I'm shopping for a laptop. The company owned Dell Vostro 1400 I'm using now has been running LE 7.1 fine, with the graphics card in the spec list at bottom. Interestingly this is a Directx10 card, which according to an earlier post I read, shouldn''t be working.

I'm now looking at the Vostro 1500 (bigger screen that can display high def) which uses the Nvideo 8600GT 256 mb, a newer and also DirectX10 card.  Following are the specs for this model. Does this look like a good choice? BTW I haven't yet upgraded from LE 7.1 to 7.2

I meant to write that I would get it with XP Pro installed. I know that Vista is not supported...

Can someone please tell me if the ATI X 1950 Pro card will work with Liquid 7.2?

I see at the top of this thread that the ATI X 1950 card works ... I'm not sure if the 1950 Pro card is the same? And will it work?

I'm concidering adding Liquid to my arsinal, but am concerned about my system compatability (see sig).

Adrian.  Dittos on the 1950.  Works fine with dual monitors too!  My liquid timeline is spread across 2 19" monitors and I love the extra real estate.

Doug.  I saw nothing in your system that would cause incompatibility--including having Studio 11 or 12.  I had both plus Liquid, although have recently removed S11. You just can't run Liquid and Studio 11 or 12 simultaneously. 

I am not sure why I have Studio at all to be truthful.  Between Liquid and After Effects, there's not much that Studio adds except the Bias SoundSoap from S11.  BTW--I was successful getting SmartSound fully functional with S12, but it was a pain and I had to reload a bunch of sound libraries.  In the audio tracks area, S12 took a huge step backwards IMHO.

It has been recomended to me to use the S12 for BD burns.  I'll be adding a BD burner, as well as raided eSata drives soon.

As far as After Effects... I can pick up CS4 MS for about $500 under an EDU discount through the Post Grad School I work for and am concidering adding it as well. mainly for the flash suite and some PS Extended plugins for panoramic video.

Have seen a cheap PC, only know following spec at moment -

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E7400, (2.8Ghz?) 1000Gb S-ATA hard drive, 4 Gb dual channel SDRAM with 667 MHz 63 bit, Nvidia GeForce GT140 DirectX 10, Vista Home Premium.

Aware that DirectX 10 & Vista may be a problem, but does rest sound ok for running Liquid (I used to run it ok for ages on old machine, but since 7.2 has dropped frames.

The GT140 is an OEM card, not sure what it equates to.

Have now found that GT140 is oem version of 9600 GT.

I am getting ready to build a new box. I am  trying to figure out which ATI video cards will work best with Liquid 7.2.

ATI seems to be making a zillion cards now. Is the HD series (3870,4670,4870.....) compatible with Liquid?

Is AGP or PCI recommended?

The newest series ATI PCIe card is what you want.

I bought Liquid 7.2 upgrade in New Year Sale (from v5.62) and finally looking to install it on my system in the next week or two.

I am taking the opportunity to give the system a small overhaul as cheaply as possibly. I'd value your opinions on graphics cards for it. Particularly looking relatively quiet one, since the system already sounds like a small hurricane!!!

Current graphics card is ATi 9000 AGP. System is based on 2x Athlon MP 2400+ processors in a dual processor motherboard (Gigabyte 7DPXDW-P), so relatively old. Am I better with a medium end newer card, or a higher end of an older series of card from ebay? If it makes a difference the board has a AGP Pro socket, so can take AGP or AGP pro graphics cards.

I'm happy to not have the "highest" performance, and no point buying something that is overkill for the rest of the system!

I'm hoping to silence the system further in the upgrades (larger slow moving fans - consolidate 5 drives older drives down to 4 new ones etc), but the graphics card is the one that will probably take me in the wrong direction sound wise, as my current card is passively cooled.

The system is running Windows XP Pro, which will be re-installed from scratch as part of the work. My firewire port is on my ancient DV500 card (hopefully that won't cause problems). I am editing standard definition Mini-DV tapes using the system currently, and have no imminent plans to move to HD.

Any advice would be well received, but especially some guide as to how the various eras of graphics card overlap speed wise. Inside each range is normally easy enough, but how fast is an X850 compared with an older 9800 or an HDxxxx. How noisy are they? For example maybe I can buy a passively cooled newer card that is as fast as an old 9800 but much quieter... or maybe even just a modern entry level card will have enough bangs for my needs with minimal bucks outlay.

Your video card is a DX8 card and will not work with 7.2. You need a DX9 or DX10 card for Liquid to work correctly and a PCIe card would be best in terms of performance, but you can't on that system. Also, old AMD processors are not particularly good for Liquid and 512mb of memory will not be sufficient. You should consider a new Intel based system or stick with 5.62. I never recommend updating older machines like this. You are unlikely to get acceptable performance and you may get lots of problems.

