Studio 12 - Unwanted Volume Changes and Menu Linking Problems

    A Different Volume Handle Problem:

I have a different kind of volume handle problem than I cannot find listed in the forums.

In Studio 7, 8, 9, & 10, when you made a volume change on the timeline for your video clips using the volume sliders, the volume change would stay in effect for as long as you left the volume at that setting.  The volume stayed at this new level through all the following clips unless you changed it again.

In Studio 11 & 12, I can make the same volume change with the slider and the change is shown by the volume level line (in the audio track of the timeline) to continue as it should on through the following clips.  The problem is that the ACTUAL volume change only lasts until the next clip starts.  The output volume then goes back to 0dB even though it is supposed to stay at the new setting.  I have to manually change the volume to the desired setting on every darn clip in the entire sequence of clips I want to be at a different volume. I should only have to change it once at the start and set it back at the end of the sequence.  I quit using Studio 11 because of this problem and bought Studio 12 hoping the problem was fixed.  It isn't fixed.  I hope this isn't a newly designed feature for Studio 11 & 12.  This problem is the biggest issue for me right now.

    Menu problems:

Another problem with Studio 11 that has not been fixed in Studio 12, is the chapter numbering for a Main Menu / Sub Menu setup that uses a ROOT button on the Sub Menu.  The ROOT button uses a chapter number.  If your sub menu contains a ROOT button and is two or more pages long, all chapter numbers on page two or after in the Menu Properties dialog box will be different from the Chapter Markers on the timeline.  This was not a problem in Studio 9 or maybe even Studio 10.  The chapter number in the Menu Properties always matched the Chapter Marker on the timeline.  Now, the chapter numbers on Menu Properties Page 2 are off by one, the chapter numbers on Menu Properties Page 3 are off by two, the chapter numbers on Menu Properties Page 4 are off by three, etc.  It still points to the correct clip in the timeline but the numbers should agree.

Another issue is with linking menus.  It used to be that when you linked a chapter in one menu to another menu, the chapter indicator in the Menu Properties dialog box changed to the marker color of the menu it was linked to and was labeled as M2, M3, etc.  This is not the case in Studio 12.  The color is that of the menu you are working with and it only says "Menu" giving no indication whatsoever as to which menu it is linked to.  Come to think of it, this wrong color / lack of linked menu number also shows up in a sub menu on the ROOT button, if one is used.  It should be the color of, and be labeled "M!".

In Studio 11, there were all kinds of problems linking menus. When you went to edit one of the linked menus, the links would vanish from the menu you had just finished working on.  I ended up putting a half second title image of the menu before the actual menu and setting the link to this clip instead of the menu to stop losing my links.  I have not used Studio 12 enough yet to see if this problem has been fixed.

Has anyone else had these problems or are you able to shed some light on workarounds?

(I have major health problems but try to monitor my posts for updates as best I am able to.  Thanks for your understanding if I don't reply right away.)

Give me some time to look into this.

Re: Studio 12 - Unwanted Volume Changes and Menu Linking Problems

    Marc,

Have you been able to duplicate the problems I inquired about?  I have been unable to access your website all week.  The rest of the Internet worked fine just not any pages on the Pinnacle website.  Was there some sort of a problem all week long?

I have found 2 additional problems.

One of my projects that I started in Studio 11 (and wasn't able to complete because of the volume problem I described in my initial post), I opened in Studio 12.  Of the 3 source tapes used in the project, only one of them shows up properly in the album with check marks on the clips used in my project.  In each of the other two tapes, no check marks appear next to the clips that are used.  If I go into the timeline and right click on "Find Scene in Album", it goes to the clip in the album but, there is no check mark by the clip.  Even the clips beyond the areas I have edited so far do not show up in the album with a check mark for being used so it isn't from editing the clip.  Do you have any idea what might cause this?  My other two projects imported from Studio 11 for the same volume reason do not seem to have this problem.

    Another Problem - Only Cosmetic:

This problem exists in both Studio 11 and 12.  Take your mouse and drag it across the File, Edit, View etc. menus at the top of the program window.  Notice how they change color and do not change back.  Now click on one of the menus and again slide your mouse back and forth across the menus and notice this color change.  Again, the menu should change back to the base color when it is not in use and it does not.  This is just careless programming.  How can your testers not notice something so obvious?

Please let me know if you come up with anything on all these problems.  Thanks for your help.

    Hi Paul,

I am not able to replicate the cosmetic issue that you spoke of. Regarding the initial 2 issues, I have yet to be successful in replicating it. To be able to document this better, would it be possible to secure a screen shot of you showing the clip that is supposed to be checked which is in the timeline?

