So the advice they gave you was correct and the phrase "one has to copy individual clips and paste them." was one of your own.

It may have been that you hadn't made the timeline active by clicking on a clip and ensuring that it was selected first, but following the above advice does select all the timeline clips on my installation.

Perhaps you could try it again. Selection is indicated by a (subtle) orange border around a clip.
