    Poor MP4 quality

I have quite a few projects based on DV sources or conversions. In the past I've been able to do MPEG-2 exports that look great. Then, recently, I got a Roku device that doesn't recognize MPEG files but is happy with MP4. So I thought I would just re-render these projects in MP4 (via Studio 22 Ultimate) and be off to the races. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to make MP4 exports that look as good as they should. First I tried doing 1080p exports, even though the original material was 480p. Didn't help. Still had slight softness and lots of artifacts. Then I tried adjusting the output to interlaced instead of progressive, which helped plenty. Apparently Studio's de-interlacer is pretty bad. Still looked soft, though, so I tried adjusting the output from 640 x 480 to match the original's 720 x 480. This just made the aspect ratio wrong. What am I missing?
