Canon XHA1 Capture HD problem Studio 12.1 Ultimate
Capture problems.
I can not Capture/import videofiles from my camcorder. Camcorder Canon XH A1 The camcorder is set up to record HV Video in format 1920 x 1080, 50i I import trough FW 1394
When I want to capture, the camcorder starts normally, but I cant see anything beeing imported.
When I go to EDIT I am getting this error message:
The video file C/user/gunnar/horpestad/videos/testing 2008.m2v could not be opened.
When I open the settings for the Capture, I can not change anything in the CAPTURE FORMAT, Presets. The only thing I can see is MPEG-1/2 and HDV 2. I can not change these settings.
Studio detect my camcorder. No problem.
I run Windows Vista 64 bit on my computer. All drivers are up to date. Ram, graphic-card etc is fare over required to run studio.
I have used this week-end to do a lot of tests, but the result is the same. I can ot capture HD. All other format is working ok (SD 16:9 and 4:3)(50i or 25F). No problem at all.
The problem I am having must be very well known problem for Pinnale. I you take a look at Pinnacle Forum, you will see that this is a problem many many people have. As fare as I can see it, I do not think that anyone can import HD video from a camcorder that are using HD dv-tapes. Is that so or... ???
The ting is. If you read the spesifications for Studio it says:
Quote Capture Options o Capture from DV, HDV and Digital8 camcorders or VCRs (requires a FireWire® port) Quote end.
There must be a solution to this problem.
Thanks for answers

Re: Canon XHA1 Capture HD problem Studio 12.1 Ultimate
I can't help you with your problem. I can say this, though: The camcorder is set up to record HV Video in format 1920 x 1080, 50i
HDV video is 1440x1080. Your camcorder may electronically support 1920x1080, but it only is able to record at 1440x1080 on tape.

Re: Canon XHA1 Capture HD problem Studio 12.1 Ultimate
HI
This is the last answer (see quoted text below) I got from Pinnacle support.
The answer is just B.S. and it looks like Pinnacle support have no idea about this problem.
The procedure given by Pinnacle (item 1 to 10) does not work at all.
Is it only me that have these capture problems or ?????
I record in HD (1440 x 1080) and I want to capture in HD (as Studio 12 Ultimate advertisement say), and I want to burn to HD and or Bluray.
I think I soon will give up.
HD and Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate does not work together at all.
QUOTE
Hi ,
Thank you for contacting Pinnacle Support.
Here is the procedure on how to capture your HD videos from the Canon camcorder and Studio.
1. Connect the Camcorder to the 1394 port of your computer using the Firewire Cable. 2. Wait till the computer detects the Camcorder. 3. Open Studio. 4. Go to Capture. 5. Click Setup > Capture Source. 6. Under Video Source select your HDV Canon XH A1. Do the same for the Audio Source. 7. Now go to Capture Format and select DV. 8. Click Ok. 9. Play the video on the camcorder. 10. If you see the preview of the video on the Studio you can Start recording using by clicking the Start Capture button.
*Note: After you have captured the videos, you must go to edit and drag the captured Videos on the Timeline before going to the Make Movie. Then to burn them on HD use AVCHD or Blu Ray on the Disc Type under Make Disc Settings.
The following features are available in Studio Plus & Ultimate Version 12 · AVCHD capabilities -AVCHD format enables more high resolution content in a smaller file size. Studio will import and edit AVCHD format files. · Blu-Ray disk burning. (with Blu-ray burner)
Let me know if you have additional questions by replying to this email.
Regards,
Bryan D. Pinnacle Support

Re: Canon XHA1 Capture HD problem Studio 12.1 Ultimate
HI My camsorder is Canon XH A1. I record in HD (1440 x 1080) 25f or 50i. I start Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate. Then I start Capture. Studio recognize my camcorder in the capture source,no problem. Then I open settings and select the correct settings (1440 x 1080) in the project prefereces. After that I start capture. The camcorder start and thats it. There are no preview during capture and none of the scenes to be seen beeing captured. After capture I puch the Edit mode and than I am getting the error message: The video file C/user/gunnar/horpestad/videos/testing 2008.m2v could not be opened.
As you understand I can not save the m2v because there is noting to save.
I run Vista 64 bits
In the capture format I can not change anything.
My Studio is updated to 12.1.3
All drivers has been updated.
Thanks for answer

