Yes [Y] Avid DNXHD codecs and Liquid

Mark Harvey just sent me a PM with some very exciting info about the new Avid codecs and Liquid.

I just succesfully exported video and audio from my Liquid timeline into the DNXHD codec directly inside AVID LIQUID..this could be a great workflow for anyone that has to deliver work to a finishing house, or anyone who wants to move from Liquid to other Avid products....the advantage of this is the fast import of the footage into the other Avid product...Also these codecs are available as a free download from the Avid site. Recently the DNXHD codecs added alpha support..I have to upgrade my Avid CODECS to these newer codecs, but am awaiting the end of a project...I am thinking that maybe one will be able to export with alpha from Liquid (maybe I am dreaming).

The DNXHD codecs are fantastic codecs. Once they are loaded on the system you can access DNXHD (or any other Avid format) inside both Liquid and After Effects....they are very good quality codecs....but for sure the one that I am most excited about is DNXHD.

You can download the new Avid codecs here.

It may mess Liquid's system for some.

Re: Avid DNXHD codecs and Liquid

I tried the CODECs and they didn't work for me. But my system is having some glitches anyway (it's way past time to do a rebuild) so it may be just that.

Just to update, I installed the CODECs on a second Liquid system, and I'm still unable to export. Could you please describe the procedure you used to make it work for you?

Re: Avid DNXHD codecs and Liquid

Works great here, both on the Xp and the V64 sys.

Having some probs with that the settings will go back to ntsc 220 although I had choosed pal 185 for my preset, I have to go into advanced and change to pal and save the preset for each time I will make a new export.

The changes are made from export as quicktime, modify preset, change the aspects to 1920 1080 and then go into advanced and choose the avid DnxHd codec, inthe bottom is a pulldown list given you the possibilities to choose the correct codec, the one at the top is the ntsc 220 codec and although I choose the pal 185 codec for my preset, when I go back and will make a new export, the 220 ntsc is choosen, I have to manually change it each time, no big deal as soon as you know about it.

The file created, according to gspot, is a 185 mbps mov file as in the preset and the quality is really nice

Re: Avid DNXHD codecs and Liquid

I have two systems running, one is a Laptop with Liquid 7.2, the other is my workstation with Chrome Xe. Only with Chrome Xe I can select the DNxHD codecs when exporting to Quicktime. Liquid 7.2 has a different interface to Quicktime and does not allow for a selection of different codecs - at least I did not find any way to do it.

With my Chrome Xe system I use this feature to export material for import into Media Composer, and it works very well. The only problem is, that you can only export one video clip at a time, as Chrome Xe crashes with every further export to Quicktime (I use QT 7.4.1 which is not certified for Liquid).

This is a bug, I have the same probs with liquid pro 7,2 on all sys and QT 7,4,1

I have tried with QT 7,2 and get the same results, one file and then restart liquid to be able to export a new file, this happens even if I open up a new project, I have to first shut down liquid and then open up the new project

My settings are similar except I use 29.97 and 59.94 instead of 25 and 50. And it still doesn't work for me.

It never renders into the ,MOV file (the file exists but is empty).

Is the file zero bytes or has it been written to?

Did you see the previewing in the export window, was liquid writing to the file?

Try to close down liquid and play the file if it isn´t zero bytes.

Re: Avid DNXHD codecs and Liquid

It's zero bytes long. The export dialogs simply closes after I put in the file name. I'm going to try some experiments with 25fps timelines and see if they work for me using your exact settings.

Not Yet. I haven't tried a clean system and Liquid install yet. I need to free up a drive for that.

Once they are installed, they show up as a codec inside the quicktime export dialog.

Re: Avid DNXHD codecs and Liquid

    Dave,

I exported with the DNX codec successfully the first time and played the file in QT.  On the second test, when I clicked OK on the first export dialog (for preset choice), Liquid crashed to the desktop.  On the third test, it exported again just like the first time and played in QT.  Trying a fourth test did the same as earlier - crash to the desktop.  Whether it's a second export in the same Liquid session or exporting again after playing in QT that causes the crash, I don't know yet.

This was using the factory 16:9 codec and choosing the codec on the second dialog, not making a custom preset.  The sequence was HDV 1080/59.94i.  The installed QT was 6.5.1 (the default Liquid install).  I was using my Vista laptop for those tests.  More later when I've tried a few other things.

Re: Avid DNXHD codecs and Liquid

Uninstalling the Avid codecs fixed the second export crash on both my Vista and XP systems.  There was no difference bertween QT 6.5.1 and either 7.4 or 7.4.1 - the crash on the second export attempt happened each way as long as the Avid codec package was installed.

Yes, Scott, this is what happens, both Joachim, in Chrome, and myself, have noticed this as written in the beginning of this thread, some kind of bug or what you might call it, the codec was never designed for use with liquid.

However, it works the first time and works nice, there is no need to do this export from a standard 25 mbps hd timeline I think, just  to get files out from liquid uncompressed hd that is possible to work with in other applications.
