Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12
I'm loath to give any advice that might make things worse. Given that this is virtually a brand new system, I'd ask the guys who sold it to you about restoring it the the original state it arrived in and starting then again. This may have been caused by the partial install of S10.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12
VideoMike123:
Something weird's happened.
I did as you said and then tried installing S12 but although the DVD drive light came on and you could hear it spinning nothing happened. I went to 'Computer' to open the programme from there and the DVD wasn't shown at all. I checked Device Manager and it was shown there so I checked the driver for it and that showed as the latest but it still doesn't seem to be working properly.
I've tried resetting Autoplay and restarting the PC twice but it makes no difference. Nothing will work in the DVD drive.
If S10's been Installed/Partially Installed & you didn't do a Custom Install; choosing not to install InstantDVD Recorder, you might have one of your original Problems Posted with your XP PC,
My Posts re; that refer. Ie, InstantDVD Recorder can lock your DVD Drive, amongst other things (Putting it simply).
Check ADD/REMOVE Programs & Remove it, if it shows. Also Remove MediaManager/Server, if that shows.
I removed the Pinnacle/Studio folder
Remove it from ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, if it shows.
I have found a message on the Device Manager which may be relevant and I've shown it below
I'm double-checking that, now.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12
When I checked my list of programmes this morning I saw a group under 'Studio 10', but when I went to remove them in add/remove programmes the only thing then showing was Pinnacle Media Manager. I clicked on it and it asked if I wanted to uninstall that 'Folder'. I was a bit surprised it was referred to as a folder rtaher than a programme but I uninstalled it. After that none of the Pinnacle/Studio items were shown in Programmes and I haven't been able to find anyhting else relating to Pinnacle/Studio/Instamt DVD Recorder etc. in either Programmes or add/remove programmes but it has been since removing Media Manager that the DVD won't work. I've looked again in Device Manager and now seen that there are 3 drivers listed for the DVD writer, two of which are shown with a black box against them. One of these has Pinnacle GMBH against it - see below. Is it possible to remove just that one? I haven't tried clicking on Uninstall driver as I thought it might remove all 3. If it did, could I then get it to search for the right driver again? Alternatively, could I use the W7 SP1 disc that came with the computer to correct the problem? It says it's External Recovery Media. I'm loathe to contact PC Specialist if I can avoid it because I've not had good experience of their communications and admin.

My DVD-RW Drive is the same Driver Version.
The Driver Provider is Microsoft.
Pinnacle GMBH
Looks like & confirms Pinnacle InstantDVD Recorder has taken control of your DVD-RW Drive. You must have done an S10 Typical, rather than Custom Install.
I'd be inclined to Uninstall the Driver & then Re-Install it, via Device Manager Uninstall/Re-Install Buttons & then see what happens.
It's best that you get your PC Expert acquaintance to do it, since he's on the spot & I am not & don't want to jeapordise your new PC. .
S10 came in different versions & flavo(u)rs. One of them being MediaSuite, that included MediaManager & InstantDVD Recorder amongst other things, that caused numerous problems. Which Version do you have. It should be on the Program Disk.
IMO, this isn't a PCSpecialist Problem, but an Instant DVD Recorder Problem - somewhere.
MediaManager also came with MSSQL Server. Check ADD/REMOVE Programs, to see if that's showing.
Alternatively, could I use the W7 SP1 disc that came with the computer to correct the problem?
No.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12
1. My Studio 10 Plus is the Titanium Edition. I don't recall selecting the full install when I put the disk in, I think it just tried to install automatically.
2. I couldn't find any trace of MSSQL when I searched add/remove programmes
3. Luckily my neighbour was in as he is away a lot. He recommended uninstalling the driver and rebooting the PC which he believed would reinstate the correct driver but that didn't work. It reinstalled all 3 drivesr again. He then spent about 2 hours trying many things including tracing the faulty driver and removing it which didn't work either. He then found MSSQL in the 32 Bit programmes (my searches had automaticvally been in the 64 bit ones), but removing that too didn't seem to resolve the problem. In those programmes he also found more Studio ones which we deleted without success. After many different attempts, including using the W7 SP1 disk, which also didn't work, I finally suggested turning the clock back to a restore point 3 days ago before I started downloading Studio - and that seems to have worked; at least my DVD drive is showing in Computer again. It's late now so I'll have another go at installing S12 Ultimate tomorrow. Please keep your fingers crossed.

