    1) DVDs burned from projects containing return flags at chapter ends are not recognized by many old DVD players.

    2) Program often appears to freeze for fairly long periods for no apparent reason, then comes back to life.

Hmmmm.  Interesting.  I had this happen several times during the past week and shut down/restarted under the assumption that the program actually had frozen.  Maybe I need to wait longer.  At least a couple of times it was when I selected a thumbnail for a menu (inadvertently) before the menu chapter was set.

    Re: S14 bugs list

Next time the program appears to freeze, try this. Open the Windows Task Manager, crtl+alt+del. If the cpu usage is at or near 100%, select the processes tab, click on the cpu title once or twice until the highest numbers are at the top. This will tell you what is using the processor time.

If you aren't familiar with the process that is running, usually you can find it by putting the title into Google.

I was having problems where Studio would freeze and not come back. This was happening too frequently. Support had me disable all Startup programs from msconfig.exe, and that has gotten rid of that problem over the last several days I have been using Studio.

CPU usage is typically low when this occurs.

    Re: S14 bugs list

I have two problems with Studio 14.  I have the program to freeze up and will not come back.  I use a little program called "End It All" which kills all unneccessary programs, and it still freezes from time to time.  Also, the video in the preview window will disappear and nothing I can do unles I close the program out, and restrart it.

Otherwise, its one of the all time great programs..........

    Re: S14 bugs list

Same two problems for me.  I had forgotten about enditall.  I used to use it regularly with Studio 7 and prior.

On the freezing problems, occasionally I can wait 5 minutes or so (and thats a REALLY long time for a program to stabalize) and it will return.  I then save/restart anyway for fear that something ain't right.  Also, I have found in the majority of cases if I restart before the program recovers I haven't lost much if I use the "continue" option when S14 reloads.

As with a previous post - CPU and memory use is typically low (as evidenced by Task Manager).  I haven't used msconfig to remove startup programs.  Maybe that'll help.

On the video preview being lost, I usually can get it back if I preview some other S14 function, like the switching to a thumbnail at the upper left portion of the screen or switching from timeline mode to video clip mode.  Once I getvideoon somethingelse, I normally can continue okay.

These are workarounds, though.  Not fixes.  These are still bugs that need fixes.

    Re: S14 bugs list

I agree that these are workarounds, not fixes.  I did, however, check the high resoloution preview and since then have not lost the preview window.  Perhaps that is the key.  I use HD video and of course, it takes a while to load, to render, and even to move from edit to make movie.  but the last 10 or 12 refinements I have made on a travel video it has worked perfect, if I let it render fully before asking it to make the disc..............

    Re: S14 bugs list

    Hi folks,

I am considering a version 14 upgrade with the hopes of fixing some issues with v12.  The biggest issue I have in v12 is when it sometimes hangs during the "writing final file."  The issue has always been hit or miss.  But when it hits, it hurts, and sets me back time-wise a great deal, and unmentionable frustration.

Many of you have been using v14 for 6 to 8 months now.  Has stability improved from v11 and v12 to the newest v14? Has anyone experienced the "writing final file" hang during the render/disc burning process?  Are there any new bugs that need mentioning?

     Do you recommend the upgrade?

    Your comments are appreciated.

    Thanks,

    You're right David.

In fact, as some may already knwow, as explained by Déclic-Vidéo here, a page dedicated to bugs of Studio and its future improvements are on Déclic web site's.

These bugs are being discussed by some French users in this thread.

When I wrote this topic, 2 months ago, I intend to copy and translate the French thread here. This way the French discussion could be continued in parallel here.

But I gave up this idea. Meanwhile, some of you have written posts in this topic. That's why I've not deleted it even if it has become useless.

    Greg recently mentioned this:

...a problem that many others have found - S14 won't burn to DL discs.  Super Angry  You can check out some other threads here and here.

That sounds patch-worthy to me.  It works in previous versions.

My opinion - and that's all that it is - is that you will not find more joy in S14.

I have had every version of Studio since 7, and I have found that it has gotten significantly better in both functionality and stability through the years with each successive new version.  However, PCLE does have a habit of releasing a version that still needs work before perfected.  As this thread testifies, S14 still has a few bugs, as did (does) previous versions.

But the real answer to your question depends on how rich you are and how much you do video editing using Studio.  Also, HD editing has improved with the later versions and I think 14 is the first version with the "Importer" fuction, which is a different way to bring your video files into the program.  I haven't found much to complain about with Importer, but some on this forum think it is a step backwards.  I think they are just malcontents (sorry).

Bottom line is that if you are expecting perfection you will be disappointed, but the software IMHO is the best for the money for what it does and if you do a lot of editing or have $100 or so of disposable income w/o any other toys competing, then go for it.

Guessing that means that you haven't lost any functionality in your workflow.  Others have.   Examples:  Loss of timed analog capture capability, loss of firewire capture on external USB devices, dropped support for your capture hardware altogether, that sort of thing.

    Re: S14 bugs list

The new importer section has been a real showstopper. Loss of timed capture, as well as the time lag upon opening, are both unsatisfactory to me. I decided to stop using the version early on, and will might start using the version again if these things are important enough to fix.

If any of you capture analogue as much as I do, then you will probably understand where I'm coming from.

Since the timed capture was intentionally omitted from S14, I guess you really couldn't call it a bug per se. But since this really bugs me, I thought I would put it on the list.

    Re: S14 bugs list

I too find the timed capture option very important even though I only do digital capture.

I store my capture files by shooting date.  I could let studio create 'scenes' based upon shooting time/date, but it is still one file covering multiple time periods.  The reason I capture by date is that I get files from my in-laws and my daughter as well as those I take myself.  Without timed capture, I would go blind watching every second of the capture to do a stop/start on a date change.

Unless someone can tell me another way to capture 'files' by date.

    [aside]

Standard-def DV?  Maybe WinDV  could help if you set the discontinuity threshold to something reasonable (like 4 hours).

Your way is more accurate, but maybe WinDV could be useful in some situations.

For me it is HD from Canon HV20.  1440x1080.

I am using the timed capture in Studio 12, works ok.  Have not yet moved to Studio 14 but for more reasons than just the lack of timed capture.

    Re: S14 bugs list

First - I need to apologize for the use of "malcontents."  Poor choice of words.  I started to edit it out but editing after replies have been posted "bugs" me and sometines makes subsequent replies not relevant.

Guessing that means that you haven't lost any functionality in your workflow.  Others have.   Examples:  Loss of timed analog capture capability, loss of firewire capture on external USB devices, dropped support for your capture hardware altogether, that sort of thing.
Bittmann is right (of course).  Or at least I generally agree with him.  The point of the matter is that your love/hate of any function of any software is whether you use it and whether it helps/hurts the functionality that you need.  In my case, I haven't tried the timed analog capture but it seems like a good idea if you capture much analog.  I do some and may use S12 to invoke that function (I have S12/14 concurrently installed).  Likewise, with the rapid advance of technology, I no longer use firewire capture - though it used to be my primary way of getting video into Studio.  I now transfer AVCHD video from my SD card and standard def or analog from DVD.  The support for DVD-RAM is great with Importer, and wasn't always there with Studio (a previous complaint of mine).  I wasn't aware that some previously supported capture hardware was dropped - that's bad.

So I guess which version you have (with or w/o Importer) really does depend on what hardware and functionality you have/need/use/prefer.  Having the luxury of several versions on hand (only 12&14 currently installed) does help with my objectivity.  But my opinion that upgrading from 12 -> 14 won't help the average user still holds.  IMHO they are both the best for the money, but if you are expecting to move from good to perfect you are likely to be disappointed.
