Audio problems in captured AVI file.

I did a quick search and couldn't find this issue discussed.

I am capturing my Hi8 tapes through my TRV38 (analog to digital conversion) via firewire into my computer.

When playing the captured clip in studio, the sound cuts out about 30 minutes before the end of the clip.

When I play the same clip in windows media player, the sound doesn't cut out.

Any suggestions to fix this issue?

Will I need to recapture the remaining 30 minutes again?

I ran into this problem a few years back, although I can't recall if it was with S10.  There was a glitch in the tape or a flash that caused the capture to lose sound.  I had to restart the capture after the glitch to get sound on the remainder of the clip.  However, in the current instance, the clip plays without any issues in windows media player and the tape shows now signs of a glitch.  The sound just cuts out mid clip.

Is there a better program to capture videos into AVI or am I better off staying with S10.

    Thanks for your help.

    Fisherman,

I need to clarify something. When you say "the sound cuts out", does it continue to capture the sound?  or are you left with the last 30 minutes of audio- free video?

Re: Audio problems in captured AVI file.

When playing the clip in S10, I am left with 30 minutes of audio free video.

When I play the clip in Windows Media Player, the sound is present.

Re: Audio problems in captured AVI file.

So the file you captured to in Studio has no audio for the last 30 mins when played back in Studio, but has audio when played in Windows Media Player? What happens when you play the captured video file in any other application?.  Nero, GOM etc?

    I don't have those players.

I do have a player called Media Player Classic that came in a K-Lite codec pac.

The movie plays with audio in this player.

    Any suggestions?

Re: Audio problems in captured AVI file.

Do you have Windows Media Player available as an application? It comes as standard with XP Pro.  Try playing the file in that.

There are other freeware players you may like to try this with as well. I have used GOM before. Try playing the file in one or more of these other players.

Another question: Has this problem occurred when you have captured any other video? If so, can you provide more information about these other problem captures?

There are some things we can try, but test your file with some alternate players first.

Yes, the file will play in Windows Media Player.

It has happened in the past but usually where there is a "glitch" in the tape or a break in the recording.  In this instance, there isn't either at that particular point in the clip.

Re: Audio problems in captured AVI file.

If you have both Integated Audio & a separate PCI slot Audio Card, you need to Disable the Integrated Audio, 'cos Studio can get confused as to which one to use. In fact if you Install an Audio Card yourself, the Installation Instruictions would recommend that. Just one possibility.

Re: Audio problems in captured AVI file.

So just to summarise my understanding so far:

You have an AVI? file captured in Studio that will play OK all the way through when played in Windows Media Player.

When that same file is opened in Studio, the last 30 mins of audio on the file doesn't play.  Is that correct so far?

If so and you take that file into edit mode in Studio, what do you see on the timeline at the point where the audio goes missing?

Re: Audio problems in captured AVI file.

I am captured the video via my Sony TRV38 camcorder.  Analong into the camcorder and firewire into the computer.

It shouldn't be a sound card issue if I am using firewire.??

Nothing wrong that I can see.

The time line has no breaks and the audio line remains unbroken.

The sound just cuts out.  It cuts out mid scene in a continuous scene of about 3 minutes.

Re: Audio problems in captured AVI file.

The really puzzling thing about this is that you have an AVI file which plays OK in other applications, but Studio doesn't play a section of the audio.

There are a lot of things - firewalls, virus scans and lots of other programs operating in the background that can interfere with a capture operation.  I've had audio and video go astray due to such interference.  I've wound up with a video file with no audio or frozen video.

What I haven't come across is an affected file that only shows the defect when played in Studio.

Why not try the capture again?  I think that might be better than trying to sort out the weird problem with the file you have now

Looking at some of the things that may have caused the audio defect, the key things when capturing in my experience are:

    1. to create a really simple environment (take out the competition);

    2. capture to a disk which is separate to the PC operating system disk;

    3. and which has been defragmented .

In order to make sure you have taken as many potential disruptors out as possible, there are two methods recommended. (Before you do either of these, turn your internet access OFF. Otherwise your PC will be vulnerable to attack.)

Method 1.  Use MSConfig (started in "Run" on XP) and turn off all background apps:  or

Method 2.  As per Towbar's post elsewhere, use Enditall to close the background apps.

Method 2 has the advantage of not requiring a restart.

Last step - disable any other network connections.

That's all I can think of at this stage.

Capturing via "Firewire" & my 1st Popt are entirely different issues. You need to respond to that Post, to rule that out.

It cuts out mid scene in a continuous scene of about 3 minutes

    Try these:

    1) Delete the Scene

    2) Lock the Video Track & Delete Audio for that Scene

    3) Lower the Audio Leveller for that Scene

After doing each of the above, see if Studio continues to Play Clip. You can reverse each action, by using "Undo".

I have one audio card..an integrated audio card.

However, I don't quite understand why an analog capture divice would interfer with a digital (firewire) capture.  I guess Pinnacle is buggier than I thought.Surprise

Presumably your TRV38 has AV to DV "Pass Thru" converter?
