    rcpilot-ajaxrc:

... Does anyone know if we will have to buy a new smartsound plugin, if we already have one for Studio 16?

No there is no need to buy a new SS plugin.

The SS plugin is linked to the Sonic Fire serial number only.

But you most likely will have to do a repair of your SFP installation in order for the SS button to show up on the toolbar of PS 17.

Yes - proper professional NLEs that probably have to pay a hefty license fee to use the codecs.

Anyway, there isn't anything like that in S17 Sad

no doubt there is a fee -- but I can't imagine that its too onerous, otherwise no one would include it.

I don't recall Premier or Vegas announcing a price hike because they had begun to include ProRes. (FCPX is owned by Apple which presumably originated ProRes).

But even supposing it cost $20-50/license -- making that an upgrade option for Ultimate users would have made enormous sense, expanding PS17's potential market.

just checked the Atomos Ninja 2 website, for which NLEs support ProRes:

Ninja/Samurai Apple ProRes files are compatible with:

for less than the cost of PS17, LightWorks has support for both multicam and ProRes.

These are features that PS17 ought have been included (at least in Ultimate), if they wanted folks to upgrade and to attract a new larger audience of more experienced users -- in addition to the critical important sequential scene play issue discussed earlier:

"... enable library clips that have been divided into "scene" segments, to play sequentially (one "scene" to the next ).

A minor easily done tweak --- but one of gigantic importance to me.   (PS16 only plays one "scene" at a time.  I had considerable dialogue with G-- last year on this issue.  Hopefully it was acted on)."

    DTVPro:

Thanks for that review and for answering the questions in my previous posting. Doesn't seem to be anything I need in there right now, so I will be sticking with PS14U/PS16U for the time being. I might become interested if the title editor got an overhaul (doing long/complex title rolls of more than about 3 pages is PAINFUL and I usually end up using Heroglyph or the PS14 classic title editor).

Re: Studio 17 is now available

    @fidel47, sorry, no multicam.

@BARYE, yes, ProRes is available in those other software programs. Look at the price of them too. And with Adobe... the never ending paying.

As for Lightworks Pro, I have it. Download the free version and try and do something with a sample file.... let me know how things go. It's a powerful editing tool, but now you have the learning curve, and it's not an easy one. Reminds me of when I went from Adobe Premiere to Pinnacle Edition (later Avid Liquid). I had to constantly use the program in order to get comfortable with it coming from Premiere, and before that, DPS Editbay.

As for sequential play of scenes, I never had a need for it, so it was never crucial to me.

Re: Studio 17 is now available

    Hi all,

I have a question regarding v17. Does it finally import and display 5.1 surround files and displays the audio as separate tracks or does it still fold down the surround tracks to plain stereo? I bought v16 Ultimate for this very reason but after the purchase found out that the softeware folds down the surround tracks. So I went back to Sony Vegas which does the job beautfully but I want something I can use when I want to do something quickly and without a lot of fuss.

Until Pinnacle gets the surround issue fixed(if ever!), I'm going to stay with Vegas. But should they actually fix this problem(a deal-breaker for me), I'll buy the ultimate version when it is available.

    Thanks,

     Arthur

you're likely right -- the learning curve is likely steep. And my patience for adjusting to new NLEs is not known to be especially high.

Nevertheless -- LightWorks at least offers the potential for what PS17 ought to have been

I couldn't pass it up. But it is daunting get a grip on it. So, you have this software that will handle ProRes. But then you will spend a long time getting comfortable with it. I will "force" myself to use it, but if I have to do something in the here and now, PS16U to the rescue.

I had basically one day to get this out for the youth group at our church. I had to get some footage and photos that day, and basically get it out for the next day. Lots of Montage, Corrections Editor, Effects Editor, overlays, etc.. I would not have been able to do this with Lightworks. Especially since they have no Montage!!! Wink

    One Life Youth Conference.

Of course, if I had more time, the timing would be better and a few other glitches. But I had hours to get this out.

No, it wasn't. Whoever "G" is, I suspect he doesn't work there any more.

How much effort has gone into the S17 rewrite? It's barely more that a brush up, and they couldn't even get Smart rendering to work on version .0. Yet you are saying they should have the resources to include pro codecs and actually make them work? Big SmileBig SmileBig Smile

Re: Studio 17 is now available

Has there been any improvement to the Pan & Zoom feature in S17 as compared to S16? In S16 it does some really funky motion stuff when a pan/zoom is done with the "smoothing" checkbox marked (adds gradual acceleration and deceleration at the beginning and ending of a pan/zoom). I never have figured that out and just resigned myself that it is an unfortunate bug, but maybe I'm doing something wrong.

    Thanks.

It's the same, but S16 and S17 does preserve 5.1 surround sound in files, it only down chucks it to stereo if you use the pannier to remix it, in this case your 5.1 gets converted to stereo before it gets remixed to your new 5.1 settings.

amazing you pulled that together in only a few hours.

    It looks quite slick.

How much were the montages modified by you ??

Did you take the photographs ??

Re: Studio 17 is now available

    @colour, thank you very much!

@BARYE, yes, it was done in one day. I was a little stressed at the beginning, but once  I look at all the tools that I have, and visualize, I go for it. If I had more time, there would be more refinement, but basically the same as it is now. It had to be ready. I had to be able to test it on the projection screen (with is not in 16:9) to make sure the text fit and everything else. So, one day. The Montage themes (which I rarely use) were just what I needed.

The Montages were not modified except for the motion backgrounds I used. I did modify the images and videos that needed it. Most of the photos were by me. I knew the song so shot for it. There is some stock Google Images in there too. The music was chosen by the person who asked me if I could do it, but she was vague with her ideas for the video. So with her vague ideas, I came with my cameras and took a lot of photos and video, went home and hit the keyboard.

At the the youth conference, they loved it, and that basically was all the mattered to me.  I had to tell the story of the song which is in English to a Polish audience with images and video.

I have to say, Pinnacle Studio was rock stable for me. I use keyboard shortcuts and don't wait for rendering. I don't sit still and neither did the editor. One crash at the very beginning with the Titler. After that, none. The program kept up with my "I don't have much time" editing.

Where are "over 2000 2D/3D additional effects"?

Good question. I've flagged this up in the past, because .MFX is shown in the quick Import file types dialogue of S16. It's still there in S17, so either they have implemented it, or ignored me. Of corse it will depend what is in the MFX wrapper. Can you upload a sample and I will test it?

The File menu of PS17 contains an entry to import projects made with previous Studio versions.

Be aware that depending on the complexity of  the pré-17 project and the effects/content used in it, import result might not be 100% succesfull.

So use a copy to see if the result meets your expectations.

Re: Studio 17 is now available

I purchased the upgrade to Studio 17 Ultimate from Studio 16 Ultimate yesterday and installed it yesterday as well.  I have been trying to successfully export 3D projects consisting of 3D footage shot with my Sony 3D camcorder (MTS files) and/or MPO files from my FujiFilm W3 still camera as folders (AVCHD2 and Blu-Ray) and files.  Neither export will complete.  The completion indicator gets to 100%, but the program hangs and I have to stop the process, and then Studio crashes,  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but it still hangs.  I had no such problems in Studio 16.

    Any ideas?
