Replace the same clip with clip in different video format (e.g. .m2ts by .mp4)

Replace the same clip with clip in different video format (e.g. .m2ts by .mp4)

I had finished my Video editing with all the cuts and trimming.  Some Clips were very shaky and I used afterwards a separate application to stabilize these Clips (with same resolution and same frame rate). I deleted the un-stabilized clips out of the library. With a new start of Pinnacle Studio ULT 22 I hoped to reassign the stabilized Clips. But it is only possible to reassign Clips with the same file type (.m2ts).

I don't want to convert the stabilized .mp4-clips into .m2ts-format.

I also don't want to repeat the editing of the Clip, the trimming positions (start and end Position within the Clips) are not visible in Studio.

Does anyone have a tip or trick to replace the clips in the library or on the edit-timeline?

Perhaps this is a silly suggestion, but M2TS and mp4 wrappers can sometimes contain the same type of video. Have you tried just renaming the extension from m2ts to mp4 and seeing what happens?

Did you try the built -in stabliser before you did this?

    a) rename .mp4 to .m2ts does not work, I get a grey round arrow on the time-line ( at least in my case)

    b) the separate stabilizer gets better results and the build-in stabilizer is very CPU time consuming and slows down the work with Pinnacle Studio, in future I should stabilize the clips before editing

Many thanks for your quick response.

    Any other recommendations ?

The ony tedious solution I see is to replace each original clip on TL by the new stabilized, one by one.

    Here's an experiment for you.

If you have your stabilized mp4 clips in your Library while having the m2ts clips on the timeline, you can replace each clip without upsetting the timeline "template".

There is a Replace Mode in the drop down menu at the right end of the timeline toolbar. Drag mp4 to the same location as m2ts on timeline and it will replace that clip.

You can then use the Slip feature to get your exact in point by sliding a "ghosted" clip back an forth until you are happy.

You can watch THIS to get an idea of what I am talking about once you have "replaced" your clip on the timeline.

Many thanks for your advice and referring to the new features of Studio 22.

I tested the new replacement editing mode and it works fine. It replaces the .m2ts clip with the stabilized .mp4 clip on the same position with the same duration time, that what I wanted to do. With the new SLIP function the start frame in the clip can be changed. This also works fine, but this method is feasible only if the start point is equal the clip start or the end point is equal the clip end. Unfortunately Studio does not show the start frame number or the trimmed start position within original clip.

     Are there further recommendations?