1) Glad System Restore eventually Fixed it & also further confirms the problem was caused by InstantDVD Recorder.
2) If you have S12 Ultimate that has 1 Program DVD & 1 3RD Party Plugins CD, the Plugins CD has it's own Installer & can be Installed at a later date. (You don't need them for Running S12 & they can be problematical, anyway).
3) If you have S12.1 Upgrade, there's no need to Update to S12.1. If you have S12.0 Upgrade, there's no .need to Update to S12.1 for your particular Workflow.
4) See if you can get your PC Expert acquaintance to Install S12 for you.
BTW - W7 has Windows Desktop Aero Theme by DEfault, that can cause Editing Problems. Select W7 Basic Theme instead.
Good luck

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12
GRRRR!!! It still won't work! Despite setting Autoplay to take no action (it was previously set to 'Ask me every time') I still don't get the registration page for S10 when I insert that disk whilst pressing Shift. I got the same message as before - a) 'Run Welcome.exe. or b) 'Open Folder to view Files. I tried the latter but coudn't see anything which might bring up the registration page and I obviously hesitate to click on anything with an '.exe'
I don't know if it's relevant but when you're told to install the S10 disk using shift (whilst the S12 disk is inserted) the dialogue box gives 2 alternatives - OK or CANCEL. If I click on OK the box flashes but it doesn't disappear. It doesn't matter if I click on it before I take out the S12 disk, before I insert the S10 disk, or after it inserted, it still doesn't disappear, and it's still there when I take out the S10 disk. Clicking on Cancel does take me back to an exit box so the mouse seems to be working. The only other thing I wonder about is that for a long time I've had wireless keyboards and mice and there have been times when either my neighbour or my son have tried doing things to the computer and the keyboard or mouse haven't always worked, although that's been when they're trying to do somehting with the operating system. Last night the mouse wouldn't work when my neighbour tried to do something, but when we plugged in a wired mouse that didn't work either and I've confirmed that there's no problem with that mouse when connected to our laptop. Unfortunately, I don't have a wired keyboard to try and I'm loathe to buy one just to see if that's the problem. Everyone else I know, including my neighbour, have laptops. Apart from the impending expiry of XP support the main reason for spending £850 on a new PC was for Studio so I'm feeling very frustrated. If we can't solve this I suppose I can use S15 which was an unexpected bonus with Movie Box but I do prefer S12. P.S. I seem to have lost Spell checker on the Forum.

1) Insert S12 Program Disk first. We're assuming you have S12 Upgrade Disk? Not an Upgrade Download or Full Version Disk.
2) Wait for S12 Disk to be Automatically Ejected.
3) Insert S10 Program Disk 1, while holding-down Shift Key. Keep it pressed down. Don't release it until you get the next prompt. It looks like you're releasing it too quickly.
4) S10 Disk will be automatically ejected.
5) Insert S12 Program Disk. Only Select; Install S12 Program

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12
I'm afraid that didn't work either. It all worked exactly the same. I waited at least 2 minutes after the Replace disk dialogue box appeared (and long after the drive stopped spinning) but S12 was not automatically ejected. I clicked on OK in the dialogue box but it made no difference. I then finally ejected it manually and held Shift whilst inserting S10 and waited for more than another 2 minutes (with shift depressed) but only the usual start box appeared. Again, clicking OK on the previous dialogue box made no difference. Do you think it would make any difference if I tried to install under XP mode if I can work out how to do that? I have S12 Upgrafe DVD.

