instead of making a video with a menu on a dvd i thought i would try just making a video to play on the 12 year old TV.

Which gives me zero informations about their resolutions. and the format of the project that you are willing to export.

everything is 1920 x 1080.

Your best option, if your goal is to view it on a TV, is Mpeg2, HD 1080i preset.
