S11 tip - use "Make Tape" before making a complex DV AVI file

    Idea [I] S11 tip - use "Make Tape" before making a complex DV AVI file

    A tip that could save some time when creating a DV AVI file if:

    (a) All of the source video files are DV AVI files
    (b) The chosen (by user or automatically by Studio) background render codec is DV however background rendering is turned off
    (c) There are a lot of slow-to-render video filters/effects e.g. image correction (denoiser, sharpen etc.) in the project

    In this case after completing the editing, first do a "make tape" with the output device set as "VGA display" (or if you have Pinnacle I/O hardware such as a MovieBox set that as the output). Then you can preview the project, correct any editing errors found and do the "make tape" again. When no further errors exist, do the "make file"

    The reason: Studio 11 has changed the way that it is able to do "make file" (from DV AVI sources at least) - to save on disk space for auxiliary files and also speed up the file creation process a little - Studio 11 does not bother to render auxiliary files from all the changed bits of the project. Instead, it renders "on the fly", creating no auxiliary files at all.

    However, if you were then to view the completed file, find an error and correct it - because there are no auxiliary files generated from the last "make file" Studio has to render the entire lot again! This process could be very lengthy (for example I just finished a video with extensive use of image correction/noise reduction in poorly-lit scenes - it took a whole day to render, even on a dual-core CPU!) It would have been very frustrating to have found a bad edit and had to re-render the entire project again just to correct a couple of seconds! Doing the "make tape" operation forces Studio to create all of the auxiliary files lilke prior versions did; make a change and only the auxiliary files from that changed area are deleted and have to be re-rendered.

    Would this be a good idea to do if your just going to burn a dvd?

    For me it sure does, it saves time in doing trial and error with burning.

    Richard, I am trying this now, this has always been my problem with studio since after 8.1.

    I always used to render sections of  complex project then finally stick it together but this sounds better, as time is not the problem.

    I will report back ASAP.

    +++ first report - 2hrs in +++

    It occasionally hangs but resumes where it left off after restarting (not bad...)  :)

    +++ second report - 5hrs in +++

    Ok DVD also works.... v. happy (finally)
