    10.8 - won't Render

Hi all first post.  I've gone about 15 pages deep in searching about my problem as well as going through the Knowledge Base.  I've used Studio since Studio 7.  My computer won't render at all and freezes when I hit create.  So far this is what I've tried to remedy from reading here in the forums.

    1)  Unistalled and re-installed Studio 10 (did not delete the Hollywood effects though) - as recommended by the Knowledge Base

    2)  Unintalled Nero 6 - I didn't realize it had a movie maker as well - as recommended by the Knowledge Base

    3) Deleted Auxillary files of both the existing project and all projects as recommended in the forums

    4)  Deleted the larger than 500+Mb files in the settings.vst file as recommended in the forums

Rendered ok only once after the Uninstall/reinstall, it was a new short project.  Now still hangs, all projects, everytime.

    Still need to try:

    1)  found where not auxillay files may be deleted via Studio 10.  So I will check and try that next navigating to the folder through windows explorer.

    2)  Will also extend the timeline and check for gaps -per suggestions from the forums.

    3)  Will check the "clean boot" option but my computer I think is pretty clean -per suggestions from the forums.

    anything I'm missing?

The "repair windows on top of itself" option recommended here http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/?viewRN=rnanswer may be a problem.  I don't have a disc for that because the XP OS was already installed when I bought the computer.  Any suggestions in regards to this and what is the likely hood of that being the problem?

Video was captured from my Dad's camcorder with the harddrive.  Nothing special.

My Computer specs are:  Intel Pentium 4 2.6GHz Hyper-Threading, XP service pk 2 Media Center Edition, ATI Radeon 9200 with 128MB memory, 3G RAM, Hard drive memory is120 Gb with additional external 300 Gb drive and both have plenty of space.

    Thanks for the help.

    Re: 10.8 - won't Render

    Welcome to the ForumSmile

    Try this:

Insert S10 Prog Disk & choose "Repair" in "pop-up", following initial Installer & then Update to S10.7, instead of S10.8.

None, IMO. You will have a hidden System Recovery (inc Windows) Partition on your PC's OS Local Hard Drive C: You might have a System Recovery Prog Launcher, in Start / All Progs, to Reinstall Windows. You might also have a facility to make a System Recovery DVD, in that Location. If you don't, you should be able to either get one free or for minimal cost, from PC Manufacturer/Supplier.

Pressing F12 at PC Boot-Up also Launches System Recovery on my PC. It might do on you'rs.

    2)  Unintalled Nero 6 - I didn't realize it had a movie maker as well - as recommended by the Knowledge Base
Not neccessary IMO. Don't know why that's recommended in FAQ.If you're Rendering to DVD, Uninstalling Nero's "Drag-to-Disk" Prog InCd can fix DVD-RW Probs, but Pinnacle's Instant DVD, is more likely to be the culprit. If you have that, Uninstall it from ADD/REM PROGs.

If any/all of the above fix your Render prob, Reinstall Nero 6 & if no further probs, keep it on your PC. It has a number of useful Tools & if you have Render to DVD probs with Studio, you can Burn with Nero, which is more reliable than Studio.

    Re: 10.8 - won't Render

Thanks Colour.  I will add your two recommendations to my list and try it tonight.  What is the reason why I would update to just S10.7?

In the mean time, last night, I went to settings.vst file and deleted the over 500+ mb files, then I deleted the auxiliary files of which there we're close to 3K.  Whats funny is that I had deleted all auxillary file the night before using the S10.8, so I don't know.  After both steps, I tried rendering a smaller project, this time for the first time, the rendering began, and about a minute into it, when it got to the end of the menu, I got this error.  Export Failure (Render Error) 0/2045@00:00 12.03[00:00:12.03-00:11:33:24]C: Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Pinnacle Studio\Data\Render/Nathan dcab016b\DVD\Studio Sequence\Temp 01m2v.  I'm not totally sure about the last part 01m2v as I could barely make out if that what that said.  "Nathan" is the name of the project I was trying to render.  Any idea what this is telling me?  All I found in searches was:

    delete the render folder?

    Enable background render?

Disable hardware accelleration or reduce by 2 noches?

    Remove Pinnacle instant DVD?

What do you think?  At least there seems to be some progress.  I guess this is why I haven't stepped up to Studio 12 or another type of Movie program.  I feel like I would be buying into new problems.

    thanks.

    Re: 10.8 - won't Render

What is the reason why I would update to just S10.7?
S10.8 is primarily for Vista Users. You have XP.

Although S10 was a pig for many users (Depending upon your workflow), particularly S10.0 / 10.1 & 10.6, S10.7 is the most stable Version & many still have it, including myself , alongside S12 Ultimate.

As I recall, many Users who had S10.8 with XP, had probs Rendering to DVD (the Render wouldn't complete} & Repaired or Reinstalled to S10.7, with no further prob. Also there were probs with no sound on DVD with S11 & S10.8 (Although Bittman has stated that there were also some with S10.7). The Disk Export Patch resolved this for S11 & !10.8, but not for 10.7. If you encounter that prob (unlikely, IMO),  you would have to Update to S10.8 & apply the Disk Export Patch.(Catch 22 )

To help things run more smoothly, go to:

Start / My Computer / Right-Click on your Local Drives Icons / Properties / Error Checking / Check Now & do both consecutively. I do Error Check 1, several times a week & 2, weekly.

