in it's class, the others are all ADCHD, so I kinda got my mind into
that mode. HDV is fine for what I want.

Bertrand, I downloaded the HV20 clip from the Pinnacle site. Thanks for the pointer. George, the comparison of the HV20 vs. the VX2K is just what I'm looking for (I've got a VX2100). I'll check it out.

TVJohn, thanks for the pointers. I always set my cameras for manual, and will color balance the HV20 to be as close to the VX2100 as it can get. I'm not worried about focus etc. as once it's all set up it's going to be locked down.

Re: HV20 users - Need some samples

My experience with HDV:
Shoot as much with a tripod as possible.
Set the gain controls to manual.
Do your best to color balance at the shoot.
Focus is big. Out of focus sticks out like a sore thumb with HD.
I have found that TmpGe Source Creator 4 does a wonderful job scaling and offers
2 pass VBR to DVD. You also have options for progressive output.
Enjoy the eyeopening experience...
Re: HV20 users - Need some samples

Dave,

A search might be worthwhile or maybe Ed can post them again. However, as I remember, the trick to get good low light performance with this camera is to use 24p. Here is some information that may help.

Re: HV20 users - Need some samples

If HV20 was AVCHD I wouldn't buy it.

The picture under good lighting is comparable with a Z1.

I have tested and seen this myself.

Re: HV20 users - Need some samples

Dave,

I know that the outdoor, well-lit scenes are very nice. It's the indoor footage I need to consider. A primary purpose of this camera will be unattended operation from a balcony in a church. My plan is to pan and scan the SD frame from within the HD frame so as to provide from a wide static shot to a medium follow from within post. Much of the time this will be daytime with what might best be described as average to slightly less than average interior illumination. Sometimes it will be at night and will be poorly lit. And sometimes it will be a reasonably well lit play on a stage.

If anyone has some sample clips that fit what I'm describing, I'd love to see them; preferably the original AVCHD footage. I can provide a website to upload if you don't have one from which I can download. I want to play around a bit with scenes similar to what I'll be shooting and see how the images work. My only restriction is that I need clips that were shot using 30i and not 24p as I have to cut this together with video from another camera, and it doesn't have 24p.

Thanks.
