Player window problem after trying to downgrade to PS14

I installed PS21 on my old Windows 7 machine, but then I wanted to move it to my new machine, and I also wanted to go back to Studio 14 Ultimate to finish off some old projects (I made ~100 DVDs of my kids, and I have raw video to make 1-2 more, and I want them to look the same: menus, titles, etc. which is difficult to do with a newer version of Studio).

PS14 was still installed, but it gave me some weird errors (IRQ?) when I tried to run it. So, I uninstalled PS21 (and PS20), and tried to repair PS14. I ended up having to uninstall it and reinstall it. Now it starts up fine, opens my project files and shows the thumbnails of all the clips, but I can't get anything to play in the player window: not the thumbnails, not from the timeline. Since it's Win7, I am reluctant to connect it to the internet, but from other threads, it seems like I should look into updating my video drivers and/or DirectX. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Check to see if you have any activation keys on PS14.

Help / View activation keys gives me

    Studio 14 Passport 00050-....

    Activation Keys

    MPEG-4 Encoding/Decoding LAFSC-...

(not sure I should post the whole key)

Re: Player window problem after trying to downgrade to PS14

I have an ATI Radeon HD6670 video card. dxdiag says I'm using DirectX 11, and "no problems detected." The ATI Catalyst control center says there are no updates available.

So this means that it's not a missing activation key issue.

Is that the only set of keys you have. I think that there should be at least 4 keys.

Yes, that's all I see. I tried Help/regenerate keys, but that just brought up an ad for Studio 23.

If some keys were missing to display the video, a dialog box would open up suggesting to regenerate them.

Saby, do you have another suggestion, if it's not missing keys? Thanks.

Re: Player window problem after trying to downgrade to PS14

It won't play .mpg files (like the Our Nature Adventure sample) nor the .avi files I imported from my DV camcorder. But I can see thumbnails of all the scenes in these files.

Yes. Let's suppose that I am wrong => send any moderator a private message with your PS14 passport # and registration email address. We will ask Corel to regenerate a full set of keys for you.

Send a PM to a moderator with your registered email and passport number so you can get the activation keys needed.

Re: Player window problem after trying to downgrade to PS14

So, Saby's suspicion was correct: he got me the new activation keys, but that wasn't the problem. The keys were accepted (I got dialog boxes about features being unlocked), but the player window still doesn't play.

I suspect my registry may be damaged from installing/uninstalling/repairing PS14, 20, and 21 to try to resolve this. One further issue is that now, when I start PS14, I get a UAC dialog asking if I want to allow C:\Windows\Installer\90930.msi to make changes to this computer. Clicking the more details button shows it's from Pinnacle Systems. I've tried clicking yes and (the next time) clicking no, and it keeps coming up.

I guess a complete unistallation/reinstallation of PS14, including Registery cleaning is necessary.

After uninstallation, run Regdelete to clean the Registery. Then, reinstall.

If you have a spare HDD I would suggest to swap it with your c drive, disconnect all HDD you have available and make a fresh install of either W7, W8 or W10 and just install PS14 to see if your problem is solved. If not just swap your HDD again and your back as normal.

Try Saby suggestion first to see if you may have better results.

You may want to use revo uninstaller to remove all PS files or you may need to remove them manually from c drive, which may take you a few minutes if done correctly.

Re: Player window problem after trying to downgrade to PS14

I'm having a little trouble finding Regdelete. First did a google search, but then searched this forum, and found a number of broken links. I finally found

    https://support.corel.com/hc/en-us/articles/216091168-1722-error-on-install-of-Studio-

which is for PS21. Will that work, or do I need a Regdelete specific to PS14?

File in attachement. Remove the .txt extension and run it.

Thanks. I have to boot up the old computer and let the uninstaller run first. I'll post back later.

Re: Player window problem after trying to downgrade to PS14

Oh, hooray! I can edit in PS14 again! Thank you, saby!

I had a little trouble, though. First, I uninstalled PS20 (which I had installed in my random attempts to get something to work). Then I tried to uninstall PS14, but I got an error: Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel.

... which is odd, because I was using Add/Remove Programs.

Then I ran RegDelete, still couldn't uninstall PS14, nor could I re-install it (when I tried to run setup from the install CD, I got an error that the program was already installed) so I ran RegEdit and manually searched for Corel (there was still some PS20 stuff) and Pinnacle, as well as the 90930.msi installer that was stuck somehow. I also ran RegDelete for PS14 and for PS21. And finally I was able to reinstall PS14, and the player window worked.

I'm not sure what the key step was.
