To render or not to render while editing?

To render or not to render while editing?

It would be nice if there was a button to switch on or off background rendering on the timeline. If there is I missed it in S14.

This has come up several times before. Here is a link to one request thread. Soon it will rival "more video/audio tracks" as a most-requested feature.