I have 2.5GB of RAM in the machine. It works quite nicely on Liquid 5.62, but I find the DVD making a bit frustrating at times on that version, and wanted a newer version mainly for improved DVD output options and reliability. The graphics card is the weakest link in the machine at the moment, hence planning to upgrade it whilst doing the cleanup & rebuild the machine is getting anyway. It will still get the work done regardless of whether it gets v7.2 added or v5.62 put back on.

There is no budget to replace the system, so that isn't an option.

My preference would be to spend less than £50 on a reasonable graphics card (possibly second hand off ebay), that will allow the Athlon MP machine to run v7.2..... but failing that, I would want it to at least work with v5.62 (if I had to fall back to that). That might severely limit my choices, as there might be few or no graphics cards that will work with both versions (not at the same time, just if v7.2 doesn't work, I would uninstall, an re-install v5.62 for the time being). If v7.2 has a reasonable chance of working (even if not optimally), then I'd risk going with a card that'll only work with v7.2, because my existing card isn't bad with v5.62, so that could be my fallback card and setup.

The only other option would be to setup a dual boot on my AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ with 2GB Ram (currently running Vista). That system would need a new graphics card too (as it runs an ATi R300 integrated graphics), but at least has a PCI E slot, but that isn't an ideal solution for me....

I going to take your word for the old Athlon MP system not being up to handling v7.2....    (although I might try it anyway sometime in the future when I have more time available for playing around!)

So instead of upgrading that old machine I am going to upgrade the newer machine from an Athlon X2 3800+ to an Athlon X2 6000+ processor. I will still need a new graphics card though. That machine currently runs Vista with integrated graphics. The plan would be to dual boot it with XP for running Liquid

So is Vista reliable enough for Avid? (I know it is not supported but others have it working). My preference is to run XP on the machine instead. Does that choice affect which graphics card I pick? Given the above, I will be picking a PCI-E graphics card now. My current thoughts are to get a HD4850 to go with the Athlon X2 6000+ CPU. I suspect that combo will give lots of mileage on SD footage... in fact might be overkill.

If I wanted to save some money on the graphics card, what would be the next rung lower? And would it still work fine? HD4550 is half the price of HD4850 and is completely silent (no fan), is that any good?

I need to act quickly though, as I need it running by Wed, ready to test and take away with me at the weekend...

First, I prefer machines built around Intel CPU's and motherboards with Intel chipsets. I really can't comment on how well Liquid will run on a specific AMD system. Others here have said it runs fine. I have no experience with them.

Stick with XP if at all possible. You can make Liquid run under Vista but it was not designed for that OS. The video card is independent of the OS. Any video card will work with either.

The less expensive ATI card should be fine. Any recent ATI card with at least 256mb of memory will work fine with Liquid. The speed of the CPU is more important than the performance of the video card at a certain point.

You will need to install 7.2 and the Liquid DX10 patch for things to work correctly. Make sure you download the full install of 7.2 and the DX10 patch. Do not install any earlier versions.

The newer ATI / NVidia chipsets work fine with The AMD 6000+. (Get the 89watt Brisbane Core, or better yet one of the Phenom 2 Calisto Cores if the MoBo supports it)

The X4850 does require a 500watt PS, so factor that in. Make sure you do not skimp on memory buy from a "name" vendor.

Liquid takes advantage of higher clock speeds more so than multiple cores, the Intel E 8500 / P35 has been a favorite due to the bang for buck value. The AMD 780 / 770 chipset has

performed as expected for me.

The bits arrived and XP is installed. I went for the 6000+ (3.1Ghz, which I think is the Brisban core). I went for the HD4850 with a fancy Valman quiet cooler, since there was a reasonably priced on eBay.

Just watching the FULL 7.2 download now (in fact it says only 2 mins remaining, so all good).

I went for the 6000+ as it is the top processor supported by the motherboard I already had. The 2GB of memory is top rated stuff with built in heatsinks. Power supply is already 520W (or was it 560W?).

I'll use the full download, then the dx10 patch. Hopefully no problems with the Magic Bullet, TitleDeko & HFx stuff... will check the other threads for common gotchas.

All finished downloading, must dash, as it must be a running system by the morning!!! (cutting it a bit fine, as there's not a lot of time for troubleshooting if problems surface!!!)

I'm typing on that 6000+ on a Gigabyte MA 478EM MoBo with Corsair XMS 2 gig memory. Rock solid running Windows 7RC.
