Would it be possible to transfer the time and date stamp during capture?

I am still shooting in non-HD on miniDV tapes.  Sometimes I shoot one tape for a particular occasion, Christmas, birthday or sporting event, while other times the tape spans several months with 10+ different dates on each tape.  With the price of terabyte hard drives falling, I am toying with the idea of keeping the captured clips on the computer.  This would allow me to easily edit and combine clips that span serval tapes over several years like a movie showing parts of a child's birthday each year over the past 15 years.  However, I want to go back to a clip and be able to determine when each part of the tape was shot without putting the tape back into the camcorder and search for each clip to determine the time and date stamp.

It would be a helpful to be able to right click on a clip and have the time and date stamp information available like it is in when the tape is in the camcorder.

Is this a possibility or am I too big of a dreamer?

Studio 11 has an option to do scene detection by shooting date and time. In the album if you select the Scenes option and hover your mouse over the scene it will show you the date and time you recorded that scene based on the time codes embedded in your recording.

I always capture using a free utility called WinDV and do the scene detection afterwards and it works fine for me.

btw, there are also plugins that will let you display those times and dates on your finished video if you so desire. Studio itself does not come with that capability.

    Great.

I have bene out of the loop for a while and need to get caught up on my home video editing.

Can you direct me to the plugins?

Is there a way to "split" that captured tape into multiple files that can be sorted and organizied or is that basically done through "scenes" that keep each captured file intact?

It's possible to re-name the files so in that respect you might be able to re-organize them in the album. You can also manually split or combine the files yourself. This is handy if, for example, you did the scene detection by video content rather than time codes. Studio can interpret a camera flash as a scene change when it actually isn't. None of these options actually splits your original captured video, that always stays intact. All that happens is the .scn file (and maybe index files) are updated to reflect your changes.

However, the program I use, WinDV, does have an option to create separate avi files as it's capturing. I never used it because I didn't have a need for it.

I don't know of any specifics on the plugins for displaying the date and time. I looked through the ones I have and it wasn't listed. Perhaps someone else can point you in the right direction.
