Me probably.... I'm downloading an upgrade now (£69,99) and will be writing a review for the www.DTVPro.co.uk website.

The download is in three parts if you buy ultimate.

    Studio_17_content.exe 850Mb – (took about 10 minutes to download)

    Ultimate_bonus_content.exe – 1.7Gb – took about 17 minutes)

PinnacleStudio17_setup.exe – 1.5 Gb should have taken about 15 minutes but has now slowed right down and looks like it might take over 40 mins. This could be loacal internet congestion as that tends to happen around here when people are waking up. or it could be a rush of downloads.

It looks like the "extended downloads" are back 2 years for £5 - I thought we were through that phase.

    More soon...

Re: Studio 17 is now available

maybe I don't understand the spec -- but I'm not seeing the inclusion of DSLR friendly codecs.

And because I'm currently flirting with the idea of getting an Atomos Ninja 2, I in particular really wanted the inclusion of the ProRes format -- as would large numbers of DSLR users.

Re: Studio 17 is now available

My DSLR shoots H 264 MOV. So what your really mean is professional codecs?

But no, they haven't added any codecs as far as I can see, When I have it installed, I'll post back.

Re: Studio 17 is now available

The only cameras to my knowledge that shoot "now" in the consumer price range in ProRes is the BlackMagic ones. All the DSLR's shoot in a format that the PS16 can handle. I don't know of any consumer editing software that handles ProRes. If you want to work with stuff like that, time to move up the NLE ladder.

I'll wait for a report back on the review.

Is there a link for a trial download anywhere?

Re: Studio 17 is now available

Bought the downloadable upgrade version of Ultimate.

Three files need to be downloaded, with links on the webpage.

    • Studio_17_content.exe 850Mb – (took about 8 minutes to download)
    • Ultimate_bonus_content.exe – 1.7Gb – took about 17 minites)
    • PinnacleStudio17_setup.exe – 1.5 Gb should have taken about  15 minutes but slowed right down to end up taking 40 mins.

After a few minutes I received an email with order number, product details and serial number. It seems like the service has reverted to Digital River, and if you want a 2 year extended download available, you have to pay an extra £4.99.
I then installed the files in the above order – the suggested download order. The music cleaning software is a standalone that requires separate authorisation.

When all loaded and registered, the version is shown as 17.0.0 128

I then received a email with my 14 day warranty support code.

Very first impressions is that the interface has been freshened up, but there are no significant functional differences. Can’t see any new file formats, but there is a 1920x1080 50/60p setting for BluRay discs.

I have read a lot of forum posts by producers of DSLR video that swear by ProRes -- who even if their original is not ProRes, will very often upconvert to that format.

They're editing using NLEs like FCPX; Sony Vegas; and Adobe Premier.  Maybe there are others as well.

But ProRes is a critical format for serious DSLR creatives -- and its the primary format of the Ninja 2 (which is one of the reasons its such a popular device amongst those users).

Yes - proper professional NLEs that probably have to pay a hefty license fee to use the codecs.

Anyway, there isn't anything like that in S17 Sad

Re: Studio 17 is now available

One of the main explanations given in the past for why Avid would not provide certain functions or codecs, was that they didn't want to compete with their own pro-level products.

That justification no longer applies with Corel -- PS17 could easily have been upgraded to a more serious codec functionality and expanded its market opportunities at little additional expense.

    KEWL - - I'll download  / install mine when I get home.

I was tired of the DVD authoring problems with my Studio version - hope this is OK in 17, and the library allows me to access my server.

    Please note:

According the comparison chart, Blu-Ray authoring is available in the Ultimate version only!!

I was really hoping this version would provide better GPU acceleration for AMD cards.  OpenCL??  Any idea when we'll see improved AMD GPU support?

Re: Studio 17 is now available

WeeWee will be disappointed - the PS17 Ultimate retail box version (according to box shot and information on Amazon) does not appear to contain a green sheet Wink

    Some "more serious" questions:

    • Advertised 10x increase in rendering speed for H.264 projects - compared with what?
    • Which older Studio versions qualify for the upgrade version?
    • Does the download use that peer-assisted download software (PMB) that hangs around in your PC after the download without so much as the courtesy to ask whether you actually want to make your downloaded files (and network bandwidth) available to others?
    • Can PS17 open projects created by older versions of Studio - PS16 - Avid Studio - PS15 and older without scrambling them
    • Do Pinnacle-supplied "Ultimate" and "Ultimate Collection" plugins (+ 3rd party ones) from earlier versions of Studio (that did work with PS16 still work in PS17?
    • Can the Library on a PC currently running Avid Studio or PS16U be migrated/imported into one running PS17U?
    • Can PS17U author DVDs having more than 99 chapters in total (Avid Studio and PS16 cannot, older versions (10/11/12/14/15) can)?
    • Can it do synchronised editing with footage from several cameras ("multicam")?

If a trial-version is made available I may well give it a try to maybe find my own answers...

    Regards,
    Richard

    excellent question.

    PS17 has 3d.

    Wonderful support for 3d...

    Did I mention that PS17 supports 3d ??

horrifically, our beloved classic PS15 UI -- and many of its functionalities -- was stolen from us and drowned in a salty pool of BARYE's tears more than a year ago -- when Avid "disposed" of it like an unloved child.

But BARYE is not bitter ...

    Some "more serious" questions:

Than if you selected the MP4 option rather than Smart.
  • Which older Studio versions qualify for the upgrade version?
  • Same as before probably - 9 and upwards. In fact, it doesn't look like I needed to enter an old serial number, but that could be because I have old registrations hanging around in the Pixie folder.

  • Does the download use that peer-assisted download software (PMB) that hangs around in your PC after the download without so much as the courtesy to ask whether you actually want to make your downloaded files (and network bandwidth) available to others?
  • ]I bought the full download version and can't actually find a trace of it on my machine - probably because I had all the files. However, that's not to say you won't get it by downloading the trial or running the install disc. But you can just uninstall it, can't you?
  • Can PS17 open projects created by older versions of Studio - PS16 - Avid Studio - PS15 and older without scrambling them
  • I've tested some complex S16 projects which all seem OK.

  • Do Pinnacle-supplied "Ultimate" and "Ultimate Collection" plugins (+ 3rd party ones) from earlier versions of Studio (that did work with PS16 still work in PS17?
  • There seems so little different about S17 that I'd be very surprised if they don't, but I can be sure

  • Can the Library on a PC currently running Avid Studio or PS16U be migrated/imported into one running PS17U?
  • If you install S17 over S16 it will automatically use the S16 Library. So the format should be the same.

  • Can PS17U author DVDs having more than 99 chapters in total (Avid Studio and PS16 cannot, older versions (10/11/12/14/15) can)?
  • The entire disc menu authoring system looks identical to S16, it doesn't look like they have done anything new there

  • Can it do synchronised editing with footage from several cameras ("multicam")?
  • NoMy review is here http://www.pinnaclestudio.info/page2

I was also looking forward to version 17, but will wait a bit and see what happens.  Not enough new things for an upgrade right now since I'm a casual user.

Does anyone know if we will have to buy a new smartsound plugin, if we already have one for Studio 16?

no doubt there is a fee -- but I can't imagine that its too onerous, otherwise no one would include it.

I don't recall Premier or Vegas announcing a price hike because they had begun to include ProRes. (FCPX is owned by Apple which presumably originated ProRes).

But even supposing it cost $20-50/license -- making that an upgrade option for Ultimate users would have made enormous sense, expanding PS17's potential market.
