Running out of RAM memory on big projects, how to solve?

    Hi Guys!

I´m new on this forum but I´ve used Pinnacle Studio for a long time. I now use Studio 12.
I wanted to expand my editing possibility and bought a new computer with dual hard drives, RAID linked as one, 1TB.

4GB of RAM and Vista 32-bit. (and Vista uses 1,5GB and Pinnacle uses the rest, 1,5GB)

My CPU is a Intel 2 Duo 3GHz.

    GeForce 9800 GTX grafic card with 512MB GDDR3/ 256bit

So there would be no problem with my future projects.

I use a Canon HG10 HD videocamera for my projects. (they are all in HD 1440x1080 25pic/sec 16:9)

I now have a movie that´s 1 hour and 30 minutes and now it´s virtually impossible to edit, then it is very tough and each transition only appears as an exclamation point.

I started to think about making small projects and then just cut them together but it´s not possible to cut out a project and paste it into an existing one. (Why not??)

Does any of you guys have a solution?

    Best regards

    Bobby

Is this a High Definition or a Standard definition movie?

but it´s not possible to cut out a project and paste it into an existing one. (Why not??)
It is, but the behaviour has changed, the scrubber needs to be active on the timeline for paste to become available.

What makes you suggest you are running out of memory? The transitions only appearing as an exclamation point would lead me to suspect there is an issue with your graphics card.

    Wow Your fast!!

I´ve edited my post with your requested information.

If I start Windows Task Manager it says, under performance, the the free Physical Memory is 0.

If I have a movie that´s about 15 minutes the transitions work great!

You don't mention your CPU, but as you aren't trying to edit AVCHD Full HD, I'd be surprised if it isn't fast enough. Looks like some sort of memory leak is occuring.

It's always worth checking your Graphics card drivers.

Are you working with background rendering on or off?

My CPU is a Intel 2 Duo 3GHz.

I´m not familiar with baground rendering, whats that?

Re: Running out of RAM memory on big projects, how to solve?

Background rendering is an option in Setup/Video and audio preferences that, when enabled, will try to render transitions and effects in the background, so preview will be smoother. Areas above the rendering slices are green, and turn yellow when rendered.

Your CPU should be OK for 1440 HD AVCHD. I don't run Vista, so I'm not familiar with how memory is paged and what settings you might have.

    Thanks.

I use background rendering. I see the green area.

How about the cut and paste action between diffrent projects?
    You say it´s possible?

Try turning it off and see if things improve

Yes, it should be. You might need to have both projects saved. They need to be the same frame rate. And as I said before, the scrubber needs to be active on the timeline for Paste to work.

Re: Running out of RAM memory on big projects, how to solve?

    Thanks, jjn!

I´ve turned the backgrund rendering off and it´s working much better!

I can go around the memory problem by making several small projects and paste them together.

You just made my day, jjn! Thanks!

Good you have a workaround for now Smile

Have a look to see if your project settings match your source video. Hover your mouse over the project name top left of the timeline.

    Happy editing Smile
