Who will drop Avid Studio, Poll

Who will drop Avid Studio if you have to pay for an upgrade?

    According to this LINK:  http://estore.pinnaclesys.com/store/avidtech/pd/productID.225070600?resid=Tq-0-QoHAtYAAGt9ih4AAAAJ&rests=1320154365028

Avid will be selling an upgrade to version 1.1 and there is no word of a patch for us Studio users, are Avid doing it to us users again just like they did when we were using Pinnacle Studio 14, no patch updates?

Come on you Studio users get voting and let's get Avid to give us some answers as to if they will give us a free upgrade or NOT.

Me personally I will drop Avid Studio like a stone and will go find a NLE that really works for what I paid for.

Well after reading the forum and all of the issues I am not even going to make the switch, so that solves that problem.

I will just keep plunking along with S14 Or 15 for my quick and dirty work.

I could be missing something here as English is not my mother tong, but I can't find any word on an upgrade to version 1.1 on that linked page.

Isn't version 1.1 the latest one and already available now?

I might perhaps try a Babelfish translation from English to Dutch to make things clearer to me.  Embarrassed  Embarrassed

You are correct that version 1.1 is the current version available.

    System Requirements:

You must be a registered user of Pinnacle Studio 9 or higher, Liquid Edition v.6, or Avid Liquid 7, in order to install this upgrade. Compatible with all Studio versions 12,14, and 15 (no Avid Liquid projects)

IOW what they are selling is an upgrade path to get users from older/other versions onto AS

it's called an upgrade for one reason...  you get a reduced price because you already own one of their products as listed. it's really the full version but in order to get the upgrade price you have to " i say again" own one of the products. you also have to provide a key code for the product you already own while doing the install. i just got it two weeks ago and it is ver. 1.1

Re: Who will drop Avid Studio, Poll

While many of the probelms reported are from user error (RTFM!!!), there are still a significant number of bugs; many more than you would expect in even a version 1. Pinnacle came out with a patch called v1.1 and it fixed many bugs and added others. Also, some bugs only appear when using certain features or plugins or occur rnadomly. These have all been documented in these forums. Some are difficult to reproduce and it takes time to discover the "recipe". If your use is "light" it is a very useable program; just don't expect all the feature to work as advertised all the time.

That is why, we the users, are demanding that Pinnacle(AVID) release an update and not an upgrade. We are not looking for new features as much as we are wanting the features we paid for to work properly! If they issue an upgrade instead of an update, then I will drop AS permanently. In he past, Pinnacle has issued patches to fix things, added new features, and made you pay for the fixes. They add the features to justify charging you for an Upgrade.

    No way, No how!

The other possibility, given that the very same estore page had been fouled up a few days earlier - is that it was restored from an old backup and the information that is now on display is the old information from last year, just before AS was launched!

So until I see something else to confirm, I am going to assume that it's a cack-handed repair of the website and not an announcement of an impending new product upgrade

Appears to only be a marketing rehash offering Avid Studio to PStudio or Old Liquid licence owners...not likely to be a new AS version. US Thanksgiving sales push period...

Most bugs are not from user error. Matter of fact in the DVD authoring realm, alot of the problems are problems that were existant in Liquid 7.2. While many of us were told that there would be another patch to resolve the remaining authoring issues, this never happened and it appears that these same bugs have now found themselves in Avid Studio.

     examples:

    1. Menus do not function properly if you put a video before the menus. There is a thread with a user stating that their menus appear however you can navigate the buttons. Chances are this is the intro bug.

    2. The navigation of buttons fail or they do not function as one in intended. Pushing up skips two button, pushing down skips two buttons etc. Atleast with Liquid you can map the navigation, but you needed to do this every time you entered the editor for that menu.

I have also noticed problems when saving a project. It looks like it does not retain all of the surround sound edits. One of my tracks keeps forgetting that it is the rear right channel.

This is just another sad Avid/Pinnacle story. One of many..

So who are you to demand that other users with older versions are not allowed to upgrade via this route (from an older pre AS version) to AS?

Where did anybody say anything about no further UPDATES to the current AS version anyway?

I will not buy an upgrade, as I see cannot see a reason why this upgrade would improve the current version 1.1. An update will describe what the fixes are, and we all agree that 1.1 needs an second upgrade.

That said, as more and more AVCHD seems to become the standard for video recording and AVID does not really handle that format very well, i.e very time consuming proces, I will be looking for other software that is designed on a 64 bit operating system.

This is a shame as initially I had a lot of video shot with my Canon HV20 and that was processde  very fast, but I seem to use my still camera more and more for HD video recording. My final product is all in HD 1080.

I wonder what the disc version is now.

    It becomes ever more confusing.

Can we stick to a definition that going from v1.0....v1.1....v1.2 etc  (ie within the same version) is an update or patch, and that going from previous software/ versions (ie v1 to v2) is an upgrade.

Re: Who will drop Avid Studio, Poll

I don't know. I think Avid handles AVCHD just about as well as others. I edit solely AVCHD and video from my Canon EOS DSLR and have not experienced issues. Some might render faster, others slower. What really helps is having a computer that is fast. It is still going to be a time consuming process. That is the nature of AVCHD. Anything can edit the HV20 video without a problem. You don't need a super fast computer to do it either. But AVCHD is a horse from another planet. Here is a VIDEO from a Sony Vegas Pro 64bit user reviewing Avid Studio. At about the 8 minute mark, he talks about editing AVCHD and even gives numbers comparing samples rendered with Vegas Pro 10 64bit with nVidia CUDA enabled vs Avid Studio. Interesting to say the least.

I am curious (because I do not know) how often does Adobe, Sony,  anyone else come out with patches, and how many patches before an upgrade to a new version.

Avid Studio 1.1 is a part of my life and it should remain so.  Broken Heart

The way I understand the Avid advertising, it is an upgrade from Pinnacle Studio to Avid Studio 1.1. Since nothing is written about AS 2.0 or so. Sleep

Still using AS1.1. While I have Studio15UC and 14U on my computer (as well as VSP X4), I still fall back to Avid Studio to do any editing. Issues, yes. Issues with just  about every piece of software I own, but it doesn't stop me from using it (who has given up Windows yet?).

I asked in an earlier post does anyone know how many updates with other NLE's before an upgrade. How often are these done. And in the other forums, are there problems posted and are people leaving because of it.

Would I like the bugs fixed? Of course. I would have liked that there be none in the first place.

I'll wait and see what happens. I have time and $$$ invested and am not ready to toss it out just yet.

Re: Who will drop Avid Studio, Poll

I'm using AS1.1 for standard "low tech" projects.

For more sophisticated projects with 5.1 surround sound I bought (and use) a competitor's NLE.

I had a trial&error period for some weeks testing different NLE products. Finally I bought the "less worse" product which fulfills my requirements.

BTW, don't ask which product, I will not answer this question Devil

    Tony,

I have been doing research on several NLE's, and i can answer one of your questions. Of the other 5 leading NLE's, for past and current versions, they have issued 2-6 fixes on average. I know some people will say, that means more problems. No, I don't see that, by visiting forums.

Yes, they all have problems with new versions, with none any worst than others. That is really not the issue.  But the BIG difference that i see, and the main reason why I am looking elsewhere is customer support. The issuing of only 1 patch (AS1.1) or no patches (as in PS14-PS15), makes it VERY CLEAR what Avid thinks of its customers. When left with no signs of hope for improvement, most customers will look elsewhere, for any type of product. Their history will reflect there future. Why should you even expect another patch. Other NLE's clearly support their product better.