Regular Defragmentation of Hard Drives speeds-up Studio's operation. Many Users have a 3rd Party "Set It & Forget It" Defragmenter, which Defragments "On The Fly", when your HDDs are idle. diskeeper.com

    Re: 10.8 - won't Render

    See my Post above first.

    delete the render folder?
Yes. That'll Delete all Auxilliary Files.

    Enable background render?
Only if you've applied Video Effect(s), otherwise not. Others may differ.
Disable hardware accelleration or reduce by 2 noches?
Not as a matter of course. Leave that till last, if you still have probs.

    Remove Pinnacle instant DVD?
    Yes & Mediamanager/Server if you have it. It's a System Resource-hog.

Probably best to do all of the above over a couple of days or so, rather than in one go.

BTW - If you have any outstanding Projects, you should back-them-up first, before Repairing or Reinstalling Studio, as an insurance. If you have a Project created in S10.8, you won't be able to Open it in S10.7. If you do & can, Render it to File DV-AVI & redo Menue?

    Good luckSmile

    Re: 10.8 - won't Render

Thanks again Colour for your help.  Here's what I did last night per your instructions.  Except I couldn't resist doing it all at once.

    1) First I deleted all aux files... just in case.

    2) Inserted Studio 10 disc and did the repair.

    3) Installed 10.7 patch.

    4) Removed Pinnacle Instant DVD and Pinnacle Media Manager server.

    5) Restarted computer

    6) Checked the background rendering but it was already enabled so I left it.

    7) Deleted auxillary files again, the one file larger than 500+mb in the settings.vst file, and I also went and deleted the folder named Nathan which was one of the projects.  Nathan was located if I remeber correctly in with the Render file.  Not sure what exactly was contained there.

    8) Started up Studio 10.7.  I had about 8 projects (10 hrs worth of video) where I had already inserted all the clips into the timeline but no editing done.  I think all that was lost, as I could open the projects, but most of the video clips and menus were grayed out or black.

So then I redid one of my quick projects (20 mins long).  Inserted the clips, menu and transitions.  The dark to light greens bars turned to yellow so quickly that when I was ready to save the project to Nathan again, it was done.  So far so good.  Then I went to the Make Movie tab.  I chose my usuall settings, to DVD, and selected the re-encode entire movie, and render disc content but don't burn...just in case.  The result was great, content rendered successfully, and then I burned it to a DVD.  Friday night I'll have time to render and burn a couple more movies to see to help validate that the software is now fixed.  I'll be sure to follow up later after a few smooth successful burns, hopefully with good news.  Thanks for all your help in this.

I do still have a few questions though...when I first started Studio, I got a window pop-up that read, "Cannot load Adorage support-library/plug-ins" or something to that effect.  First time I've seen   The knowledge base tells you how to fix it (though I didn't try it yet).  It doesn't however tell you what it means or does.  Can you tell me exactly what it is and do I really need it.

I didn't check for errors, think I still should or let it go.

Do you think I should be ok in making my settings in Make Movie, "Safe Mode: Render content then burn to disc"?

How about the burn speed, what do you recommend as the best setting there, automatic, slow or fast, what do you use?

I don't really have clutter on my hard drive as I store all my photos on DVD's, should I still defragment?

Is there any danger in having to many projects at once?

     Thanks again for your help!

    Re: 10.8 - won't Render

Can you tell me exactly what it is and do I really need it.
Adorage is a Prodad Video Effects Studio Premium Content Plugin. You have to purchase it separately. See prodad.com for info. Apply the KB Fix for Error Message to go away. However, You can continue with S10 loading, by alternating OK & red X on Error Message.

Do you think I should be ok in making my settings in Make Movie, "Safe Mode: Render content then burn to disc"?
I'm not a Studio DVD Expert, since I mostly Burn in Nero. However, when using S10, i've never had a prob with with burning directly to Disk. S12, you create a Disk Image 1st & then Burn to Disk.

How about the burn speed, what do you recommend as the best setting there, automatic, slow or fast, what do you use?
    Auto @ 8500 kbs, in S10.

I don't really have clutter on my hard drive as I store all my photos on DVD's, should I still defragment?
A heavy Editing session will Fragment the Files. If you have a 3rd Party "Set it & forget it" Defragmenter, your PC will operate at optimum performance at all times (As previously Posted).
Is there any danger in having to many projects at once?
Yes. You could potentially lose & have to redo all of them. The best Editing practice is to either "Save As" each Edit to the same File Name, but with incremental Numbers. Eg; Dog 1.stx, Dog 2.stx etc. That way, if you lose your last Edit, you can Open the previous one & only have to Redo the last one, instead of having to Redo the whole Project. Better still, to Render each Edit to File DV-AVI (Name & Numbering as above) & put those in Timeline dor final Render & adding Menue. That way, you don't lose anything.

    Good luckSmile

    Re: 10.8 - won't Render

    Just a quick follow up.

This weekend I got the chance to really test out Studio 10.7 and all the changes Colour helped me with.  I'm happy to say I sucessfully rendered and burned 5 home movies.  Ranging from a 20 minute one, to 1 and 2 hrs.  Not one error, failure, or hang up.  And tested that they play on my DVD players.  All was great!

    Thanks again!
