Liquid,Sony ex1 and Vista
Well I loaded full install of 7.2 on vista pc yesterday.Install went fine, no problems. After openning liquid and importing ex1 hd clip 1920x1080 the fun began, lol .
I,m not sure if I have timeline properties right or not clip is rendering as soon as I drop it on timeline, after it renders it plays fine. What should time line propertys be?
last night liquid was slugish and easy to crash on vista but after talking to Thomas this morning I double checked and had not installed sp1 yet (thought I had already done that)
External hard drive was conected via usb2 and I was afraid data transfer rate was to slow so I upgraded that to eSata and also installed X-Fi elite pro sound card today
everything is much better now liquid is snappy again. Of course I have not done a whole lot yet but only bug I see right now is whenI apply a gpu transion It has a green tint, cpu transtions work fine
my video card is 8400 gs, on Thomas's advice I will get ati 2900 in soon and try it
ahh yes I almost forgot I have burned a disk using liquid and 1 hybrid hd disk with studio 11. Studio seams to love vista It spit out disk faster than I have ever seen it do in xp and for some reason I do not get the green tint with studio transtions

Re: Liquid,Sony ex1 and Vista
The files must not be rendered when you put them on timeline. You are using wrong presets. I am using myself (so to test) AL 7.2 in Vista and it works flawlessly. Motion Blends that I bought works there fine and everything except gpu FX of course.

Re: Liquid,Sony ex1 and Vista
hmm?? I went back to check settings so I could copy them to you and realized that last project I exported test on lastnight was 1440x1080 so I changed to 1920 and deleted clips then drug new 1 to timeline. Now it does not render ,must have somthing to do with vista sp1
I will not try to do a whole lot more until ati 2900 gets here.

Re: Liquid,Sony ex1 and Vista
They shouldn't be rendered! They play back in RT if you have the right presets.

Re: Liquid,Sony ex1 and Vista
You have to manually change the timeline settings for Ex1 footage. The preset for XDCam is 1440x1080. The same thing happened to me the first time I dropped Ex1 footage onto the timeline. Chris

Re: Liquid,Sony ex1 and Vista
I got into this with another person who insisted EX! footage didn't work in Liquid. It does.
What you have to do is make sure you setup your sequence to match the material from the EX1. There isn't going to be a one size fits all solution here because the EX1 shoots in so many different formats. For example if you bring in some 1920x1080 35mbits 29.97 fps interlaced material you need to setup the sequence to match that. If the resoltuion or the framrate doesn't match perfectly then your material will come in as yellow slices. If you have Liquid setup to render yellow slices then it is going to render everything once you bring it in. The bitrate itself doesn't really matter for the material to come in as grey slices. To Liquid mpeg2 is mpeg2 and you can mix any bitrate including 300 mbit/s if you can get it. All that really matters is the resolution, framerate and sometimes if it is interlaced or not. If that is setup correctly the EX1 footage should come in as grey sliced material. I have now worked with 1080i 60i, 1080i 50i, 1080p 24p, 1080p 25p, 720p 50p and 720p 25p and it all works perfectly in Liquid once I manually setup the preset to match that footage.

Re: Liquid,Sony ex1 and Vista
I have tested some time ago and I think I have posted here EX1 editing with AL 7.2. It's good.

Re: Liquid,Sony ex1 and Vista
I've done the same as Thomas with the same result. I'm still working with some SD material, some material shot at HDV resolution and some at 1920x1080. I've found it best to create sequences "native" to the format shot, perfom all the editing I can, fuse the result and import the fused result into a master timeline for the full program. Saves hours of rendering time.

Re: Liquid,Sony ex1 and Vista
You are right IF all the footage on th timeline is the same. I you are mixing EX1 and normal XDCam (1440x1080) footage then one will have to render. In my case I might be mixing V1U and/or EX1 footage with DV footage. I will edit all of the appropriate footage in a native timeline and then bring it together at the end.

Re: Liquid,Sony ex1 and Vista
Why? You can use the scaling options.
Scaling options are the best in the market.

Re: Liquid,Sony ex1 and Vista
You are absolutely correct. Sometimes working in a native timeline and merging differing video types at a later stage has shown some efficiencies under my workflow. In the end it all gets scaled on the master timeline. I have no doubt there are better ways than how I do it. Chris

That's good to know. I'm hoping that Liquid will be compatable w/ Convergent Designs NanoFlash system coming out in the fall (uses the same SONY mpeg2 codec as the EX1 - but higher bit rate).
It's MPEG2 4:2:2 (1920x1080, 1280x720, 720x576/480) Long GOP up to 100 Mbps, I frame up to 160 Mbsp.
I thought I read in Liquid 7.2 help files that Liquid would only support up to a 50 Mbps rate for MPEG2.

Re: Liquid,Sony ex1 and Vista
Jim,
I have had many conversations With Mike from Convergent Designs on the subject of mpeg2 video. At this stage Liquid ironically is going to be the best NLE on the planet for dealing with footage from the Flash XDR and the Nano Flash. You may have seen some of my posts on the dvinfo forum. Mike still has to get me a few of the MXF samples but they should work great in Liquid. Liquid only supports making render presets from within Liquid for up to 50 mbits/s. It will however support any flavor of mpeg2 you could ever find for import. I also have a trick to manually hack presets in Liquid for up to 300 mbits/s render and fuse codec. This will give import, edit, render and fuse export of high quality material. If you have a Chrome Xe system you even have a solid HD-SDI output pathway back to the XDR to use it as your real time mpeg2 encoder for Liquid. About the only thing I cannot make Liquid do is capture material like this but thats what the XDR or Nano Flash is for.

Very cool. I read some of the your posts on the other board that you are making reference to. For some reason, the guys at CD seem to think that FCP is a friendlier pathway. That seems to be who they are trying to target right now. Liquid certainly seems to be a natural high quality platform for the higher bit rate XDcam stuff. I hope you get to test some files soon.
Back to the Vista experiement...I'd be interested in reading an update on the specifics. What doesn't work?
And also, which video card is considered the ULTIMATE on a Liquid machine and why?
