each CD to copy to your hard drive.

Also, by running the little installer thing from the SmartSound site, you get a bonus track.  Cool.

Re: How to use old smartsound with S11 Help

Okay...I ran the smartsound installer patch (for versions 10 and up). First time it went through fine...although, like you said, ghuck, S11 did NOT recognize it. I tried running it a second time (for the uninstall) and I got a fatal error (error: -1603, fatal error during installation) and it ultimately did not go throught. Restarted, tried again...same error.

Any chance I needed to do this BEFORE installing the latest S11 patch?

    Island,

I have searched and searched for some old messages am certain I posted, but I can't find them.

Try searching for "QuickTracks".  Here is one example.

I just can't find what I'm looking for, and I've exhausted all reasonable key words to search on.  I really thought I'd be able to find a useful post that would walk you through the process, but I'm coming up dry.  Sorry.

The SmartSound website has a support message about the 1603 error that should help:

Re: How to use old smartsound with S11 Help

I actually just found that same 'help' on smartsounds website...and it worked, sort of.

I took the steps mentioned here http://www.smartsound.com/support/updates.html?product=pinnacle and when I ran into the 1603 error I took these steps http://www.smartsound.com/support/answers/link.php?id=378 .

I opened up S11 and low and behold...smartsound was there! Finally! Then reinstalled my quicktracks from my Pinnacle S9+ disc and all seemed fine...until I tried to use them.

Now, when I click 'preview' or 'add to project', the music does not play through...that is, it can't be heard. If I click the 'preview' button, the button stays 'depressed' as if the music IS playing a preview for me to hear and then 'regulates' as if the song or preview is done. But nothing was heard! Not only that, when I try to preview other music in my quicktracks, it asks me for 'Pinnacle Disc 1' (Retry or Cancel)!

Of course, the Scorefitter tracks ALL work and can be heard on preview, but even though they NOW show up, NONE of the quicktracks from smartsound will play/can be used.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Re: How to use old smartsound with S11 Help

I remember struggling with it too, and that's one reason I'm so upset at not being able to find my old posts about.  I know there was one recommended step in someone's 8-steps-to-success instructions that I scoffed at so I skipped it.  I guess it was an important step after all.

Eventually I simply beat it into submission.

Delete the QuickTracks and install it again.

Or try an install over it and see what it says.

After "too many" tries it eventually started working and has been flawless ever since.

Re: How to use old smartsound with S11 Help

Thanks, Viking. I've uninstalled and reinstalled so many times now, I'm not sure any of this is helping. Can't seem to find anyone with the same problem (S11 recognizes SS but doesn't play the files). Guess I'll keep trying and see what comes of it. I'll post more if/when I find a solution for future users.

Off topic, but, to top it all off, I just found out my car repairs are costing me $500...you know you're having a bad week when it's only Tuesday and the week's highlight so far was Monday morning, LOL.

Re: How to use old smartsound with S11 Help

    Try this,

    1) reboot your computer to clean out anything left over in memory.

    2) Run the SS installer one more time to unstall the software, then start up studio 11, and make sure it gone. If you get an error here, then your probably safe to manually delete all the SS program files, post back and I'll go in and figure out were there all stored.

    3) If you have a registry cleaner program run it to delete the garbage out of the registry, if you do not have one skip this, I like to make sure it's not a registry type problem, which I do not believe it is from what you have said but one never knows in windows.

    4) Reboot your computer.

    5) Run the SS installer again.

Re: How to use old smartsound with S11 Help

Tried what you suggested, ghuck. Surprisingly this time, I did NOT get that error (1603) like last time. However, I came out with the same result. Music was there, but no sound on previews or in projects when added (some selections asking for Pinnacle Disc 1).

I Also tried using the SS installer from my Pinnacle disc (S9+) and that, in fact, also showed the SS music available in S11, but, again, without sound.