Re: Canon XHA1 Capture HD problem Studio 12.1 Ultimate
Hi
You are not alone with your problem, I have bought a new HP Notebook ( the same model as yours) and a Canon HV 30 in december and get the same problem and error with capture via Firewire (1394) transfer of the file type .m2v.
I can add :
All is functional on my old PC DELL Windows XP
If I copies videofiles .m2v from my old computer to a folder on the new HP Vista Home Preminum 64 bit, Pinnacle Studie 12.1.3 Ultimate, everything works fine and I have been able to edit and burn projects to HDDVD disc - perfectly.
So I don´t think the problem is related to Pinnacle Studie 12.
(Same problem in Windows Movie Maker)
If I switch to Std. DV format the capture also works.
HP and Canon support have not given me any solution - but suggested to look for new drivers and codecs - but all is updated and I dont like to make any experiments with codec packs on a quite new PC.
In the Store where I bought my HV 30, they have shown me a demo that worked - Firewire capture from HV 30 to a ASUS Notebook Vista Ultimate 32 bit. - but don´t know why it worked.
Hope for new advices
Best Regards

Re: Canon XHA1 Capture HD problem Studio 12.1 Ultimate
Hi
Here is the last answer I got from Pinnacle support.
I will try this and give you feedback when its done.
Quote email
Hello Gunner,
We will do uninstall and reinstall to single out software corruption. Refer to Section 2 here:
http://pinnacle.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/pinnacle.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=17694&p_created=1212003638
When using Regdelete in Step 4, do that twice. On the first try, use all products and then User activation and registration data on the second one.
Let me know what happened after reinstalling.
Also, can you give me a 3 MB sample of the captured video?
Regards,
Marco Pinnacle Support

Uninstall / Reinstall Instructions for Studio 12
This FAQ will guide you through an uninstall and reinstall of the Pinnacle Studio 12 software. There are three sections. Section 1 should cover most uninstall and reinstall needs. Section 2 covers some problems the basic uninstall does not. Section 3 has instructions on how to do an install using safe mode for cases where the software install is being problematic.
Section 1: Basic Uninstall and Reinstall Steps
- Go to Start > Control Panel
- In Windows XP click on Add or Remove Programs. In Windows Vista click on Programs > Uninstall a program.
- Select Studio 12 and click the Remove button (Windows XP), or the Uninstall button (Windows Vista). Follow any on-screen instructions to remove the software.
- If you have an install disc: Insert your Studio 12 disc into the DVD drive. The DVD should auto-launch. If it does not, use Windows Explorer to browse to the DVD. Look In the Setup folder, click on the setup.exe file to begin the installation of Studio 12.
- If you have a download version : If you have a download version of Studio 12, start the installation of the Studio software by locating the Downloads folder that was created in the download, open it, and double click on the Pinnacle_Studio_v12_Setup.part1.exe file to begin the install.
-
Install the latest patch.
Click here to download the latest update for Studio 12
Section 2: Advanced Uninstall and Reinstall Steps
If the above steps fail, or you have the same problem in Studio Version 11 after the uninstall and reinstall procedure, try the following steps:
- Go to Start > Control Panel
- In Windows XP click on Add or Remove Programs. In Windows Vista click on Programs > Uninstall a program.
- Select Studio 12 and click the Remove button (Windows XP), or the Uninstall button (Windows Vista). Follow any on-screen instructions to remove the software.
- Download and run Regdelete. For now there is not a version of Regdelete specifically for Studio 12. If you are having unlock/activation, or serial number issues, specifically select User activation and registration data from the pull-down list. This will clear activation and serial number information from the registry. Note: Only select User activation and registration data if you are having activation or serial number problems.
- Delete the Studio 12 folder. By default the location for this is C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Studio 12. Note: This folder may or may not be present depending on what contents were installed.
- Perform a Windows search for Pixie. If it finds a Pixie folder, make a copy of it, and then delete it.
- If you have an install disc: Insert your Studio 12 disc into the DVD drive. The DVD should auto-launch. If it does not, use Windows Explorer to browse to the DVD. Look In the Setup folder, click on the setup.exe file to begin the installation of Studio 12.
- If you have a download version: If you have a download version of Studio 12, start the installation of the Studio software by locating the Downloads folder that was created in the download, open it, and double click on the Pinnacle_Studio_v12_Setup.part1.exe file to begin the install.
-
Install the latest patch.
Click here to download the latest update for Studio 12
Section 3 - Installation trouble
Use this section if you are having problems installing.
- Put the Studio 12 disc in the DVD-ROM drive. Close the auto install window.
- Double click on my computer.
- Right click on the Drive the Studio 12 DVD is in, and choose explore.
- In the window showing the content of the disc, go to edit > select all.
- Create a folder on your desktop called Studio. Paste the contents of the DVD to this folder.
- Boot into Safe mode. To do this, shut down the computer. When you turn it back on, tap the F8 key continuously until a menu pops up. Choose safe mode.
- Open the Studio folder you created on the desktop.
- Open the Setup folder.
- Double-click the setup Icon and follow the on-screen prompts to install Studio 12.

