Update:

The message "Desktop 96 percent full" in Pinn 17 seems to refer to the storage location, in my case the "Desktop."

What it really means is that the entire hard drive is "96 percent full".

Changing the storage location (on the same drive) has no effect, and neither does deleting render files.

So--time to clean up the drive, or direct Pinnacle to store elsewhere.
