How to Install Smartsound into Studio12

I am summarising my journey to make it easy for the next person with the same query.
I am sharing this info as my expression of gratitude to -
    1. The people on this forum who gave me some info which allowed me to make it happen > they were 'colour', 'plemmens' and 'sfchuck'
    2. All contributors to the Smartsound threads on this forum
    3. Pinnacle  (for providing the forum)
    4. Smartsound (to Frank, who made me search harder in the forums)

    My query was -
I have a clean S12 Plus installation with the latest patch, on a new fairly clean machine XP SP3 with little else on it. I have orginal Studio7, 8 and 9 disks. (I didnt buy Studio 10 and 11).  I dont have any previous versions of Studio on my machine (deliberately, because I am fearful of problems). I have 3 Smartsound CDs that I want to load up and I want Studio 12 to recognise them and use them. Ideally I seek simple step by step instructions with some (brief/helpful) explanation (if possible so I understand why) to make Smartsound CDs be recognised and useable within Studio12.

Since I had never taken the time to explore the Smartsound website, I didnt know what "Quicktracks" were. Studio never mentioned the term Quicktracks.  I now know that this is the label for the Smartsound tracks within Studio. "Smartsound "Quicktracks" was supplied with & included in the cost of the Studio Prog, but discontinued in S11 & replaced by Pinnacle's "Scorefitter."

So here is what you do to get Smartsound running.

    1. Install the latest Quicktime Player.
Install the full version. I installed version 7.5.5.
    I found it here -  http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

    2. Install Smartsound_Pinnacle_Music.exe
Apparently ...... "Besides SmartSound Quicktracks you also need to install "SmartSound_Pinnacle_Music.exe" which can be found on disc 2 of Studio 10's set of installion discs." [I don't have Studio10 so I can't confirm]. I also dont know what version Smartsound_Pinnacle_Music.exe is.
But I figured that it is older than the next file to install so I reckon this file should be installed before the next.
    I found it here -
    http://rapidshare.com/files/35521633/SmartSound_Pinnacle_Music.exe
    http://www.filestube.com/2b19ac1642b33ea003ea/go.html

3.Install The Quicktracks Installer which is 'QuicktracksInstaller3090.exe'
    This is a Smartsound product.
    I found it here -  http://www.smartsound.com/support/updates.html?product=pinnacle

If you have got this far you will have a small selection of Smartsound tracks now installed on your machine and available ready to go in Studio12. I cant remember whether they get installed with step 2 or step 3 above, but they are the same tracks that were delivered with Studio7,8 and 9 (probably 10 too). These are the ones you "Own" as a licenced user. The ones that are described as "All" consist of the ones you "Own" and previews of ones that you don't yet own (until you purchse them from the internet). Ditto Smartsound SFX (SFX presumably is short for Sound Effects).

So to test your installation -

    1) Launch S12

    2) Click on the Audio Tool Box Icon

    3) Click on the Background Music Tab; in following "Pop-Up"

    4) In the following "Pop-Up", click the down arrow in the pulldown menu Where you see Scorefitter.

    You should see -

    Smartsound Music (Owned)
    Smartsound Music (All)
    Smartsound SFX (Owned)
    Smartsound SFX (All)

Choose SmartSound (Owned). Click the Smartsound button  to get a new dialogue window with tabs. Read and explore the various tabs. Take time to understand them. I experimented with trying to setup a new folder location to house Smartsound tracks but found that I could not change the default folder. So be prepared to have all your Smartsound tracks filed on C drive.

    5) Insert your SmartSound Cds consecutively & choose add to Hard Drive (or whatever shows in Installer "Pop-Up"). Yes! if you put a Smartsound CD in the drive, there is recognition that the disk is a Smartsound CD and you are asked some questions. Follow the directions.

    6) SmartSound "Owned " should be appearing  in the Source "Drop-Down" menu

    7) Select Library Radio Button

    8) All of your SmartSound Cd's  content should then show.

    Start using the tracks!!!

    Folewood,

    WELCOME to the forum.  Smile

Wow, what a GREAT POST.  Yes

Thank you so much for a clear and orderly set of instructions.  The inclusion of download sites for Smartsound_Pinnacle_Music.exe was very thoughtful and generous.

Whoa!  YesThanks a ton folewood!  I have been contemplating removing V12 from my machine to clean up as the upgrade seems to left tidbits everywhere.  Now I can do it with much less trepidation. Have a Beer on me.

Re: How to Install Smartsound into Studio12

Good post. Obviously, for many people the best part was the inclusion of Smartsound_Pinnacle_Music.exe, which, combined with Quicktracksinstaller3090.exe gets the Smartsound buttons and lists into Pinnacle Studio.

