Does Studio Plus 10.7 capture footage using a HDD camcorder ??

    Hi

I've been using Studio Plus v 10.7 to capture footage from my MiniDV camcorder without any problems for the past few years.

I'm going to upgrade my video camera and purchase a HDD (hard disc drive) camcorder and I'm wondering if I will still be able to use my Studio v 10.7 to capture footage from a HDD camcorder or whether I'll have to upgrade to a newer version of Studio.

When I looked at the capture settings of Studio v 10.7, the only option in the drop down box under the 'capture source' tab is :DV Camcorder.

Does this mean this version of Studio won't capture from a HDD camcorder ?

Any advice information on whether I can still use Studio when capturing from a HDD camcorderd would be greatly appreciated.

     Thanks

    Karen

    Hi Karen,

I don't know what type of HDD camcorder you're getting, but the process for transferring video with a HDD camcorder is different to a tape-based camera.  Each clip on the HDD camcorder is a separate file.  You transfer these files rather than capturing in the way you're possibly familiar with.

All HDD camcorders have software accompanying software for transferring these video files to your PC. The process is very straightforward.

Hi pinshel,   Thank you for your reply,

Does this mean once I've transferred the video files to my PC via the software that comes with the HDD camcorder, that I then use Studio 10.7 (bypassing the capture process altogether) and go straight to edit section and then drop the clips into the movie window/timeline from my PC. ?

Also, can you explain the meaning of a' clip' on a HDD camcorder (as you mentioned above)   Is the whole say 1/2 hr of footage taken on the HDD camcorder a 'clip'  ?  Or is the footage taken broken up into smaller scenes/clips for ease of editing and this is what your meaning of 'clip' is.?   EG:  Similar to the capture source of tape whereby you can state to create a new scene every 60 secs

And is the meaning of a 'file'  the whole footage taken in one file, or just a collection of all the clips.

    Karen,

Yes.  One thing I would note here is that 10.7 doesn't process AVCHD video, which is the format used by Sony high-def HDD camcorders.  10.7 will process MPEG2 format which is the format used by many standard-def HDD camcorders

Every time you start recording on a HDD camcorder, a new file is created. The camcorder finalises that file when you press the button to stop recording.  This process happens each time you start and stop recording.  So the number of files on the HDD depends on the number of recording "sessions" (record/stop recording).   In the case of my camcorder, each file is given a name which is based on the time and date the video was recorded.

After you transfer the files to your PC using the camcorders proprietry software, you start Studio, go to the "Edit" tab and  navigate to the folder containing the files you have transferred. You will then see the files appearing in the same way as scenes from your previous camcorder.

Studio will attempt to split each file into scenes, depending on what settings you have chosen in Studio. These will appear as a scene under "Edit".  These scenes can be moved to the timeline in much the same way as you may have moved a "scene" to your timeline with your previous camcorder.

And yes, a file is all the footage taken between starting and stopping recording.

Pinchel, Thanks so much for your very helpful advice.   I'm buying a standard def HDD camcorder, so I'll be able to still use Studio 10.7.

I've looked in the capture format setup options of 10.7, and I can see that I can select in the preset drop down box either  DV or MPEG-1/2.  Currently it's set to DV for my MiniDV camcorder, so when I get my new HDD stand-def camcorder, is this where I then select MPEG-1/2 ?

Also is the video quality still good in comparision when the capture format is done  via MPEG-1/2 compared to DV.

    Karen,

No.  You don't use the capture tab at all with the process I've described.  You transfer the files using the software that comes with the camcorder. That transfer process doesn't utilise Studio at all.

The quality of MPEG2 is variable - there is a range from High to low quality.  The camcorder will no doubt have a range of settings in this regard.

The MPEG2 output from my camcorder is excellent.

Just a note. If the camera saves in AVCHD format, only Studio 11 and 12 supports this. Better search for converters online before hand or see if a software upgrade is possible.

Re: Does Studio Plus 10.7 capture footage using a HDD camcorder ??

I am using Pinnacle Studio Plus 11.  I just bought a Sony HDR-HC5 that came without any software. I connected the camera to my computer with the firewire cable but my computer does not recognize the camera's existence. No sign of it anywhere, including in Pinnacle's Capture, which says it is unable to connect to my video device, nor is the Sony listed in its "import dvd from file option" (in my computer.)

So, am unable to import video tape files from the camcorder. Windows XP Device Manager says my firewire connection is working just fine. What do I do now? Am I missing other software or using the wrong cable? The software that Sony provided to others more fortunate than me is not available, other than as an "upgrade", which requires the original disk. So how can I get my video out of the camcorder and into my computer??

    HELP

Re: Does Studio Plus 10.7 capture footage using a HDD camcorder ??

    Sony HDR-HC5
Is a High Definition Mini DV Tape Cam. This Thread refers to A Hard Drive Cam, which Records to Files, which are either Downloaded to PC's HDD as Files or Imported into Studio Edit Album, via a USB Cable, the same as you would from an  external HDD. You need a supplied Prog to Download the Files.

You are Capturing a Data Stream, via Firewire, to your HDD & not Downloading Files. Therefore you don't need a supplied Prog. However you do need a Capture Prog eg; Studio.

In view of the above, I suggest you read your Cam's Manual & S11 Manual re: Capturing via Firewire.

When you Connect your Cam for the 1st time (with it switched on), Windows loads & remembers it's Driver. You get a "Found new hardware Sony DV Cam" Pop-Up......Windows automatically Loads & Unloads the Driver each time you Connect & Disconnect thereafter & you don't get any further messages.

To check that Windows recognises your Cam, go to Imaging Devices in Device Manager. It will only show if it's connected & switched on. Then Launch Studio, which should also recognise your Cam, in Capture Device "Drop-Down".

Any further Probs, start another Thread.

Re: Does Studio Plus 10.7 capture footage using a HDD camcorder ??

You may have a set of problematic Firewire drivers or lack the drivers that the camera needs to transfer through IEEE.
