In my dvd player,  my dvd menu chapters (thumbnail pictures on the menu) are not shown as highlighted and therefore not selectable. In the dvd emulation within pinnacle they are hightlighted and selectable. They were previously selectable. I added one thumbnail chapter, but made sure it was selectable with a distinct color.

In quite a few cases under S10 (and even into S11), if you had a working menu, went back in and edited the menu structure (e.g. added a new menu page, or some such), editing that menu would cause the existing menu structure to "go bad".  It would LOOK like it would be good (it would play back successfully in preview mode), but it wouldn't render correctly.  I wonder if that's what's hitting you here?
 

that is the general outline of what happened  - working menu, made  a change to it, now it works in preview but not in final version. Were there any responses or workarounds to this situation? I can try to delete and re-create the menu afresh - a pain to do, but that's studio, easy as heck to work with, but little crazy enexpected bugs that I then spend a million hours to counter. For this project I was able to buy some time and put it out to youtube as an mp4.

I'm wondering if Avid/Pinnacle has some kind of co-partnership relationship with the oem's of the DVD platters since I 've gone through tons of them to just get one project done (I ran out of the RWs). :)

Did you try deleting the auxiliary files before rendering?

yes, I deleted all of the aux files b4 rendering and the  same problem occurred.

 

does anyone know of some dvd authoring tools / sw that I might be able to use to process the fine avis created in Pinnacle? I got to get this dvd out! 

When studio does this, you can usually fix it by deleting all of you links and then putting them back in in order, (starting with 1 and going to the last one in order) this can save a little work over from doing it all over from the start. In studio 11 you can now put markers in the time line, so you can mark it spot where you links were this can save time depending on how you created the project.

I did delete and redfine all the links, in order, in the body of the project - as well as deleting and redefining the menu itself - and the problem is  still occurring. I also reduced the number of chapters from 12 to 4 (reflecting the four menu chapters only, and still no good. thanks for the suggestion.

I am now creating an iso to try to burn with another tool to see if that wd do anything.

btw, I get this problem on both of my dvd players, one a phillips and the other a sanyo. Both dvd players played previous versions of  this project fine. 

How about re-importing that AVI file to a new project and putting a new menu?

I did that - kinda. I saved as a new project. then deleted the menu and chapter links in the body of the AVIs. Then re-created the menu anew and established the chapter links anew, but still same problem (selectable in preview , but not from the platter).

I think I'll try the idea of simply creating a new project from scratch and bringing down the AVIs that compose the project. One this  note, to add a detail about my situation: my project is not one menu, one avi, but one menu and about 12 AVIs, four of which were linked to chapters in the menu. Again, this composition worked fine before I added a fourth avi entry on the menu.

 

btw, the "create iso, and burn with another  tool"  approach resulted in the same problem, so it is not in the burn part of the process that is bad.

 

 

I'll reply to myself and report that following the last poster's suggestion of completely re-creating a new project - and not the approach I had done - results in good results - clickable chapters.

In  this case, menu modification of any kind is the bad  thing. So if I want to modify  this menu again, I will have to re-create it anew.

I believe this nees to be studied further. If more people are experiencing this situation, maybe this should be reported to Pinnacle engineering.

I do know that the menu editor "clobbering" a previously-working menu has been reported ad-nauseum under S11.   Other menu issues exist, too (e.g. return to menu markers getting clobbered if a menu is edited, multiple menus with return to menu markers may return to the wrong menu, menu links getting messed up when editing menus, setting links absolutely not working in Storyboard view in certain situations, etc.).  Most (but not all!) of these menu issues have proven to be predictable and reproducible in S11.  Unfortunately, it looks like time has marched on, and that those issues will be allowed to stay, unpatched, in S11.

We'll have to see if these same reports happen under S12, and if they do,  we'll have to see if those reported issues will be allowed to stay, unpatched, in this version.

I have run into this issue, though I'm on 10.8. I had tried deleting auxilliary files, and recoding entire movie but still didn't help. In the Dvd preview window it works as it should, but once it is burned to DVD you cannot select any items on the menu. In the end because of the need to finish I used another program to build menus, with the same video files and it worked first time out. I would be interested to know if others are seeing this issue. (Also this was on two different home dvd players one a phillips and other sony).

CW1, did you also re-edited the menu?
