I can't beleive Liquid is not top dog!

I used adobe a little at video school and did not like it. I started and learned editing with Studio 9 from there I went to Liquid. So I really do not know all that is out there. I don't do video to make a living just extra money. I read the posts in here and I see you guys are way more advanced in video and computers then I am. So I started looking around at other video editing software at the same price as Liquid. I am watching the tutorials and I see how much easier and faster I can edit in liquid compared to these others. I was watching how to trim and capture in Vegas. Having to push this and that and tell vegas what I was capturing (SD or HD) where liquid just knows when it starts to capture whether it's HD or SD 4.3 or 16.9. It showed me just how advanced Liquid is and I am still using 6.1. It seams to be disappointing what is out there. It's like taking a step down to change from Liquid. Just voiceing my opinion. Oh and I just bought 7.2 couple of months ago and avid did offer me Media Composer without the 3rd party stuff for $299.99.

AVCHD tool update!!!!!

Ok here is the thread for the status on the AVCHD tool for Liquid that is yet to be titled. As you can all see I have decided to go forward to see if this can be done. I cannot guarantee 100% that it will work but I will give it my best. I have run a very crude test and can get the video to transcode in about realtime on my el cheapo AMD quad core. Thats not really bad considering the format. I wish it could be faster and perhaps it will on a faster system. I have a lot of stuff to test yet but I hope to get most of it figured out this weekend work permitting.

I will however need help from all of you. In order to support the massive amount of different AVCHD formats out there I need to know exactly how each camera shoots. What I need is a very small sample like a few seconds. I also need to know what file structure is used on the SD cards. This is super critical to make the tool easy to use to transfer an entire card. I can make it load each clip but I think it would be much better to read the meta data files on the card.

Also note that this tool should work with Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere as well. In fact I plan on even making it work with Final Cut Pro. My hope is that this tool can be used to also rewrap files to switch between PC and Apple. You gotta love how flexible mpeg2 really is.

Hopefully we can at least expand Liquid a few more years by making it AVCHD friendlier.

Media Composer 4 upgrade for Liquid users

OK guys, here is my idea.. We had some pretty good success the last time we offered this to the Liquid faithful. I want to go back to the well one last time and see if Avid would be willing to do it again. This is strictly in the exploration phase. I have not even asked Avid if they would in fact be willing to do it again. I do know the first thing they are going to ask me is how many I think would be sold.

So I'm throwing it out to you guys here. If I could get Avid to offer the $1499 loyalty upgrade from Liquid to Media Composer 4 (with all 3rd party software), would you buy it?

This is Toolbar, kind of like the one on Macs, that you can drag and drop as many app, folder or link icons into that you want, Lock it ande It hide it, it shrinks and grows on mouseover... really quite amazing and useful. Great interface controls. I've been using it for a long time now with no problems. It's presently up and running beautifully on my new Windows 7 installations as well. Also tons of really nice free down loadable .png icons available as well.

What is it?
RocketDock is a smoothly animated, alpha blended application launcher. It provides a nice clean interface to drop shortcuts on for easy access and organization. With each item completely customizable there is no end to what you can add and launch from the dock.

Sony HDR FX1 Cassette error message

Has anyone on the forum experienced this message "re insert cassette". It has started to occur relatively frequently, even when I popped in a head cleaning tape, which I couldn't get to run at all. I have read on the net about bashing the camera on the side to re seat a roller but looking into the tape compartment the roller seems to be seated ok. However I haven't looked down here before so I'm not sure I know what I'm looking for.

I have generally used JVC tapes in the camera, almost exclusively, until recently when the store had only Panasonic, so I wondered if this may be a factor.

If not, then could any of the UK readers of the forum recommend a repairer please?

The camera has probably not more than 100 hours on it, bit dissapointing really.

Video direct to my laptop's DVD writer via firewire?

I just had a standalone DVD recorder that went belly up and am trying to save some money. I know I've seen software before that allegedly would allow you to record directly to your computer's DVD burner. Does anyone know what software might allow me to do this? Reliability?

