Problems importing MPEG2 files into the timeline

    Hi there,

I have Studio 12 Ultimate and a panasonic HDC-SD5 which records in AVCHD onto flash memory. I can import video files from the camera in the .mts format into my album and then onto my timeline without a problem but, because of the capabilities of my laptop, i would prefer to edit in SD.

The camera came with software that converts footage from my camera into .mpeg2 format and i would prefer to edit this as the quality isn't too bad and the file sizes are significantly smaller. I can preview the footage when it is in my album but whenever i try to add it to the timeline it is a millisecond long and so only has the tiny first part of the clip.. i thought it wasn't going into the timeline at all until i expanded it and saw it was just tiny!

Any ideas on what's wrong or how to get this to work would be much appreciated :)
    Thanks in advance,
    goodyeahnext

    Welcome to the forums goodyeahnext,

Kindly update your profile so we know what kind of computer you are using.  Please see this thread:

    http://forums.pinnaclesys.com/forums/thread/122545.aspx

The video that you are importing to the timeline is now in MPEG format? How long is the actual video? Have the video pass through another converter and let's see what will happen. Use this one:

Are you sure they are converted to mpeg2? We have seen similar things for nonstandard mp4 files. Exactly what software is converting the mts or m2ts files to mpg?

Mark, nice to know that you’re also here to help. Can you recommend a download for an AVCHD to MPEG converter you have used?

Maybe he can try that too.

Re: Problems importing MPEG2 files into the timeline

    Hi everyone :)

My laptop is a Sony VGN-S3HP. Here's the spec..

    • Intel Pentium-M Centrino 730 Processor 1.6GHz
    • 512MB DDR2 SDRAM (have upgraded the RAM to 1.5GB with a chip from crucial.com)
    • 60GB Serial ATA Hard Drive
    • NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200 128MB dedicated graphics

The converter i am using is the one that came with the camera itself called HD Writer 2.0E.. It's made by Panasonic specifically for their HD flash memory range. It is definately converting to .mpeg2 because that is the only format it can convert to! :) The video lengths vary from around 10 seconds up to 40 seconds.. i've tried them all but they all do the same thing..

I'd be willing to try another converter but since i've spent so much on the camera and pinnacle, i can't really afford to pay for one!

    Thanks again!

TREX is a free converter. Run your converted MPEG-2 file in TREX and then use the new converted file in Studio. Let's see what will happen.

Re: Problems importing MPEG2 files into the timeline

yeah that seems to have worked, thanks very much :)

trex says it has a 60 day expiry date though... do i have to pay to keep it going or can i reinstall it or something?

thanks again for all your help!

Re: Problems importing MPEG2 files into the timeline

As Mark and I have suspected, there is something in the converted file that Studio does not understand. It could be an additional transcoding that your conversion software adds.

TREX needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled after the trial period. However, if it would still say expired, send me a Private Message.
