    HDV Codec question

Which codec should I see on the LE 7.2 Pro system tab for HDV capture from a Canon camcorder?

I am probably missing something obvious, but when I try to capture HDV from a Canon HV20 (via BOB IEEE terminal), when I end the capture, I get a missing codec error.

    Re: HDV Codec question

It should be the "MP@HL14 (4.2.0)" mpeg codec. Liquid should automatically switch to this codec when it sees your HDV camera.

    Re: HDV Codec question

I don't think I could use the BoB for HD from my HV20...go directly into the computer via firewire and I think you will have joy.

    Re: HDV Codec question

I have tested the FW port on the BOB with my FX1 in HDV mode and it worked fine but I agree, use a port on the computer and see if that resloves it. Others have reported problems with using the BOB port for HDV.

    Thanks all.

Capture from XH-A1 worked to the motherboard IEEE port.  Will check the BOB port tonight, and take a closer look at the HV-20 configuration.

Make sure on the HV20 that the output format is NOT set to AUTO in the menu. It must be locked in HDV to work correctly according to other forum members with that camera.

    Re: HDV Codec question

Turns out there are two menu settings on the HV-20,  PLAYBACK STD [DV or HDV or AUTO], and DV OUTPUT [DVLocked or HDV/DV].  And the setting changes cannot be made while the camcorder is connected. This may have been the source of my difficulty. Will find out tonight.

    Re: HDV Codec question

Playback standard controls what will play back at all. If set for DV and you have an HDV clip, then the HDV clip will not be output (and vice versa). DV Output controls what goes out on the firewire. If it's set for HDV/DV and you have a DV clip, then the output will fail as it has to switch on-the-fly, and Liquid will mis-read the output. If it's set for DV Locked, then HDV will be downconverted to DV, and DV will output normally.

I never mix CODECs on a tape, so I set Playback Standard to match the tape rather than use automatic, and I set DV Locked if I want a DV clip (regardless of tape format).

    Re: HDV Codec question

With the corrected camcorder settings I was able to capture HDV from the HV20 via the BOB IEEE connection.

    Thanks for the responses.

    Re: HDV Codec question

Liquid seems happy to be informed via the Liquid Control Panel, that the Device is a Canon rather than the < (I think default - Sony).  I use both Sony and Canon and have this to be the case.