IMO, No, since you had the same problem with your XP PC.
W7 should automatically Install, using & automatically Applying recommended Settings for Programs Developed for Windows OS Versions prior to W7. Eg; XP, anyway.
I've always purchased Studio Full Versions. Not Upgrades.
I need to watch Ramon's excellent Video Tutorial, to refresh my memory.& Post-back. I need to see at which points the Installation Prompts Pop-Ups occur & what they say. .
If my memory serves me correctly (Which it probably doesn't), I thought there was an alternative to Installing an Upgrade, other than the Shift Key method.
There's also possibly another method you could try, using the Shift Key, by Exploring S12 Installation Disk & Running the Setup/Welcome EXE File from there. Or Copying the Disk Contents to a New Folder on your PC's Desktop (Monitor) & Running the Setup/Welcome EXE File from there. but I need to check that first.
I need to find time to do the above & will Post-back by the end of the Weekend.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12
By any chance, do you have Studio 11 Software?
If I am not mistaken, I think you may need the Studio 10 Vista Installer to upgrade. jjn should have the download available but his internet speed is slow so you may need plenty of time for it to download. (Studio 10 Vista Installer is identical as the Studio 10 disc you have, but you won't need your Studio 10 disc...you only need the activation code you already have).
ask jjn for his website so you can download the Studio 10 Vista Installer.

The S10 full versions are HERE (I'd be interested in the download times people get. the site is hosted by 1&1)

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12
1. I only have S10+ Titanium Edition, I don't have S11. 2. I've gone to the download site and that looks very interesting. I presume I can download the S10 programme from there and then use my S12 Upgrade disk. Can you advise on the following:- a. there are three S10 options for W7, under Full Versions. Which one would be best, or doesn't it matter? b. From what you say I use my existing S10 registration details when doing the download? c. After I've then upgraded it to S12 should I remove S10?
I'll let you know how long the download takes when I do it.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12
Like jjn, I do not really want to make matters worse. However ....... You could try copying the Pixie folder on the old computer to the same location on the new computer. You could also copy the Content in the Public/ Pinnacle folder. This would save having to transfer previous content. I have the Titanium version of S10 which was S10.6. On that disc also the version for installing to Vista (W7). If you do need to install S10 on W7 therefore, you need to open the disc to view files. There you will see the folder 'Studio Vista Installer' and inside that folder is the 'Welcome.exe' which needs to be used to install on W7. That should be enough to let you install S12 but if you wanted to use S10 then, after the install, the StudioPatch10_8.exe also needs to be installed. Both Studio_Plus_Vista_Installer.exe (1.4GB) and StudioPatch10_8.exe (124MB) are no longer available as downloads. Regarding your keyboard and mouse, did these come with the computer or are they old ones. Either way, check for W7 drivers which came with them or visit the manufacturers website. Microsoft may only have installed a generic driver. ADDED I see Jeff has offered Studio_Plus_Vista_Installer.exe download, however, check on your S10 disc first.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12
Thanks for your input David; everything is welcomed. My S10 version is 10.5.1. This is obviously an earlier version than yours and I've never seen any reference to Vista(W7). I accidentally started to download S10 the other day when I experienced this current problem again (it also happened on my previous PC) and it just kept saying it was incompatible with W7 with no reference to Vista. I'm loathe to transfer any Studio elements from my previous PC as this all started with audio problems in the timeline there and I wouldn't want to risk transferring that problem to here. I don't particularly want S10 here it's just that S12 is an upgrade DVD so I need to get the S10 disk verified to install it. Regarding the keyboard and mouse, they're actually fairly new Microsoft items so I would have thought the drivers should be OK.

I think that you only need to download the Studio 10.6 TE, since that is the one you have available. I am not quite sure if the other downloads may work with your TE activation key.

