No preview video when editing movie

Greetings. Before I tell you all about my plight, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jason and I've recently gotten into the habit of making video game montages, so to speak. Thanks to the help of this handy little device called a Hauppauge HD PVR, I can create my videos in high-res HD.

Now here's the problem I'm having. Sometimes when I'm editing my video, there's no video for me to preview. I took at a look at a thread from a few months back about a user having a similar problem, and he was told that the footage just needs to be rendered. Is that right? And if it is, is there a way I can accelerate the rendering process, since most of my raw footage ends up being several hundred MBs?

What shows up in the preview screen? any symbol at all or just blank? It could take  30 secs per one MB to render depending on how fast your computer is and what else is running in the background.

Preview window turning black during editing is something I am seeing here many times a day.
I didn't yet manage to pin down what is triggering it.
As far as I can see it hasn't anything to do with (backgrpund)rendering.
It happens on Win 7 as wel as on Win XP.
Only way to get rid of it is shutting down S14, relaunch it and re-open the project.
.... unfortunately, it happens more often then not that few minutes later, preview turns black again.....

I feel like it has to do with videoboard/driver.
NVidia GeForce 8800GTS 512mb DDR2 running on driver version 191.07

I had this problem and simply clicking on the  timeline brings the preview window back.

I have also had this problem and clicking on 'story book' view and then back to 'timeline' view caused the screen to re-write and was ok. For some unknown reason, this problem has disappeared.
