Idea [I] Writing Final File Hang - Vista tip/Studio 11

I have mentioned this before in passing, but if you are running Vista and are having issues during "Writing final file" during Make Movie...

    1. Open Task Manager
    2. Click Performance tab and then click on Resource Monitor
    3. Click on disk and then click on "write" to sort the column with the process that is writing the most bytes at the top.

If Studio is not listed at or near the top of the list, it is no longer writing the file to disc. That confirms that it is hung up.  Click cancel and exit Studio.

My workaround is to disable the file indexer (control panel>Indexing Options). Click MODIFY and uncheck all options. Click OK to close control panel. Relaunch Studio and open your project.  Ensure "always reencode movie" is NOT checked. Go to make movie and start the process again. For me,in most cases, Studio picks up with "writing final file" and then completes it successfully. When I remember, I make a habit out of doing this even before final encoding.

    Hi Mark,

I've been running into this as well.  Either studio will hang up as you describe, or stop one frame before the end.  I just kill studio using task manager, wait for the watch program to throw up the unexpected error dialogue, close it, then rerun studio.  Continue project, Make move, and continue.  It seems to consistently write the second time.  I haven't had to mess around with indexing.

I'm running XP and had hangs on final file write.  I have an NVIDIA 8600 GTS.   I went to the nvidia site, downloaded the latest driver and the hangs have gone away.

Re: Writing Final File Hang - Vista tip/Studio 11

    Hello:

Studio 11 Ultimate but with Windows XP Pro,  Video card ATI X1950 Pro 512 MB (latest driver 8.6), 2 hours video always hang with the "Writing Final File", does anybody had similar problem and solution?

I already tried to kill Studio using the Task Manager and continue the project with no luck.

The only solution I have so far is to create and AVI files, but I still will prefer to use the regular option.

    Any hint will be appreciated.

    Thank you

Re: Writing Final File Hang - Vista tip/Studio 11

I am running Studio 12 Ultimate under XP Pro SP3 on a new Q9550 / 4gb RAM / 500gb SATA / nVidia 8600GT rig (and what a difference the quad processor with 12mb cache and SSE 4 makes in Studio!).  I had the same situation - Imported from DV and created 2 hr video with a 4 chapter menu having motion thumbnails.  It hangs at "Writing final file".  I rebooted, rendered again with the same result.

     Here's what I did:

    1) Changed my swap file setting (Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced Tab > Performance section, Settings button > Advanced tab, Virtual memory section) to System Managed

    2) Downloaded and installed the Studio 12.1 patch

    3) Downloaded and installed the newest nVidia driver for my 8600GT

Rebooted and restarted Studio.  Rendering worked successfully.  I'm crossing my fingers that the hanging problem is resolved.

Studio 12 is a great upgrade from my old Studio 9.4, and the new hardware makes using the program with large video projects much more bearable.  I highly recommend stretching for a Quad with SSE4 - your time is worth it!

Re: Writing Final File Hang - Vista tip/Studio 11

Thanks for all your tips guys, unfortunately they do not work for me. Here's what I get with 12.1 and WinXP SP3

    • 2.5 hr movie with 70 chapters and one stock menu
    • It renders all the clips and then hangs on "Writing Final File" It manages to write about 128-500Mb of the first file in the VIDEO_TS folder
    • Canceling the operation sometimes results in a crash, other times it quits gracefully.
    • If I take the menu out the operation completes successfully. But of course, one can have no chapters without menus!
    • So, I put the menu back in - hangs on Writing Final File
    • This has hapened many times. 5 times with this movie and twice with other movies in the past. I have never been able to create a menu'ed DVD folder with version 12.

Pinnacle, I have wasted 4 days playing around with this. I have used Studio since version 6, and purchased 5 versions along the way. I have had to downloaded Sony Vegas, and I will try the movie there. I urge you to do a search on the forums. There are many people having this problem. Please address it. You have the cleanest, most intuitive interface in the business. Your program is an absolut joy to use, please do not alienate your customers by not addressing this issue.

Re: Writing Final File Hang - Vista tip/Studio 11

    I also have 12.1 with WinXP SP3.

I've been having the same writing final file problems the past few days with a video of a two hour ballroom dance recital with 30 chapters. The project is overdue  I have been doing a lot of troubleshooting with info from this forum and the knowledgebase.   I had saved the project at various points along the way.  So I worked backwards on it.

I believe now that the project somehow got corrupted beyond repair. I have spent so much time on this problem that I could have redone the whole thing over.

I am going to start over and take it one step at a time.  I would switch to Sony Vegas but don't want to learn new software.

The bright side is that I have learned a lot about how this software works.  I just wish it had better error reporting/logging and error recovery features.

mwilli20,  how is your experience since last Wednesday?
