Re: Features That You Would Like New or Old to be in the NEW NLE
Maybe I am mistaken, so please forgive me, but the VOB import is doable.... I tried to import the other day, and it wouldn't work, so I opened the folder then went back to Liquid, then alt-tabbed back to the folder and dragged the VOB file straight into my bin. Worked perfectly. The sound followed and was perfectly in sync. I edited the short piece, then burned it back to DVD. It looked as good as the original piece and was a breeze to work with. as i said, maybe I am mistaken (I read Sverkalo's post on fixing VOB import).

Re: Features That You Would Like New or Old to be in the NEW NLE
Out of curiosity, Mark, what audio format did your VOB have? I suspect that depending upon audio format (and perhaps some other factors) this may or may not work - having said that, I'm itching to try your drag & drop approach....
Cheers

-BOB with HDMI in/out(a must)
-Coming USB 3.0 compliant.
-Automatic media split function during conversion into web formats from the timeline, either by file size or file duration.A very handy function ( i do a lot of export to youtube) that will save me the headche of having to repeatedly mark in/out the portions i need exported.
-MPEG 1 import cap.

Re: Features-Bezier Curve Garbage Mattes
I use bezier curve masks with and without soft edges a lot. It would be nice not to have to exit Liquid each time. Especially when they aren't overly complicated masks.

Re: Features-Bezier Curve Garbage Mattes
Does that mean you're using an external program for your bezier curve garbage mattes ... if so, which? I'd like to use them - and it would definitely be good to have mattes - with interpolation - within Liquid (plus a few other compositing tools)

Re: Features-Bezier Curve Garbage Mattes
On the PC side I use After Effects to create curved masks. Basically the same controls as photoshop. At work I'm in a Mac environment. There are some free bezier curve filters for FCP (50pt. matte filter) as well as filters that can be purchased. It's just nice to continue working in the actual editing program. (Motion has bezier curves as well.) Once I reach a certain level of layers it makes sense to leave the application, but for 4 or 5 layers and less I would just as soon stay in the editing app. Quicker to make adjustments, especially since AFX is a tad awkward with audio, at least with the way my brain works.

Re: Features-Bezier Curve Garbage Mattes
I had a feeling it would be AFx. I have it, but find it too clunky to use 'quickly' - perhaps because i don;t use it often enough so it doesn't come easy.
Oh well. Lets hope it all becomes a part of the new Liquid.

Re: Features-Bezier Curve Garbage Mattes
Steve,
The DVD was given to me, so I was not the author...that said, when I check the clip properties in Liquid, it lists the audio as PCM. Maybe I just got lucky ?? It was my first experience with importing a VOB file....it really was a painless operation. I tried first to import the file, but the file wouldn't even show up in the import dialog box....that is when I decided to try the drag and drop.
Hope this helps

Re: Features-Bezier Curve Garbage Mattes
I also use After Effects for any masking work. Once you get used to the bezier tools in AE, you will never look back. Another nice feature is the ability to feather and contract or expand the masks....I have to say though, I am known to be somewhat of an AE junkie...pretty much all of my compositing work, including keying gets done in AE...I have some chroma key work in Liquid. The tools are good, but keylight, the keyer that ships with AE is unbelievable.
Regards
Mark

Re: Features-Bezier Curve Garbage Mattes
Thanks, Mark - PCM... that should make things easier - I think most people historically had problems with AC3 audio - but that was because they needed to install an AC3 audio decoder filter... something along those lines, anyway.
Cheers

Export to file in the background
Export can take for ever - and I can't use LE in the mean time - if you can render in the background why can't you export in the background ?

I want that, too, and i have already requested for it.Export rendering via the GPU will not only be much much faster(GPUs are more powerful than CPUs),but also in the background, freeing the CPU for other tasks.

