Analog camcorders connections to Vista 64 computer

I'm sure this question has come out often, but I can not find the thread. Have a Sony Hi 8 camcorder (analog) and would like to connect it to my computer.  The computer does have an IEEE1394 input, but what I need to know is what specific cable do I use to connect the camera to the computer.   I used to use a Dazzle device but now they do not have drivers for Vista 64.  Anyone knows?

    Welcome to the forum Jesus,

The cable you are seeking is a Firewire Cable and if you click on this LINK you should see a picture showing the connectors on the cable.

Of course you need to check your PC and Camera to but I'm certain the camera end is correct because I have used this on my Sony Hi-8

    Hope that helps

    OOOooops!!!Embarrassed Embarrassed Embarrassed

Jumped the gun a bit there, sure the firewire cable will fit your PC BUT not the Hi-8 camera. My apologies for that . My only excuse would have to be that I have several different cameras here and my brain was not properly in gear Embarrassed.

To go from Hi-8 to your PC you will need some form of analogue - DV convertor to use the Firewire input. Maybe someone on the forum could recommend a suitable one to use as I haven't used one for quite a while. When I need one I use the passthrough facility on my Digital-8.

There are some 64 bit dazzle drivers now, so what model do you have?

There also seems to be some optomisim that Pinnacle are working on more.

However, THIS LIST shows what capture devices work with 64 bit Vista

Thanks for your help, jjn.  The Dazzle I have is the DVC90.  Already checked with Pinnacle but their blunt answer was "we don't have a driver for that unit".  No hope that maybe later they would provide one.  Anyway, I will check the list.   Maybe I can find one I can use.  Thanks again!

Thanks, Mick!   I thought I had solved the problem with your help.   Maybe I can borrow a digital camera with a passthrough facility if I can't find anything else.

Been there and tried that. Studio would not allow me to do a pass thru from a digital camera. It will only take a tape or drive camera. I had to purchase a Moviebox to do it. Moviebox will do a S-Video but I have never been satified with the results. Quite often I would get a lot of dropped frames with the moviebox and forget recording in anything but AVI.

I have used a digital camera with a pass thru mode to transfer hi 8 tapes to the computer. Video and audio out from the hi 8 camera is connected to the vid and aud input to the digital camera. The digital camera is connected to the computer via the fire wire cable. Studio will not start the hi 8 camera so you have to do that yourself.