Re: Canon XHA1 Capture HD problem Studio 12.1 Ultimate
Hi Marc
No, I have not tried it out yet.
The ting is that if Pinnacle can't help you, or they are running out of answers, they ALWAYS ask people to uninstall and reinstall the program(s).
The other ting is that i am at work in China at the moment, and I do not have all the software with me for re-installation, but I did somthing else.
I installed Studio on my "old" laptop, a HP Compaq 6515b, that has XP Pro. installed. And the result????
!!! No HD-Capture problem at all !!!
Everything is working perfect.
I have also contacted HP support to see if they have any idea about what and where the problem is.
Is it my laptop, is it pinnacle or is it the damned Vista (again) ???
Maby I should downgrade to XP Pro
I will keep you updated
See ya

Re: Canon XHA1 Capture HD problem Studio 12.1 Ultimate
Hi Marc and Gunnar
Now I have tried Section 2: Advanced Uninstall and Reinstall step by step as decribed from Pinnacle (Marc).
Sorry to say, my problem remains - at least I got the program up running again and my Projects is saved
A comment to the procedure :
When you run the Regdelete, you get a promt to choose between "Delete Pinnacle Video driver or all Video drivers installed"
I selected "Pinacle Video driver" only.
Another point :
When you delete the folder Studio 12 - a folder Studie 12 Plugins remains, but I deleted that too.
I also have made a request at Pinnacle Technical Support #090125-000433
Got the answer :
"There are no known issues with this, but I must say I had a few people complain about it, in most cases it turned out the camera was set wrong, however, we are testing this to see if we can reproduce this issue.
Please keep an eye on our FAQ and keep an eye out for possible updates."
So now where I/we have a rather expensive HP Notebook and a Canon camcorder who can´t cooperate inspite that I/we know that Pinnacle Studie 12 can handle and edit the files (.m2v)
but can´t make a Capture - please inform your Pinnacle develop department - they may have a posibility to get usefull information from HP or Canon - which I obvious can´t.
So still - Vista Home Premium 64bit / HP related or Studie 12 ?
Regards

Hi
It looks like Pinnacle having problem solving thi task.
Here is tha last answer I got from Pinnacle support.

Quote
Hello Gunnar,
I understand that Studio is compatible on Vista but also consider the fact that even Windows Movie Maker which is a Microsoft application has issue capturing from your HD camcorder. This seems to be a compatibility issue of the camcorder working on Vista machine but let us further investigate the problem. Regards,
Sam Pinnacle Support

Are you able to capture in HDV using Windows Movie Maker?

Windows movie maker doesn't work either. The preview screen is blank and the counter stays at 00:00:00 so it doesn't look like its working. It does seem to recognize that its a HD camcoder though.

Re: Canon XHA1 Capture HD problem Studio 12.1 Ultimate
I can't vouch for Vista compatability, but there is no issues with Canon XHA1 or HV20 and Studio Ultimate 12 and importing in HD to a PC running Windows XP Professional (32 bit), I have had no problems with both these camcorders.