Windows 7 and Liquid 7.2

Hi Guys,

Thought you might be interested in the facdt I have just loaded Window 7 onto my editiing computer, and it works so well, except Title Deko standard and Pro. Which is interesting as on Vista and the Windows 7 RC, standard Title Deko disn't work, but Pro worked quite well.

I Understand 7.2 does not support Window 7.

All other function work normally, even generating to tape etc.

If anyone has any solutions would love to know.

Greetings fellow editors/filmakers.Firstly I luv cutting on Liquid 7.2 (Background rendering brilliant for work flow) it has got me through a couple of thousand production edits.In short I feel comfortable with the program .I joined this forum to gain user knowledge from fellow editors as there is absolutely no product support in Australia.If you ring Avid Australia they tell you they are no longer offering support for Liquid.I think they would like to kill the software.Media Composer and Final no where near Liquid in a PC environment.Add Adobe After effects and you have a great combo.

There are a few questions I have are as follows.

* Currently I am upgrading my edit computer to Inteli7 920 and Asus P6T6 G card.I note the forum discussions on running W7 operating system and subsequent problems with title deko.I was going to reload XP pro to save any cliches.I have too much editing to do for extensive downtime whilst soughting out issues.Any advice would be great.

*Is Avid going to upgrade software and develop compatibilty with W7?

Hi to all out there

Here in the forum it says liquid is not dead also not chrome xe is end of line! But then why is there no update to version 7.2 since more then an year? Where is the support for liquid user.

Since one year now there are so many new cameras and codecs where coming out and liquid did not get one of these! Again whre is the support then?

I know there "shell" come an new version "nextgen" but when and this question must be allowed when do we get more import formats like XDCAM HD 4:2:2 1920x1080

Sony ex3 format(the clipbrowser is not functional if you need ages to transcode files whats the matter of filming on file based formats?) and also there is now clipbrowser 2,6 version which also does not work with liquid (the mxf) but with any other edit software! Whats the matter on this point that we still have to use version 2.0?

And also no support for avchd whats the point here it work in studio!?

Please can we get nativ import for these formats and more other formats like import apple pro res 422 it is ok if it needs to render!

I must say even adobe premiere now supports all these formats so whats the piont for liquid it would also be ok if you find a way with the main concept people they got an plugin also for adobe even if it cost it would be ok!

and please to the avid/pinnacle support give us an answer on that why there is nothing coming in this way i can understand that if you work on an new projct it needs time but still just support for codecs can´t be so much an problem!

If Smetvid can make codecs and plugins why not pinnacle?

Liquid Blu-Ray Authoring

What authoring software are people using to create Blu-Ray discs? My first thought was Adobe Encore in CS4 but before shelling out hard earned dosh & risking a battering by `er indoors I thought I`d pose the question.

Ideally, I`d like to be able to create discs comprable or better than that which I currently do within Liquid by authoring off of the timeline.

Liquid's Future ???

I recently read the comments from the Liquid Immersion front and have both shared the information with our organization and generated some concerns. Here it is both our summary and search in a nutshell:

No "new" Liquid = NO future feature sets and NO new video format solutions
No "new" Liquid = NO future support
Avid/Pinnacle wants to avoid making a Liquid "new" version that could possibly hurt Avid "other" editing products.
Waiting to find a solution that will replace Liquid will delay our companies learning curve while also working with no support for the HD areas we are moving to (like 1080i 4:2:2 P2).
The "new" Liquid replacement will more than likely be a consumer/prosumer style of editing product.

If I am incorrect on the analogies on the future of Liquid I would much appreciate the input. We have based our entire video production business around Liquid and with the future of its' improvements at the edge of extinction (no Liquid 8 - liquidate; no Liquid 9 - liquid no) with regard to updates, feature sets, improvements, enhancements, our business would be at the edge of the same conclusion.

We have already tried out a "new" product and while satisfied (more so on some of the feature sets) like all, we resist change and especially like some of the Liquid components and the "total" solution it offers.

If someone can provide a shade of light on the subject on the "Future of Liquid" without overstepping any corporate boundries, it would be most helpful and directional in the future of our business plan.