Re: Studio 12 - Unwanted Volume Changes and Menu Linking Problems

    Marc,

I am so sorry about the delay getting back with you.  With being sick most of the time I was not able to reply sooner.

On the first problem with the unwanted volume changes.  It appears to be a problem in my project that transfered from Studio 11 where the problem originated.  When I start a new project in Studio 12, and use the same clips I am having problems with in my project, the new project does not have the volume problem I described.  I may have to redo all 3 of my Studio 11 projects I opened in Studio 12 that already had this volume issue.

    Menu Problems:

I have 2 screen shots showing what I am talking about but I am not able to link them to this reply.  It says I do not have administrative priveliges to link the files on the Options tab.  How do I get the images to you?

The submenu screen shot actually shows all the problems I listed in my initial post.  I used your Extreme Main and Extreme Sub menus and your OurFunVacaction.mpg video as source material so you can surely duplicate it.  Be sure you notice the beginning of the chapter number descrepincy on menu page 2 as I noted.

    Used Clips Not Checked:

Again, this issue is only in a project which was imported from Studio 11.  I guess I will have to start over with these projects because the problems only come from projects created in Studio 11.

     Cosmetic Issue:

I believe this is an issue with the desktop theme I am using in Windows XP.  (I cannot tolerate the cartoonish default Win XP theme.)  The theme was called Silver Something? I believe.  I cannot find the source file for the theme anymore.  I discovered that the same mouse over problem occurs in Microsoft Paint so I am thinking it is not a problem related to Studio 12.

The only real issue yet here is fixing the Menu Problems where the chapter numbers get mixed up and the menu links that do not give an indication which menu they are linked to.

    Thanks for your help.

Try this thread for posting images. This should get things rolling.

Re: Studio 12 - Unwanted Volume Changes and Menu Linking Problems

    Marc,

The first image shows the main menu problems of not indicating which menu is linked as outlined in my initial post:

The second image shows all the menu problems I listed on one screen.  This image shows how the chapter numbers get out of sync.  I showed page two of the menu where the chapter numbers are off by one.  Page 3 would be off by two chapter numbers, etc.

Please review my initial post for the detailed Menu Problem descriptions.

    Thanks for the help

P.S.  The directions you gave me do not tell how to get the full size image to display here.  I spent an hour or more before I finally found the Thumbnail off setting for my pictures and the correct code to use so they would display at full size.  Please clarify the post you refered me to that leaves out this important information..

Re: Studio 12 - Unwanted Volume Changes and Menu Linking Problems

I am able to confirm and reproduce the chapter title issue being off by one. For the technicalities behind the chapter linking, I am not sure about that nor have the ability to determine the cause of the issue. I am more than happy to report this to our QA team for a possible bug report and fix. In the meantime anyone else have an Idea?

    Recipe:

    1. Open new Project
    2. Add Extreme Main Disc Menu
    3. Add Extreme Sub Disc Menu
    4. Add Ourfunvacation.mpg to the timeline.
    5. Link "Play Movie" to the start of Ourfunvacation.mpg
    6. Link "Scene Selection" to M2.
    7. Link Chapters to corresponding scenes in the MPG sample
    8. Keep Linking chapters until you reach page 3 of M2
    9. Click the check box for "C1" to show chapter numbers. (This can be found on the lower right hand corner of chapter editor page)
    10. Now browse the chapters linked to the scenes, Page 1 will show C1 - C4, when you go to page 2 C6-C9 and C11-14.

Re: Studio 12 - Unwanted Volume Changes and Menu Linking Problems

    Marc,

I see you found and could replicate the problem with the incorrect chapter numbers.  Now hopefully, QA will fix this problem.

You did not mention anything about the other problem where a linked menu gives no indication which menu it is linked to.  Instead of showing M1, M2, etc. in the color of the linked menu like Studio 9 does, Studio 12 just says Menu and is the same color of the menu you are working with.  Look again at the menu screen shot in my previous post and compare it with the following one from Studio 9. (I had a tough time finding the same menu content to use in Studio 9.)

To show you how the Root button was handled differently in Studio 9, I have included a Submenu image that shows the root button not using a chapter number.

Please let me know if this problem can be fixed as well.  You can compare both Menu problems between Studio 9, which worked as desired, and Studio 12, which needs fixing, using the four images from my last two posts.

    Thanks for your help.

I forgot to test that, my mistake. Embarrassed Luckily I still have Studio 9 on this machine and am able to see that it is handled differently in 9.