I've also noticed that the 'all' tab in SS music WILL play a downloaded preview...but I guess that's not anything of substance since that's simply downloaded straight from the internet. I'm wonderin if I purchase one of those downloadable tracks independently, if it will play in S11 like it should. Not sure how much each costs (yet) but might be willing to finally take that chance soon if I can't find another solution.

I'd be very skeptical about that.

It sparked an idea though... can you "rebuild" the music library/database?  It should be somewhere in the "add music" stuff on my "add a SmartSound track to my project" panel.

I suspect it's been done a dozen times already.  And I also suspect if you hadn't done it that you wouldn't see your list of music to add to your project.

I'm just fishing here, trying to look for something that will kick it in the butt and make it start working.

I'm extremely frustrated by this, so I can only imagine how you must be feeling.  Angry

Also, that "asking for Pinnacle Disc 1" must be a huge clue, but I don't understand its significance.  Grrr...  Super Angry

Re: How to use old smartsound with S11 Help

That "asking for the Pinnacle music disc" is because the Smartsound plugin cannot find the music (either because it was installed somewhere other than in the default folder, or because it erroneously thinks that the music is not actually installed on the hard disk.

    (a) If the installation from "smartsound pinnacle music.exe" or whatever has put the files in the default place you should find it all under
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SmartSound Software Inc\

You should finds at least four folders there
Encoding - appears to contain information in .blx files about all available Smartsound libraries
Exporters (this folder may not exist) - on my system it's empty
Libraries - should contain the following files - Compiled Libraries.xsl, Master Libraries.xsl, UserData.xsl, Pinnacle 1.sdx. May contain other .sdx files if you have loaded other Smartsound music or sound effect discs
Previews - you may have cached copies of downloaded previews in here - on my system it's empty
Sound Files - You should have the 25 .sds files from the "Pinnacle 1" library in here

If you have all the sound files in the right place, but have some of the "Libraries" folder's files missing you can try as Viking suggested - rebuild the libraries
Open the Smartsound tool, click on the "Smartsound..." button at the bottom left and on the "About" page click "Rebuild Libraries"

If that failed, try making the Smartsound "librarian" search for your music
Open the Smartsound tool, click on the "Smartsound..." button at the bottom left. Check the "Libraries" and "Folders" tabs to see if there's anything untoward such as a wrong "common Smartsound files" folder. Then try the "Migration" page and have the Smartsound librarian search your hard drives for the Smartsound music - hopefully it will find it and add it to the library.

Re: How to use old smartsound with S11 Help

I actually have a "news" folder under the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SmartSound Software Inc\. Is that out of the ordinary?

Strange...I used the search folders and hard drive functions for SS apps and sound files (under the migration tab) and it came up empty (no files found for migration). Does that just mean that the files I do have are in the correct place and there are no other files to move?

Could I try creating a new folder for these apps and sound files (ie: rather than the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SmartSound Software Inc\ )? Don't want to try if it will create more confusion though.

Re: How to use old smartsound with S11 Help

    islandlong,

Did you manage to get your Pinnacle Smart sound tracks working? I have a similiar situation.  I want the S9 Smartsound tracks to work with a fresh install of S11U on a new hard drive.

Before I started with the new hard drive I had the foresight to copy the 25 Pinnacle Smartsound SDS tracks from my previous S9 install. I now have  S11U up and running with Smartsound 3090 quick tracks. No problems installing quicktracks with a fresh install of S11U. Smartsound sees my Smartsound Strata music for both the 48k tracks from within SF Pro and the 44k tracks from within Pinnacle plugin,,,,but Smartsound does not find my Pinnacle SDS tracks!!  I've tried pointing it to the correct folder, rebuilding the libray etc but it seems Smartsound doesn't recognise the SDS tracks I copied from my old S9 Pinnacle install.

Is there something more I should have backed up before I started? Or is there some other trick needed to get the Pinnacle1 tracks back into the Smartsound plugin.

If I have to I could reload the ghost image I made just before I installed the new hard drive and locate the missing files ,,, if I need them.

    Issue now resolved

I emailed Smartsound support and they sent me an installer for Pinnacle music. I now have all my music Studio music back :-)