S-PVA monitors or TN monitors

I am finally upgrading system. The problem at hand is finding a good monitor. I had a few in mind but in researching I found that S-PVA and IPS panels would be better for best color reproduction. So IPS is out of my price range and I am looking for S-PVA monitors. A little difficult because the manufactures don't list what is what. Most of what I see are TN panels which are lower cost but color is not as accurate. So does anyone think it is important to go S-PVA panel or just get a good TN panel? Anyone know of some S-PVA's around $300-350? Hobestly O would like to get a 24 in. I believe many said the highest you should go is 22 for liquid but i also have exp pro and plan on staying in Avid NLEs. Everything I found on the internet is discontinued or $500. still searching

OT: ID3 tags when burning CDs

OK--Not video editing, but media creation so I guess this fits just a bit.

In addition to video and PowerPoint production, I have been doing some audio work for a Home Based Education curriculum company. Recently, I completed 2 CDs with up to 80 tracks of lessons for students. After assembling the recordings, I burn the master, which is sent off to a company for duplication, printing & packaging. The recordings are MP3s and I have edited the ID3 tag information with Authoring information, and I can see the information when looking at the MP3 Properties in Windows. When I burn the MP3s to the CD as a music or audio CD (meaning that they are translated to .CDA files) the ID3 tag information is not carried to the CD. I know this can be done as I have CDs from which you can see the ID3 tags.

Everything is from an Unknown Disk and labeled Track 1, Track 2 and etc, instead of the name of the CD and the actual label of the track.

I have tried Audition, Nero 8 Burning ROM and Nero 8 Express, and even burned them from a WMP Burn List. I have searched the Internet for answers and while I can tell you lots about ID3 tags themselves, I have found nothing that has helped.

I have gone into WMP and turned off all options that allow the information to be refreshed (replaced) with album data from the Internet as the discs do not appear in any on-line database yet.

Any ideas?

NLE packages and what we can do. Making a better Liquid

I often hear a lot of complaints about how NLE X can do this and Liquid cannot. Well that may be true what what exactly does it mean for NLE X or Y to be able to do that function. Most NLE's that seem to have a lot of features do so because they are a package of tools. Having a package of tools makes the NLE itself seem to be able to do a lot more. No NLE is immune to this either. Avid, Sony, Apple and Adobe all do it.

One of Liquids biggest complaints of course has been Blu-ray authoring. Almost every other NLE out there that has Blu-ray authoring however does so with a stand alone program. So why can't we do the same with Liquid? We can and in fact there is a thread that talks about a perfect solution for Blu-ray and DVD authoring for Liquid. The only major difference is that you didn't buy them together.

So lets look at what is out there currently for these NLE packages.

Adobe CS4 - the mother ship of NLE packages. Adobe includes everything except the kitchen sink which they will be glad to sell you I'm sure. You have Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, Encore, Flash, Soundbooth and many others. This group allows you to pretty much do anything you could ever imagine except for 3D animation. The package is not cheap however coming in at $1,700.00.

Apple FCS - More or less the industry standard these days in the art world. This is another solid package. Ironically it does not have Blu-ray authoring but it makes up for that with one of the best DVD authoring programs in the industry and one of the most nifty and creative motion graphics programs in the world. The new version which just came out dropped greatly in price although the price will still set you back $1,000.00.

Avid - We all know of Avid here. Media composer can do a lot but a lot of what it does is because of extra tools that come with the package. Blu-ray authoring and extra animation and effects all all stand alone programs. All of this can be had for the insanely low price of $2,500.00. If you act quickly Avid will even knock off $0.00 off the purchase price. Avid is a very solid NLE so if you stand the price it is worth it.

Sony Vegas - The baby of the bunch. It isn't really much of a package but it's DVD and Blu-ray authoring is a stand alone program.

Liquid doesn't have a package of course unless you consider Hollywood FX and Title Deko Pro as part of the package. So what can we do to get Liquid to an even playing field of these other NLE packages? Well we can add our own tools to the mix. A package is only as good as the tools it has. We actually have a certain advantage over the other packages. Companies like Adobe and Apple force you to use a certain tool. For example what if you really hate After Effects and prefer Combustion or have no intention of using After effects ever in your life time. It used to be where we artists had a choice which tools we used to get a job done. Now companies force feed us a group of tools and expect us to only ever use they tools they make. Soundbooth is another example of a pretty horrific program that I wouldn't be caught dead using.

