    ShowCenter 200 n00b

    Hi all

just bought one of these boxes second hand.  Unfortunately it came with no software.  Been reading the manual and without the software it's just a brick.  I'd like to get it going but have no idea where to start; can anyone advise please?

Not knowing what your home network looks like, first thing to suggest might be SwissCenter, and see where we go from there.

Alternatively, Windows Media Center can be set up to act as a UPnP server, and the beta firmware for the SC200 can kinda-sort access it.

I'm a linux user here so will try SwissCenter.

    Many thanks.

Ahhh...if you're a Linux user, you might also want to evaluate MTPCenter.  I think that SwissCenter has most of the mindshare nowadays, but MTPCenter's Streaming Server is a nice addition (lets you pick up shows where you left off, that sort of thing, plus at least before the most recent Beta firmware, the Showcenter couldn't handle variable-bitrate mp3s gracefully so the Streaming Server helped with that as well).  It's what I use.

Also, UPnP servers, e.g. MediaTomb, do work when coupled with the Beta firmware.

Switched on the SC200, but it didn't work.  Not much output from the PSU.  Changed out those pesky 1000uF/6.3v caps, switched on and measured 5.0v on load.  Neither of the caps had bulged or leaked, must have just dried out.

There were 4 black and white horizontal bars on the picture, could only get a readable picture with SCART NTSC option, even then half the options on the screen were missing.   Everything else seemed to be working so upgraded the firmware to  21-81-071113-03-PIN-230-000 and it all came good; the video is perfect on SCART PAL.  (How did the previous owner manage to screw up the firmware?).

Got Swisscenter working on Ubuntu 9.10 on an old PIII 933MHz 512MB box.  Can stream .mp3 and .avi from the server via a 802.11b AP.  Shoutcast radio also works. It won't display photos for some reason.

Selecting menu options on the SC200 feels sluggish.  Do you think the server hardware is ridiculously underpowered?

I'll have a go with MTP server; tnx for the tip.

    Re: ShowCenter 200 n00b

Underpowered? Yes. Ridiculously so?  No...it works well enough (IMO) on my 700MHz AMD Athlon Classic, which is definitely slower than the PIII you're using.  Now, the client hardware could be considered ridiculously underpowered, but that's another story...Stick out tongue

And I wouldn't bother with 802.11b.  I don't find that 802.11g is even worthwhile -- I pulled an Ethernet drop to my entertainment stack because I found that wireless performance was so poor.
