    Trouble using NAS

    Hi all,

i try a Thecus-5200 NAS storage.  Did someone try Liquid with NAS ?

    This is my problem :

1 - make a new project on the NAS storage folder

    2 - make a title (F12)

3 - inserting it in sequence and apply a crossdissolve using the tool

it is all ok until i close Liquid. Open Liquid again, move the title on sequence and reinsert a crossdissolve with the tool. The result is a dark red slice only in correspondence of the crossdissolve and the crossdissolve icon on the title is changed to a default one. Clicking on it have no effect.

Then i try with other 2 NAS storages like Thecus 2100 and 4100 with the same result.

At last, i make a new NAS using a normal PC with Openfiler (free linux NAS). Same result.

    Re: Trouble using NAS

I believe that Thecus uses LINUX (or BSD) and one (or more) of the Linux based file systems. It could be that Liquid has issues when trying to manipulate media on non-windows files. Try sharing a windows drive from another system and see if that works.

    Re: Trouble using NAS

Yes, it works. Since many year i use a XP Server with Raid 5. But i wish to have a system like the Thecus NAS.

The problem appear only if i put the automatic crossdissolve on a title !!! If i use the crossdissolve by drag'n drop it then all is ok.

If i export a BMP file with TDK and import it then no problem occurs. But in this way it is impossible to modify the title later.

    Ciao

That doesn't make any sense. Liquid doesn't do anything special with the media for cross dissolve depending on whether or not you drag-and-drop. Also, what you mean by "automatic"? Are you setting the mark-in and mark-out and applying the cross dissolve to all transitions in the region?

    Re: Trouble using NAS

    I explain with a 1-10 step:

    1 - create a title with TDK (F2)

    2 - save it to Liquid (F11)

3 - move the title into sequence

4 - apply the crossdissolve using the dedicated key on the keyboard (italian is the 'à' key) or the crossdissolve tool on the toolbar

    5 -  exit liquid

    6 - open liquid again

7 - move the title in sequence or create another one and put it on sequence

8 -  apply the crossdissolve again

9 - dark red slice appears in corrispondence of the crossdissolve

After this trouble it is also impossible to assign a custom transition FX as DVE default. An error massage appear telling that 'it is "impossible to write on SYS".

But if i drag and drop the crossdissolve manually from the library than it is all ok.

All this only with a NAS configured with Raid 1/5/10. If i try with Jbod, Raid0 or iSCSI then all is OK. I also try using one of my Ubuntu Linux system with a single system disk and have no trouble.

I'm ripping my hair from the nervous. And the same problem trying with Openfiler (free NAS system). Tomorrow i try with Jbod and Raid0 on Openfiler and let u know.

If you wish i can make same screenshots.

    Re: Trouble using NAS

It's beginning to sound like it's a disk writeback error, but I can't see why that would be only for the workflow you described. I don't have a NAS, but I can install Linux on a box and see if I can replicate this. I'll see what I can do. But probably not before next Monday with my current schedule.

    Re: Trouble using NAS

Thank you very much for intersting. I can wait monday. Tomorrow i will try with openfiler in Jbod and Raid0 mode. The models of Thecus i try where 2100, 4100 and 5200 Pro. I don't know what kind of filesystem does the Thecus use. XFS or Ext3 ? With Openfiler i try with XFS.

With disk writeback error do you mean that one of the disks in Raid5 can be faulty or it is simply the cachewritebehind option (if enabled).

    Re: Trouble using NAS

It would be the cachewritebehind. But if this were really the case, I think you'd see this problem with every transition. Something very odd is going on.

Just for grins, try re-installing Liquid over itself (don't delete anything, just re-install Liquid 7.2.1). It might be that your installation is somehow corrupt (I'm not expecting this to work, but it won't hurt and might help).

    Re: Trouble using NAS

Weird the problem only comes up when you configure as Raid 1, 5 or 10, and not with JBOD or Raid 0. This should really make no difference for Liquid as Liquid. it will just write or read data, no matter what the setup is.
If you get the red slice and play back an exclamation makr should come up in Liquid. Click it and see what Liquid reports. Maybe this will give us some clues.

    Re: Trouble using NAS

    Hi,

i take up this topic because i have a similar problem backing up on a linux machine my reels. Here what happen

First of all this happen with samba and FTP ( i prefer this last method because transfer is very faster).

if I tranfer the files from the linux server to liquid media directory and to liquid the project directory directly  liquid hangs

If I transfer the media directory and the project directory  to a temporary directory on the workstation and after copy them in their respective directories (the cut command don't work) liquid open the project in a very fine way

Why it happen? Is not a hardware problem I tested it also creating virtual machine with different linux distro. Is a problem with linux and liquid ? Will Next gen have a better use of linux based nases (liquid is born when Nases weren't used so I can understand this problem) but now would be nice a support of it

    Just my two cent

    Ugo

    Re: Trouble using NAS

    Hi,

I forget to tell that i solved the problem. I don't no why but the problem is the size of Raid partition. One day i try with only 3 HD's in Raid 5 and create a 10 GByte partition where i store only  the projects. All work fine. Then i format all again and try with 5 HD's in Raid 5. I create a 10GB partition again and... i got the problem again. So i think, and hope, that the problem is Samba/Linux or a Bug and so on. Then i try with a partition of 12 GB and... all will work.

There is a problem with the partition size but i don't now why. Actually i work fine with Openfiler, have 7 HD's (500GBx7) in Raid 5 with a partition of 14 GB. To solve it i simple try different sizes and stop at the working one. In this case 14 GB. At last i try with 3 HD's Raid5 again with a 14GB partition... don't work !!!!

    Hi

seem I also solved the problem using the in-build ftp windows program instead of  external program like filezilla, cute ftp and smartftp that's strange. the mentioned programs didn't corrupt any file (md5sum hashing file check made). I'm doing a final test finger crossed.