So we Liquid users are actually at an advantage here. We can use only the tools we want to use and we don't have to pay for stuff we will never use or want. I also know that many of us are on a budget and we like the lower price point of Liquid editing. Well luckily there is a lot we can do the is very low cost or free.

The Liquid Production Package

Liquid - Our favorite NLE that has unmatched 2D/3D pan/rotate/scale animation with multiple tracks. Cost $499.00

Title Deko Pro - Tool designed just for creating high quality still titles. You cannot animate the titles or do special effects but it is a very solid tool for still titles. Cost $0.00

HollywoodFX Pro - the grand daddy of effects packages. The quality may be a tad cheesy but nothing else out there comes close to spreading the cheese. Cost $0.00

Gimp - This is our Photoshop replacement for our Production package. This allows us to adjust and create images to use in our video projects. Cost $0.00

Inkscape - Vector graphics tool as our replacement for Illustrator. This allows us to create vector graphics that can be exported to use in our videos. Cost $0.00

Blender - The ultimate open source program for our Production Package. This acts as a much more advanced replacement for the Avid FX program bundled with Media Composer. It has a steep learning curve but once you get to know it you can create 3D titles and any form of animation for endless creative options. Blender allows the sort of animation no other NLE package currently has. You can also do a decent amount of compositing inside of Blender. Cost $0.00

Audacity - Basic high quality audio editor as our replacement for Soundbooth. This isn't the best audio editor in the world but it has a bit more precision and tools for fine tuning your audio then what you find in Liquid. Cost $0.00

TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4 - Our own version of Encore for our Production package. This package allows us to create more advanced DVD's as well as interactive Blu-ray discs. It allows direct import as fused HDV projects from Liquid. Cost $99.00

Smetvid's codec presets - Give the option of working with an intermediate form of video coded in Liquid. This acts sort of like Apple's Prores422 video codec. Cost $0.00

Smetvid's yet unnamed conversion tool - Allows video to be converted to one of the Smetvid codec presets. Can also be used to encode H264 video for Adobe flash. Cost $0.00

Total package cost = $600.00

What is it still missing - an easy to use compositing and motion graphics program, more advanced audio editing tool., giant price tag, direct linkage between all the programs, web authoring tools for HTML, Flash or Silverlight.

Pinnacle Video Transfer device

I'm considering purchasing a Pinnacle Video Transfer unit to use it as a poor man's solid state recorder for my VX-2000. Has anyone tried this? Is it any good in it's best resolution (720 x 480, 1500 kbits/sec.) I'm thinking of plugging a high speed flash stick in it and constructing a battery compantment that would run the unit off battery power. Am I crazy? Has anyone tried this?

I HAVE A DUAL XEON 2.66 HP-WX8000 MACHINE WITH 2 GIG RAM AND XP PRO

IT ALREADY HAS PINNACLE LIQUID SILVER(5.6 VERSION) ON IT WITH THE HARDWARE AND RENDER CARDS - QUESTION....CAN INSTALL 7.2 WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS?

I WOULDN'T RUN THESE PROGRAMS AT THE SAME TIME BUT I WOULD LIKE TO USE 7.2 ON THIS MACHINE WHEN I'M NOT USING 5.6.......ANY FORSEEABLE PROBLEMS ON INSTALLATION OR OPERATION???

ANYBODY EVER DONE THIS BEFORE?

Have just installed Windows 7 (professional) and Avid 7v2 + TDRt. I forgot to cancel out and use TD Pro. Needless to sayTD would not open from Avid.. Nothing to lose at this stage so I tried to over write TD by opening the TDRt (setup.exe) in compatibility mode XP SP2. I was offered a option to repair the original installation. Took this route but again the Titler would not open from within Avid.

Uninstalled TD and tried again running setup.exe in compatibility mode. This time the installation seems to work. It opens from Avid and a few simple tests showed it to be functioning.

Can anyone else confirm this or have I just struck lucky?