Re: Features That You Would Like New or Old to be in the NEW NLE
What I really want? HDV playback from the time-line to Firewire. My camcorder will pass it through to its Component output. No need for a BOB then. With "graceful" degradation if the load is too high, of course ;-) I don't mind if there's a short delay, so long as audio and video are always in synch.
dun4cheap wants "Undockable Source and Preview Windows that are resizable as well. (Keeping Correct Aspects though)"
- only if it is in addition to the current interface, which I find intuitive and very well-thought-out. I also use Adobe Audition, and I get in a horrible muddle when trying to make the UI fit what I want to do. Never had that problem with LE nor AL.
"Subtitle and Multiple Audio muxing for DVD/HD/BR export."
- Yes please! I use DVD Lab Pro for alternative audio tracks at the moment. Would be nice to have them on the Liquid timeline. Actually, maybe an "integrated but separate" DVD Authoring program would be better for the more complex things, such as alternate audio, sub-titles, mixing 4:3 and 16:9 material. Keep authoring from the time-line for the basics, though - and add High Def output formats, too.
I have spent quite a lot of time and effort getting a simple, distinctive styles for titles, graphics, etc. I need to be able to import my existing styles into any new program. This was possible (though not straight forward) when I moved from LE5.62 to AL7.2. I'd like it to be much easier next time I upgrade.
On a related, subject, here's a challenge: What can Pinnacle do to help give my DVD menus, in-programme graphics, printed sleeve/label and web-page graphics a common look and feel? At the moment, unless I stick to very simple text, with no shading, outlines, face effects, etc. they all look like they have come from different applications - which, at the moment, they have. Does Pinnacle mind if I have to import graphics and titles from a 3rd-party app. to get this consistency?

Real Media Manager; Capture Applet
1. A Real Media Manager is needed -- a "Liquid Explorer" if you will. Move, rename, consolidate, delete, reorganize, package up and ftp, and pretty much any thing else we want to do to Manage Our Media. (Yea, we all could use a good MOM from time-to-time.)
The back end of Liquid is a data base. Give us a Liquid Explorer into that data base --and-- windows files. If you rename a file, Bam! all the data base dependencies are updated. If you rename a reel, Bam! the data base is updated. "Lost" some media? Find it fast by name, date, etc. or use the built-in clip viewer. When you find it, drag it to the project or folder it belongs and --you guessed it-- Bam! the data base is updated. Basically, it is Our media and we should be able to manage it as we need. It is Liquid's job to over see our efforts, warn us if there might be any unanticipated side effects, and prevent us from causing harm. Otherwise, get out of our way.
2. A stand alone Free-for-everyone logging tool. Capturing is in real time. 10 hours of footage ties up a computer for 10 hours. Let us capture on multiple slower, older computers in the studio. Let the capture drive be networkable. Better yet, how about letting (certain) clients do the capturing at their office and we'll edit in ours. If everyone can capture for free and the output file(s) can be used by Liquid and/or Studio, Bam! you've got a whole bunch of new customers buying Liquid or Studio. And if you really want to get press coverage and broad popularity, include an incredibly easy and fool-proof "Capture to YouTube". --Well, that's the start of my list.

Great idea! And make sure that the capture program can split the input into clips as it comes in, either by meta-data or by scene detection. Scenalyzer can do it, why can't Liquid? At the moment, it takes 150% of the footage time to create separate clips, even on a new, fast PC. Also, fix the current problem that means that some scene splits in HDV footage are missed even when using meta-data. Ideally, I'd like a fast tape-scan / index function like Scenalyzer, too. Maybe Pinnacle should invest in Scenalyzer and comission them to write the logging tool for Liquid NextGen?

Re: Real Media Manager; Capture Applet
The ingest tool can capture in the background while you edit. So you have some of this ability already. There is also another tool HDVsplit which can capture HDV and do scene detection for free. I do agree it would be usefull to have a separate module of liquid that can capture. This would come in handy so you can capture using multiple computers, or like my shoot over the weekend where I had 3 cameras, two I recorded to tape and the 3rd I captured directly to a computer.
But like I said the ingest tool allows you capture in the background while editing. The only downfall is for some reason captures using this method will not work in multicam sync.

Re: Features That You Would Like New or Old to be in the NEW NLE
Multi-Media: Another example is when I was asked to proudce a radio spot. I went to the output section and there was no longer an option to make just a WAV file... I had to make a video and then save the audio separately as a work around to what was available before...
In AL7, you need to choose Export to AVI, then, you have an "Audio" folder with the "WAV File" preset.

I think Motion Tracking was mentioned earlier though not as Motion Tracking. Sony Vegas has it. It is very useful when putting a picture into a motion background.
