This time, however, I just used the studio software. 

I thought we had it since I could hear the sound coming from my computer and the timer was ticking away.  However, I never saw the picture on the little box.  I was still hoping that it was writing to the DVD, but it didn't.

 
If you capture video it the Studio software proper, it doesn't write directly to the DVD -- it writes to your hard disk so you can edit the video before rendering and writing. If you don't want to do any editing, just copy all of the video in the Edit window to the storyboard/timeline, then chose the Make Movie tab and write it off to disk.
