i have a question when will it be possible to capture with Chrome xe in the codec of dvcpro hd!

The AJA is with the new update able to capture this codec

XENA LH and LHe Version 3.5 Drivers, Machina™ Application, 3rd-party Plug-ins, Installation/Operation Manual and Release notes for Windows XP (32-bit) or Windows Vista (32-bit)

Update to XENA LH and LHe products. This release adds DVCProHD capture/edit/playback

so it shouldn´t be a huge problem or to implement that in the software of chrome xe dvcpro 50 and 25 are anyway in it or i´m wrong there!

Would be a great think to capture hd footage in a smaller codec then in the moment

Because digitizing yuv uncompressed in hd is huge files but going to DVCProHD which is a great codec and anyway in the moment able to edit!

So why it should be a huge problem to get it!

I don't know if anyone has tried this yet. Capture of DVCProHD in Liquid is pretty much restricted to XReceive from P2 cards, so I don't believe you can capture directly from the Xena card in into Liquid. I think you might be able to capture via Machina and then import into Liquid. Liquid can edit DVCProHD material once on the timeline. But it's a question of getting it to the timeline.

I am pretty sure the DVCPROHD codec is restricted to Adobe software.  If you have After Effects you could always capture that way and then import into Liquid.

 The main problem with this workflow however is the codec is designed to capture to quicktime files.  While quicktime files work in Liquid they are not the best format to use since Liquid will force convert them to what your sequence is set to.  Therefore capturing to a quicktime DVCPROHD codec isn't going to help a whole lot for Liquid.

Thats a bit of a pitty isn´t it!

The codec would be much smaller then yuv uncompressed and why it should´nt go is not clear in my eyes dvcpro 50 and 25 are also quicktimes and they works isn´t it! 

And if it runs on premiere on an pc why not with liquid! 

When i can set my timeline to dvcpro 50 it should be possible to make it to dvcpro 100 as well isn´t it!

But we would love to get an hd codec with smaller  rates then yuv HD to capture so we can get a live signal from 6 hours or more in our machine without having huge scasii raids with us!

So Avid please why we can´t get that if the hardware provides it!

It should be a must for a hd suit to have good codec to capture hd-sdi in smaller rates!

But why is the codec resricted it even works in final cut and the dvc pro 25 or 50 mbit is also quicktime and i can set the timeline like that these codecs have been around for us pinnacle user for ever

chrome, ivory,blue,

 

so avid please give that an go we need that and we deserve it

With the current Xena software you can capture DVCProHD using Machina. This is documented in the white paper posted below.

But it doesn´t go direct or?

it is an quicktime file in the end which you can´t import into liquid and you can´t play it in windows but it works then in fcp why is that!

And why it is not supported by chrome xe?

QT is a wrapper format You can import QT files into Liquid as long as the media stream stored within is in a CODEC that Liquid can use. AJA suupplies a DVCProHD CODEC as part of the software upgrade for the Xena, so you should be able to capture and view on the PC. Whether or not Liquid will be able to use this CODEC is unknown. But if it doesn't, it opens up the option to capture with Machina, transcode to MPEG-2 with QT Pro, and then edit using the MPEG-2.

If you've got the Xena, then get the latest software and give it a try.

Good idea

i´ve captured a bit so it comes up an quicktime file with dvcpro hd codec! But you can´t watch it with quicktime it needs a plugin says quicktime! So i cant export with quicktime pro then!

In the machina player you can see and play it but only there on an pc! On an mac with fcp no problem to play it! 

In adobe software you can´t see it either! 

So still hoping that chrome xe will support it soon!

The codec Aja licensed from MainConcept is licensed to only work inside of Macina and Adobe programs such as Premiere Pro and After Effects.  This is not a limitation of Liquid in any way shape or form but the way Aja licensed the codec.  The MainConcept codec is very expensive so they got a watered down version of it to give to it's customers for free.

You can capture DVCPROHD files in Machina but then you will have to buy your own DVCPROHD quicktime codec so any other program can read those files.

Yes I know it is a pain but thats the way Aja did it.  I think they were dumb to do it that way but hey what do I know.  They could have used photojpeg which is free and it would have still been cross platform between PC and Mac.

The Aja whitepaper explains how the Adobe only support works and they list a quicktime codec that you can buy to use those files in other quicktime programs.

Even if you do have a DVCPROHD plugin however the way Liquid works with quicktime the files will get force rendered to your sequence render settings so it still wouldn't be a great workflow.  Liquid would have to totally change the way it handles quicktime files which would be a lot of work.

OK, I found the release notes. And DVCProHD is only supported by applications that have Xena hardware support (so the CODEC is hardware based). You need a 3rd party decoder in order to see the DVCProHD from non-Xena applications (which includes QT Pro, Liquid, etc.).

For a freeware DVCPro HD decoder you can download the Panasonic P2 viewer utility. This will also install the DVCPro HD CODEC (note that you must first install the P2 drivers before you can install the viewer). The driver and viewer software is available from the Panasonic Download site.

For a commercial decoder, check out the one by Calibrated Software.

 i just wanna ad here the commercial decoder works ok it allows you now to play these quicktime files also to export and the best is you can directly import it into liquid
