    NexGen update

Just wondering if LewS or anyone else has heard any updates on the NexGen development / release?

    Re: NexGen update

Sorry, nothing new to report at this time. AFAIK from reliable sources, work continues on the development of NexGen with considerable resources being applied to it.

    Re: NexGen update

    Hello,

Been lurking and don't think I've posted yet. (I don't think, hehehe).

Just wondering why Pinnacle doesn't give ANY information on the NexGen. I have studio 11 and have strongly been considering the purchase of Liquid, but sorta waiting around to see what NexGen has to offer. I'm afraid a lot of people have abandoned ship because of the lack of information on the NexGen.

I have looked at Liquid and seems to be a good program, but Studio is sorta, in my opinion, limited on what all you can do, compared to Liquid, but that is expected. Studio is still an awesome program, I am NOT knocking it in ANY way, I have only done a few projects with it and it is easy to use and has some cool effects.

I would like to get Liquid, but it is EOL. I also want to continue waiting to see what NexGen has to offer, but then again other companies have programs that are not EOL and are promoting them.

Really just giving my opinion, but it would seem that Pinnacle would give us SOME sort of information, to maybe keep us hanging on with hope and not go to another program. Pinnacle may not be able to offer any particulars on the new software because of competition between the software makers, but maybe they could at least give us SOMETHING.

    Re: NexGen update

Pinnacle is a public company. They do not divulge information about future products until they are ready for release. They have said more about NexGen than most companies would. If you can't wait, and you don't want to buy Liquid, then go elsewhere or stick with what you have. They have given out some information.

    1. New product is in development.

    2. It will be aimed at the prosumer market.

    3. It will be easier to use.

    4. It will support newer file based cameras.

    5. It will not be competitive with Media Composer so certain professional features such as networked project sharing and other group collaborative features will probably not be in it.

Now you have something. Does that help?

    Re: NexGen update

LOL!!!! You crack me up LewS. Big Smile

Yes! That DOES help! Thank you for posting that.

I had heard some of that, but I didn't realize it came from Pinnacle, I thought it was other people's opinions of what they THOUGHT was to come of the NexGen.

I'm still sad liquid is not stickin' around, but since you posted that, I think I may hang out and wait to see what NexGen brings.

    Again, thanks LewS!!!  PizzaBeer

    Re: NexGen update

    Hi lew

just a small question is that true with no more networked project sharing?

That was one of the best features ever don´t loose it! We are working here with 5 or 6 machines in 1 project and it runs brilliant there you can forget mc or fcp!!!! there is no more stable system for years then liquid!

So is that then really the fact or is it more an guess????

    thanks in advance manu

    Re: NexGen update

While I can't be absolutely certain, I am pretty positive that network sharing will not be part of NexGen. I think you should start to consider moving to MC or another application when you feel the the current version of Liquid will not meet your needs. Then again, I always suggest wating to see what NexGen will really be.

    Re: NexGen update

    Thanks lew

than i will still wait and hope that this feature will not day!

MC is no option yet there are some nice function in there now in version3 but it is stil a pain in the a... to work in the timeline etc. compare to liquid

things i had already in my first blue are now where media composer is what working in timeline means!

I love the curent version and it does a lot of my needs mostly more then i need but the codecs are playing a big roll!

Do you think there will be any updates what codecs means for liquid in the future!

for example native support for the mpeg4 of ex file also red footage etc

    thanks manu

    Re: NexGen update

The EX files need to be put into an MFX wrapper with Sony's Clip Browser. The same is true for MC.

Smetvid has a workflow for RED and Liquid.

There will not be any further updates to the current version of Liquid AFAIK.

    Re: NexGen update

    DropIn-Tv,

We have same feelings about Chrome (Liquid)
Have 4 of them tied to SAN and composing/editing comercials almost 24/7

We have also MC (software only) but use it only to open offline projects and
do transfer everything into Chrome for finalizing.

To be onest. If one morning Chromes do not work what would I buy intead.
Smoke would be the best bet but it is too expensive for us.
Media Composer - looks like it still is Video Machine on steroids. Isn't MC code from the same age?
Premiere - good integration with AfterFX and Photoshop is a great plus. But still doesn't feel PRO. Hear about stability issues with CS4.
FCP- Not used, just looked over the shoulder. Last update 2 years ago and rumours about abandoning. On the other side Color (bugy), large user base and rumour about the upcoming upgrade.
There are more like Edius, Matrix, Piranha etc. Nerver used.

As about the the Red support i see a very bright future with Liquid. Just some patience.
For now if you are not familiar yet look at Red Liquid here: http://www.stuudio.ee/Red/RedLiquid.htm (Link may need some refreshes)

    Long Live for Liquid!

    Re: NexGen update

If you guys want to play around a bit, download the trial version of Edius and play with it. It is very much like Liquid right down to the interface. Don't know what its lifespan will be either as Grass Valley may be up for sale. However, worth a look. My bet is Liquid just as it is will be good for several more years and adaptable to new formats through external programs. I would not rush to do anything right now.

    Not with MC 3.5.

You have End to End XDCAM support and full native XDCAM SD & HD disc/card access and editing with Avid Media Access.

Yes, I think that goes along with AMA and I expect we will see something similar in NexGen.

    Re: NexGen update

My two cents is that the marketing and finance folks have really put the NextGen team in a pickle. If you have a product (say Liquid) and it doesn't sit in your present product lineup but has a loyal base, then it's possible to move a product in a direction that makes sense for your business model. You'll loose a few customers and hopefully gain a few more. You can work in short time intervals putting improved and repositioned product out every year or so.  If you envision a completely new product for some theoretical niche then you've got terrible problems. The niche moves as fast as you can develop the product. There's a bunch of increasingly able products at the bottom of the editing market and very few products at the top. Most at the top are leveraging suites of applications to accompany their editing software.

I don't think that NextGen can be a successor to Liquid, already too much water under the dam. The new product needs to be something completely different, maybe it keeps all the media in the cloud, maybe it incorporates community in video editing, maybe I'll be able to twitter everybody who works on or looks at a project which which I've been involved. If the developers remain constant on trying to find something that fits in the price between pro applications and consumer applications for the theoretical middle ground of prosumer and nonboradcast video, I think it's dead as it hits the shelf. Love Liquid and will remain until I have to change but that's how I see it.

    Re: NexGen update

I think there is a new dynamic media emerging, slowly, more to some like evolution. TV as we have known it is a dying media, the Internet is the new place so I would welcome a application that is geared toward a new media. dang,  I was hoping to write a lot more....have to run, maybe more on this later. great discussion as always.
