Hi Guys Just jumped from 12 to 19 ultimate. Now my problem is I have tried to capture video from a JVC vhs/dv recorder via firewire which works in Nero and studio 12 on another PC, but when I try in studio it reconises the dv device but says "failed to get video from device " Anyone out there any ideas. Duncan

Re: Capture using Firewire
What computer, operating system and Firewire port/card are you using? For Windows 8 / 8.1 / 10, if the Firewire port card is IEEE1394b capable (so can run at higer speeds up to 800MHz), a "legacy" driver that supports older Firewire devices running at lower speeds (100/200/400MHz) is not included as part of Windows - this can affect devices such as Firewire hard drives and DV cameras. But Microsoft did release a driver installer for Windows 8/8.1 - and from what I have read it is also usable on Windows 10. The Microsoft knowledge base article (with links to the download for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows is here HTH Richard

Re: Capture using Firewire
Try Captureflux to see if is able to capture from your JVC cam. That would eliminate the possible drivers issue.

Re: Capture using Firewire
Thanks again for your help Richard. However tried what you suggested but no change, as I said it will capture into Nero no problem, however it is a new firewire card and Iam going to try and add a seperate power supply to the card as its just running off the motherboard at the moment. Have to get an adapter tomorrow so will let you know how I get on. Thanks again. Duncan

Re: Capture using Firewire
Hi Richard Here are the details of my system you asked about, Dell XPS8900 i7 processor 2tb hard drive 16gb ram windows 10pro, Firewire card CSL IEEE1394 as far as I can see is not 800MHZ. The jvc recorder shows up devices and also in device manager, it will also record using Nero Video with no problem. It does show in Studio as a DV device but will not capture video.SO Im stuck with what else to try. I could use a work round by capturing in Nero then bring the file into studio for editing but not ideal after purchasing the software. Duncan

Re: Capture using Firewire
I had assumed from your original posting that both Nero and Studio 12 were running on the other PC... So I would suggest trying another generic capture tool as mentioned by Saby (if the generic tool works that would eliminate issues due to the Windows driver (Nero might have its own driver and not use the Windows one...) - his recommendation was CaptureFlux; another older tool you could try is WinDV (both are free for personal use). And I am sure that there are many others...
You should not need to connect a power supply to the card; that is intended for devices that can be powered through the Firewire cable. And there is a risk that you could damage devices that don't need that power supply (depending upon which pins are wired in your Firewire cable)!
Regards, Richard

Re: Capture using Firewire
Thanks Richard Just tried Captueflux and it worked fine captured a short clip and impoted into studio no problem. So there is not a problem with the drivers or the card it seems a Studio issue. As I said studio reconises the dv device but won't capture the video. My web cam shows and capture video fine in studio so Im stuck as to what to next. regards Duncan

Now that you have an easy workaround with Captureflux, use it and forget capture Studio's feature.

Re: Capture using Firewire
Thanks for the advice that seems the best solution. However Just captured some 30 mins and the captured .avi file plays fine, but when I import it into Studio the audio slows down and is out of sync. Any Ideas One long winded work around was to convert the .avi to mp4 then it imports correct, is it a setting I need to change in Captureflux?

Re: Capture using Firewire
Capture is variable frame rate or constant.

Re: Capture using Firewire
Thanks for the reply. Which do you suggest as being the best for capturing vhs/dv?

Re: Capture using Firewire
Hi Richard & Saby A Really big thank you for your time and effort in trying to help me here. But I now have it all sorted. Can capture into studio fine. All my own fault really, Just tried to capture into another program and could not get the PC to find the recorder, so checked the firewire cable into the card and it had come out putting it back in again I found that due to the plastic cover it wasn't seating into the card far enough so cut off a couple of mm and hey presto it works in studio. So who feels like a plonker then!!!!!! Thanks again for all your time and help. Duncan

Re: Capture using Firewire
Hi Guys This problem has just returned as before, after patching studio to 19.5. Tried down grading back to 19.1 but still have the firewire issue even tried a new cable. Thinking of switching to a usb capture any comments on the Dazzel unit?

For what it's worth if it helps someone with Firewire capture and Windows 10: Installed a SiiG DP FIREWIRE 2-PORT PCIe card in a brand new DELL XPS-8900 with Windows 10 (@ Amazon USD $34). The card is labeled as "Windows 8 Ready". I was able to capture NTSC video from a Canon HV20 with a brand new 1394 cable without any problems; video and audio is in sync and I could successfully do basic editing & fx's. Have not authored a disc yet.
