    Question before purchase.

    Hi,

Question about the software before I purchase.  Looking at Studio 12, which I think is all I will need.

First, what I want to do with the software.  I own many DVD music concerts from various artists, all have been legally purchased by me.  During the winter months when I cant get outside as much I run the treadmill and ride a stationary bike in my TV room.  Normally I watch these music video's, but the problem I have is either I want to see other tracks/songs from the same artist but possibly on another disk or an entirely different artist.  What I have to do now is stop what I am doing, change disk, FF to the song or chapter and continue on.  What I want to do is be able to take all the songs I like to work out to and combine them in 1 or more disks to use based on what mood I am in, but this pulled from different disks and artists.

I can "rip" these disks with no problem.  That ripped file in in VOB format, which I can then convert (encode) into mpeg4 format.  This seems to be the best compression and easily writable back to DVD to be played on either a normal DVD player or PS3 which is what powers the video in the TV / exercise room.

Problem I am running into is taking that mpeg4 file and then "chopping" it up into each song I wish to remaster.  Unfortunately the ripped files do not separate the chapters correctly, nor does the encoding conversion to mpeg4.  SO what I want to be able to do is easily view the mpeg4 file, and cut each song out and then save that cut song into its own file (song name) then put all the cut pieces back together to burn to disk.

Will Studio 12 allow me to easily do this?

    Thanks
    Paul

    Re: Question before purchase.

Studio 12 can do everything you have listed except remove copy protection. It looks like you have a way of converting comercial discs to unprotected vobs.

You can edit mp4 files in Studio and rewrite them to another file.

Your method is adding two additional levels of encoding for no reason that I can see - unless your PS3 and DVD player can play native mp4 files. The Video DVD standard is mpeg-2, and the vobs are already in that format.

    You are -

    • Ripping the DVD to VOB (mpeg2)
    • Transcoding the VOB to mpeg-4
    • Editing the mpeg-4 and saving it to mpeg-4 again
    • converting the mpeg-4 back to mpeg-2 vobs to burn to DVD

    Studio could

    • Import the VOBs as DVD titles (mpeg-2) without recoding
    • allow you to edit the mpeg-2s
    • turn the edited mpeg-2 back to VOBs (without recoding if you don't change the final bit-rate)
    • Burn the VOBs to a Video DVD
You can also add a menu and make each song a separate chapter. If you want to do anthing cleaver with menus it's best to buy Studio Plus as Studio Standard can only handle one menu.

    Thanks for the reply!

Good to hear that Studio 12 can handle the VOB file with out that conversion.  I guess in all my attempts before I took the unusable VOB and converted it into 1 file with audio and video combined thinking it would help in what I was attempting.

Making each song its own chapter is nice to hear also, but the menu feature of plus my not be needed.  If I can get them to 1 disk and chapter FF or Rev I will be quite happy.

I dont have any problems with copy protection, several Linux programs will rip plus one that I currently use.  I am not copying and reselling or even giving anyone a copy of the original disk, all these dvd's are 100% legeal.

    Thanks again!

    Re: Question before purchase.

One issue you might have with using chapters in Studio is that you can't have chapter markers without have an associated menu. That menu need not be at the front of the project though.

You could export a number of mpeg-2s and use them it whatever you are currently using to make DVDs.