Yes Mike, the Vista Installer was included with version S10.6. For earlier versions you need to download it.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12
Upgrading from an earlier Installed Studio "Full" Version & then Uninstalling the "Full" Version, frequently broke the Upgrade.
Therefore, if you Install S10, you need to keep it Installed.
Since S12 is several years-old, the Program Disk might have blemishes &/or superficial scratches that can be removed, which might be preventing S12 PIXIE Folder from being Copied to S12 Temporary Installation Folder.
The PIXIE Folder is the First Folder to be Copied. It looks for a previous Installed Version & Ejects the Disk when it can't find it, producing the Previous Version Prompt Pop-Ups as per Ramon's Video Tutorial..
You need to confirm whether or not you're getting the first Prompt Pop-Up, to rule-out a corrupt S12 Program Disk (as above).
If you are getting the first Prompt Pop-Up, then it could be a Keyboard problem.
Try re-connecting the Keyboard & Mouse to the Wireless Receiver,
BTW - I also have a Wireless Keyboard & Laser Mouse.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12
Before I received your latest post I dowloaded S10+ TE from the previously provided Download site (I hadn't twigged TE=Titanium Edition). I was asked how long it took and it was 1 1/4 hours but I have a slow internet connection. I then tried installing S10 but have run into some more problems:- - I selected Custom Install but there was no opportunity to reject Instant DVD etc in the list available, although it showed in the subsequent list to be installed.
- I thought I'd deleted all of the Studio files from the previous aborted installation attempt so I was surprised to see my activation code already shown on the appropriate page
- I received a warning about the driver to be installed but couldn't see any way to avoid it so carried on
- Also later received a warning that the programme had issues but again felt I had to continue
- Finally had problems with installing the SQL server (see below) and couldn't continue any further.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12
To add to my post above, S10 is now showing in my Programmes but when I tried to run it I got the following message about a problem with the Fonts, so although quite a bit of the programme may have been installed all is obviously not well. Should I try to uninstall it and try again or, as it seems to have recognised my activation code, should I try to install S12 now?

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12
1) Well - I have already Posted; Don't Install InstantDVD Recorder & MediaManager a couple of times, Mike.
2) Since you won't be using S10 & it looks like it might have Installed/partially apart from MSSQL Server & some Fonts, try Installing S12.
The MSSQL Server is in fact PSMSSQL Server. PS (Pinnacle Systems).
3) If your DVD Drive Locks again, you need to go through the previous process of checking for InstantDVD Recorder & Uninstall it if it's Installed..
FYI - InstantDVD Recorder loads into System Memory each time you start your PC independently of Studio Program.
And - Studio Upgrades can share files from the previous Full Version. (Economical Programming?). So, if S12 does Install, I hope it's fully functional.

As I recall, Media Manager gave problems and nobody used it anyway so forget that. I don't think you have anything to lose by trying S12 now.

I forgot to mention that Mike's PC Guru should have Downloaded & Run 3 times, Pinnacle's S10 REGDELETE Registry Cleaner, after Uninstalling it.
Those left-over Registry entries are the reason why S10, Serial Number appears when Mike Reinstalled S10. Ccleaner would do a better job.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12
I definitely remembered your previous valuable advice but I couldn't see how to avoid installing Instant DVD Recorder and Media Manager. I chose Custom Install and it then showed a list of items that would be downloaded with the option to deselect any I didn't want. The LHS showed the main headings and clicking on them showed their sub folders on the RHS. Nowhere did I see IDVDR or Media Manager or I would have deselected them. However, when I then went to the next dialogue box they were then listed as items that would be installed, but there was no way to edit that list. I kept going backwards and forwards but I couldn't see them anywhere on the edit list so couldn't find any way of preventing them from being installed. I'll try to install S12 now but if that's succesful can you confirm how to then uninstall IDVDR and Media Manager again please (assuming they were installed). And my neighbour doesn't know about Pinnacle's S10 REGDELETE Registry Cleaner. I think I've just found it on the previous Download Page. Is that the correct one, and can I save it to my new PC now without it having any effect on my existing installation?

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12
Yes Peter, but isn't that very same serial number that S12 needs to see? I only have the full versions, not upgrades, so don't have this problem. However, I have just installed a previously constructed baseline OS disc image that has not seen any Pinnacle. On that I installed S15 and all content from S10 and S14. S17.1 was then installed. The only thing I encountered (and expected) was that 1 S10 disc 'may not have installed correctly'. I let Windows change it to compatability mode although it could have been done manually if needed by right clicking on the executable file and selecting compatability. But that is just my way of doing it. I don't know what to suggest to Mike, especially as he does not seem to have aquired much knowledge about Windows or computers.