You CAN change the folder to put the Smartsound tracks into a different destination folder on any drive in your system.  Click on the Smartsound button at the bottom, click on the Folder tab, and click on Add Folder button to add a new folder destination. Then, with that new folder selected (highlighted in blue), click on Set Copy Destination to make that new folder the location for your Smartsound tracks.

Re: How to Install Smartsound into Studio12

    folewood:

I am summarising my journey to make it easy for the next person with the same query.

I followed your procedure and it was incredibly easy.

I had sold my 11 upgrade and all previous upgrades going back to a retail version of Studio 9, so I no longer had the Studio 10 install disks to go back to the music.exe file.  Your link got that for me.

I had purchased a retail version of 12 instead of upgrading and the transfer content wizard did nothing for the SmartSound I had working in 11.  Well, it kind of did.  I had Smartsound from the pulldown menu but it wanted me to insert the Studio 12 Ultimate CD or the Smartsound Palette CD.

Neither did anything.  So I've been using SonicFire Pro outside of Studio.

When I ran the Pinnacle Smartsound music.exe that fixed SmartSound without me even having to run the QuickTracks installer again.  Of course what also happened will give everyone here much chuckles.

    ScoreFitter is no longer available.

I don't care.  I tried to use some of that on an occasional project and just never could stand the "thinness" and artificial sound of it.

Anyway the info and instructions you've posted are INVALUABLE!

    Thanks much.

Re: How to Install Smartsound into Studio12

I am so thankful for the great minds that contribute such helpful information on this forum.  I have all my SmartSounds back and running with my upgrade to Studio 12.  I had purchased several of the disks years ago ($$$) when using Studio 9 and the thought of not being able to use them was a big disappointment, but no longer.  Thank you, thank you.

Betreft: How to Install Smartsound into Studio12

Thanks very much. I had to install Studio12 after my version of S10 caused too much trouble, wich the Helpdesk could not solve. I switched to S12 Ultimate (downloadversion). The Helpdesk informed me prior to the download that all previously bought content could be transferred. But the transfertool didn't find Smartsound. And the Helpdesk pointed out that the official policy of Pinnacle was that they didn't support Smartsound anymore (the fools!! and I mean the management, not the friendly people of the Helpdesk). It took me several hours of searching on the www before I hit the answer of Folewood. It was a very helpfull description and instruction. Now all of my 6 Smartsound CD's work as before. I can add again all the music I want to my video's. Folewood: thanks

Re: How to Install Smartsound into Studio12

Wow! I just came across your wonderful post. Thank you SO much. I have 50 Smartsound music CD's. I don't want to think how much money I have invested in them. Using the SmartSound software worked, but it was so much slower.

It seems I still need to reload all my music libraries again so QuickTracks will recognize them, but that's no problem and I have a 1 TB drive so space is there, too.

I can't thank you enough for this fix.

Re: Smartsound into Studio12 - what did I do?

Warning to users, do not delete Quicktime ..

I got tired of all the daily nags to upgrade quick time, even though I had turned off the nag stuff, so I decided to delete that POS software .. everything was fine for a week, then when editing a video, I want to add some smart sounds, and it wouldn't work, it was gone  ... humm ... so a reinstalled quick time, still nothing ... then I followed all the instructions in this thread, nothing , I even ran transfer wizzard, nothing .... so I did a roll back in vista and  ... nothing, but on a hunch, I did all the instructions again, and I now have a choice  but .. there is no "songs" in any of the listings, I appears that if I had Cd's, I might accept it, but I just want to use the default sounds that came with  previous versions of studio

     Anyone have any fresh ideas??

If I have this right, you had smart sound working, then you deleted quicktime, then you did not have the smartsound interface, then you re-ran the smartsound installer (which contains no music), and now you have the smartsound interface back, but not music? If this is correct, and you have studio 9, or studio 10 disk, the music installer can be found on them to get the free music back.

If you you still do not have the smart sound interface inside of studio, rerun the installer, you might have to re-run it up three times. Because every time you run it, if it See's that you have had smart sound at one time, the software goes into un-install mode instead of install, and thus you end up running it either once or three times before it works, but check to see if you have it after every re-run/reboot before re-running it again.

yes, it was working and by deleting quicktime, it was disabled, I did notice that the smartsound installer alternated between loading and un-loading the program, I'll look and see if I have studio 9 disk ... I know that versions 10 and 11 were online downloads ... more on this in the morning,

    thanks ghuck !!

If you have the disk, don't run the studio installer, pinnacle only calls the smartsound installer from within there installer, but open the disk up in windows, there will be a directory called something like 'addons' or 'Third party' (doing this from memory). In that directory there will be one called smartsound. In that directory with will be two installers, forgot there exact names, but one will be the plugin, and the other will be music, it will be obvious which one is which once you find this spot. Double click on the one for the music. Then your done.
